Chinas Type 076 Is Shaping Up To Be A Monster Amphibious Warship

>The first example of a new class of Chinese warship with a large open flight deck, commonly referred to as the Type 076, is steadily taking shape. Generally described as an amphibious assault ship, there have long been reports that the vessel could feature catapults and arresting gear to support an air wing that includes uncrewed combat air vehicles (UCAV) and other fixed-wing drones.
>Official details about the Type 076, which the U.S. military now also refers to as the Yulan class, remain limited. The first evidence that the PLAN was interested in such a ship emerged in 2020. The Type 076 moniker reflects reports that the design may be derived, at least in part, from existing the Type 075.
>From what we can see now of the Type 076, which looks to have been under construction since around October 2023, it is a substantially larger vessel in all regards. A review of satellite imagery from Planet Labs indicates that it is roughly 864 feet long and 141 feet wide (263 and nearly 43 meters, respectively). By comparison, again based on satellite imagery, the Type 075 is 784 feet long and 105 feet wide (almost 239 and 32 meters), while the Fujian is 1,036 feet in length and 275 feet in width (close to 316 and almost 84 meters).
>As another comparison, the Type 076 is similar in length to the U.S. Navy's aviation-focused amphibious assault ship USS America, but is significantly wider. The America is 855 feet (260.7 meters) long and is 106 feet (32.3 meters) at its widest, according to the Navy.
They're starting to build their own class of ships now:

Show me any other LHD that has EMALS catapults like the Type 076. The chinks must have copied this design from somewhere right?

expeditionary strike groups for the US have been doing this for a while. it's like the little brother to carrier strike groups.

Only VTOL aircraft can take off from them which means no E-2 Hawkeye's. The chink Type 076 will have EMALS catapults so they can launch fixed wing aircraft, UCAV and AWACS, thus making It a true "light carrier" and be able to perform carrier ops alongside with It's larger brother the Type 003.

Why the frick would you ever want to operate an E-2 off of an LHD?

because the other option is to have a full blown CBG do it. what moronic question is that?

                Anonymous

yea, that's what they're made for, the US doesn't need gimped solutions to deploy AWACS.
the US navy has 11 supercarriers, china has 1 which is not even active yet and the liaoning that can only do STOBAR and has no AWACS capability.
american LHDs are primarily made to support marine operations, and launch marine F35Bs, it's not their job to do AWACS because they have better purpose made assets for that.

Are US Assault Ships even meant to operate independently of CBGs?

              Anonymous

If you need AWACS and none of the ELEVEN CSG's can assist, you've got bigger problems. I don't think the idea of a 'light carrier' is worth it. At that point just make the bigger carrier, there's no point in not making a bigger one if you can man it and the reactor. The amphibious groups can provide plenty of support and power to your landing groups, while the CSG serves as the anchor of a wider air-superiority operation.

If some military analysts come up with a different assessment, I'm sure we'll see the America-class carriers get their decks ripped up and a catapult installed in a couple years... Or god forbid they'll turn Osprey's into AWACS and actually make the EV-22...

            >muh PPP
China has a closed capital account and the exchange rate is fixed, meaning had the RMB been freely traded to the dollar then China's PPP would have collapsed by 50% easily. On top of the denominator in calculating PPP is inflation. China manipulates their inflation number just by lying outright about their inflation, plus they manipulate their prices through things like slave labor and subsidies. PPP shouldn't be completely overlooked but you can't just take it as gospel

              Anonymous

PPP compares prices of baskets of goods, they can be reevaluated at any exchange rate. Trust me, you don't want to start comparing things like basic industrial goods (steel, cement, electricity consumption, cars), or US will look like a dwarf.

And you should know that China is not a free market. Those numbers are decided by Xi Jinping and a very small and closed group of people. If Pooh demands steel and coal to go up, they go up, which leads to overcapacity and numerous zombie businesses, which the CCP later has to spend billions on to reduce overcapacity, force debt to be repaid and lay off workers. China is not some utopia or rationally lead country, it's a mess. Things could have been better if CCP had focused on increasing demand, but for some reason they think that if the common people had their lives improved they'd overthrow their government

                >If Pooh demands steel and coal to go up, they go up, which leads to overcapacity and numerous zombie businesses,

There is no such thing as overcapacity when producing physical goods. Increased production and falling prices of steel and coal will lead to an industrial boom. American industry simply isnt competitive on the international market any more so that's why americans whine about chink "overcapacity". In a not too distant future american cars will only be sold inside America.

The rest of the world isn't going to just bend over and just let Pooh bear dump subsidized wares on their market, not even Brazil. Oversupply and no orders makes your company worthless. Where is this industrial boom? Right in the housing market that has completely crashed and caused a financial crisis. Yellen told the chinks outright that they're not going to export themselves to full employment and you should start listening. When you are printing USD you are reducing the value of USD which means that you are in practice taking money from everyone who has USD.
