Cheap helmets

What are my fellow poorfags doing for helmets? Looking for a cheap ballistic helmet for shits and giggles. Don't really care to spend upwards of 1k for one.

I've run across a few of pic related but they're not military surplus, they appear to be made by a company called United Shield for police use. Their model number is PST SC 650 but the look like a regular PASGT and have the same specs. I found one that would be under $200 brand new.

Is the PASGT style helmet a good deal or is there something else in the surplus arena for cheap that I'm unaware of?

I found the perfect helmet for you. This one is under $150 and is designed with your use case specifically in mind.

Opticsplanet has some cheap ballistic helmets. Don't buy the ones from random helmet websites cuz they're usually fake and gay

Haven't they gone out of business because they couldn't fulfill 95% of orders?

Cheapest you can do is probably a surplus nato kevlar helmet. In the 90's everyone made copies of the pasgt and they are all functionally the same thing. The retention system in the pasgt sucks so you'll want to either swap in one meant for an ACH or try to find a deal on one of those instead.

this, you can find them for like under 200. theres also surp police ones

Yeah and the police ones are more likely to have a more modern retention and pad system. They stuck with the cut longer than the military did.

Here you go Anon. Buy an ACH strap https://www.amazon.com/GOVERNMENT-CONTRACTOR-Improved-Retention-System/dp/B07CKWGBYY

And pads and you a g2g.

The one I was looking at was a new old stock police helmet with a mfg. date of 2018 for around $180.

Can you use comms with the PASGT style of helmet or are you pretty much bound to earplugs over something like razor slims?

I don't think it has enough space on the ears, or for a band over the head. though I'm not sure the surplus helmet I have is pagst

You cant fit something like commtacs under them but there are other things you can do like earpieces or the old school bowman headsets.

For just a bit more than 200 bucks you can get chinesium helmets that have been tested to work and are way fresher in terms of material versus some helmet made in 1986.

kevlar helmets dont really go bad like soft kevlar armor does unless the weave is exposed and left to UV light or something like that. If the paint is intact and its not damaged it will work as good as when it was new.

              >If the paint is intact
I'll probably repaint my sep2s with spray on truckbed liner. The shells are stripped, so pads, straps, racoon tails, chain mail neck protection and Buick hood ornaments really add to the cost. I may just mount a dummy female BNC connector for a faux antenna/lightning rod.

I looked at the Longfri ones from Botach for a while but I have a big head and don't think it'll fit based on the measurements on their site.

Just buy an ACH if you can find one. PASGTs suck, but if you really like the cut, buy a USMC Light Weight Helmet (LWH), they externally look like PASGTs, but don't use the old school suspension.

What about ear pro? I have electronic muffs that I'd want to use.

Really annoying how everything that's high cut is super expensive or chinesium.

Halfway tempted to buy the cheapest low cut I can find and DIY it into a high cut for ear pro.

That's what I was thinking. But I don't know if the Large size they're showing in stock is big enough for my big ass 24.5 inch head.

Last I checked the SG SEPT2 sizes are backwards. Buying smaller used to mean getting bigger helmets, while buying larger got tinier. I bought a Medium and the fuckers gave me a goddamn stripped XL 3 Viti (the SEPT2's somewhat superior successor) instead. Working theory is that the SG warehouse staff are illiterate and just randomly mark shit, but at these prices you can buy one or two of each and still keep under budget.

Wrap head in bubble wrap and duct tape.

No helmet stops rifle rounds, not even the ones with plates, and odds of being shot with a pistol round are almost zilch, so only need one to keep your noodle from being bumped.

they can stop frag and ricochets

        Anonymous

True, but both are rare as well, as most head injuries are neither, but rock/brick fragments from artillery and bombs or simple falling or hitting head on something. Simple cheap helmets stop those.

There are numerous examples of people surviving rifle rounds to the cranium because of their helmet. This guy is amusingly named Steve McQueen and he survived a 7.62x54r to the back of the head in Afghanistan.
OP also said he only wants it for giggles so it doesn't matter really.

10 years ago, you could get used PASGT pots for like 30-50 bucks on Ebay. Also old British Mk5 helmets, that are actually ballistic Nylon, not Kevlar.

Those times obviously long gone, and a more modern, ex-police gear is for certainly a better deal than 30-40yo military surplus that's prolly been beaten and thrown around by military conscripts.
Also your pic has an obvious 4-point chinstrap system, which is WAY more secure and comfy than the PASGT's default 2-point sling. I would not be surprised if that's actually a proper MICH helmet, with padding system and all.

Pic related is a default, real PASGT, with its leather sweat band and the normal nylon 2 point chin sling.

However that does show how easy it is to upgrade if you happen to have one. Going to pads is as simple as cutting velcro and gluing it in too.

I dont see why not. Thats how it works in all the newer helmets. Its just applied from the factory.

Nta, but it looks grim. I have a woven bamboo Chinese hard hat that looks like an old doughboy helmet I have wanted to do the same to, and it looks like a low effort job even for that. I want closed cell foam with minimal contact for airflow and reduced sweating.

You might be onto something there. The helmet in the OP is a United Shield PST SC 650 and from what I can see on Google it looks like its that company's version of the PASGT. One site says it's lighter and has "wider cut around the ears for use with communications headsets". Looks like it has a good harness too.
