Standard UK political fare. Every Prime Minister is always the 'WORST PM EVER!!!! . . . except for the one that came before him of course'.

                Anonymous

I really don't think that is the case nor do I remember people claiming at the time that Thatcher was the worst PM ever, or that Major was, or even that Blair was. Cameron was doing well until he boxed himself in with an unexpected election result, May failed but for the right reasons which is complicated and Johnson solved the problems by simply lying. Should Sunak go I think its unlikely people will think he was worse than Johnson.

So I don't think there is any truth in this at all.

If you asked me that under normal political circumstances I'd laugh in your face and need a minute to be calm enough to talk intelligibly. We are definitely not in normal, or even vaguely sane, political circumstances at the moment though. Sunak seems to be working hard to get some kind of 'domestic disturbance' going with his new anti-strike legislation (which is the sort of thing that should lead to politicians being hanged from the lamp posts) so who knows? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was back in number 10 before too long.

Of course that would lead to the Tories getting absolutely fricking slaughtered in the next election - even worse than they're going to be already. At the moment they're looking at at least a generation in 'the wilderness' before they have a credible chance of forming a government again; if BoJo came back then it could realistically lead to the actual death of the party.

I just want to go back to when things made sense.

In reality it's the reverse, Johnson's removal was not popular among the people who actually vote, especially up north

                Anonymous

Johnson wasn't removed, his position became untenable because there was nobody left to tell lies on his behalf. This wasn't the press, it wasn't the civil service or the deep state, it was Tory MPs refusing to serve in his cabinet because he was routinely humiliating everyone that worked for him.

His popularity in the red wall is much overstated, nobody wants him back.

                >His popularity in the red wall is much overstated, nobody wants him back.

I'm not so sure. Johnson beat Starmer in a by-election, this is unheard for a party that's been in power for nine years. Regardless, Johnson would lose less seats than Truss or Sunak, bottom line is that the Tory MPs lost their nerve (especially in October last year) and will regret it.

I think people are pissed off at the state of the country, and his casual approach to everything will just piss people off more. Sometimes the joke stops being funny.

Would it not be better to send tanks they have experience of using, know how to fix and have a system in place already for recovery and repair of ones that are broken down? As awesome as it would be to see Challengers slaying vatnik T-80s they would only work with British crews.

    This accurate?
Suggests there isn't a whole lot that can get through the turret, maybe large diameter HEAT through the mantlet (Kornets push 1000mm plus after ERA for eg).
I also wonder If this is actual Armor protection or if it is including the steel bulk of the gun mounting/breech.
AFAIK the steel beasts protection includes anything that will prevent penetration into the fighting compartment, not just armour.

Honestly I hope there is proper research done on the Armored warfare in Ukraine.
Since we saw Russian tanks loaded with 1980s darts, and others with many gun launched ATGM I have been particularly curious about how the actual Armored warfare plays out with the Ukrainian tanks and also with ATGMs.
How well the respective Armor performs, ERA ect.

I never get the whole fanfic of tank armor thickness, even if you have a good idea that X area is 1000mm thick you haven't a clue what kind of material(s) is used and what kind of concept so knowing the thickness is kind of moot?

They do have a clue what materials are used and there are models that estimate it.

They are basically guesstimations the efficiency of the array and slap and RHAe value.
The Steel beasts ones are massively wrong (way too high) like pic related should be 350-430mm vs KE, 700-750mm to declassified RARDE documents for Chieftain Replacement

I have to hand it to the Brits. They really have taken the initiative to send Ukraine the hardware it's been asking for. I understand it's a complicated situation for the Germans and the French, but there's no denying that they've fallen short of their obligations by comparison. The Germans are still dragging their feet to get Ukraine some fricking tanks; denying even Poland from sending Leopard 2's. It's like they expect the Americans to be the first to send tanks all the way from North America so they don't have to deal with the potential political fallout. All the while more soldiers and civilians die.
And then there's the British: training troops, suppling a shit tone of manpads, now we're seeing reports of helicopters and tanks. They're not even in the EU anymore. If we want to end this with a victory then lets just send what is needed.

It's easier for Britain; not only are we further away from Russia then Germany is but we've got got a Natural 'moat' that the Russians can't just walk across. To get to Germany, Russia has to push through Poland; to get to Britain, Russia has to either push through Poland>Germany>BeNeLux or Finland>Sweden>Norway, and even after those there's still the Chanel to cross. So Britain is understandably freer to make material donations.

The idea is probably to nudge momentum incrementally. 14 being many isn't enough to start an international incident, but it might get another 3 or 4 countries to send 8-12 of their own.
It's ramping things up gradually, whereas 'UK sends 80 challengers' might make Lavrov actually deviate from his usual "that stick of ginger has gone too far up my bum, and now I can't reach it and I regret ever trying"

Even 80 Challengers isn't a lot, I don't think it changes anything Russia does beside making denouncements. It just means Britain's army is stripped bare, but it's our own fault for cutting it to a skeleton force.

We really aren't, the FTSE is at a record high. The great thing about a services and finance based economy is that we charge people more in line with inflation but our costs haven't risen as much as in manufacturing based economies because we don't use as much energy.

Can't last, consumer spending is surviving on debt and savings, which were historically high after COVID.
Eventually people won't be able to pay massively elevated prices and then you will see the typical recession.

Students do, if you can afford the overseas fees you aren't going want to hang around this shithole afterwards. We should be glad to get people who can rock up here, spend 60k of foreign cash and leave again. The reality is that there are small numbers of outright fraudulent applications, this isn't to do with universities, its do with the government's liberalisation and insufficient regulation. The "universities" those people apply to are just PO box numbers or a flat over a kebab shop.

It would be a very Tory thing though to crack down on this, end up defunding Cambridge and the scammers just move on to something else.

The reason the Tories like, sometimes, the idea of cutting student visas is that its easier to remove legal immigrants than the illegal immigrants they let in on a nod and a wink. Its also storing up problems because a lot of ethnic minorities thought Brexit meant their village from India or Pakistan would be able to move here once racist EU immigration laws ended. Sunak in particular is expected to deliver.

The bigger issue is that in measurements of averages, our numbers are skewed by the massive wealth inequality where our extravagantly rich are so much richer than most it actually pulls the average up noticeably. We are definitely poorer than such measurements imply, and we're far from the richest nations even then.

Another survived 70 RPG hits. Only 1 Challenger 2 has been destroyed in combat; by another Challenger 2 in a friendly fire incident.

The rpg is literally designed to be used by russian armed forces. They will know the way to utilize it at maximum efficiency to ensure better accuracy to hit challenger weak spot. I am also forgot to mention that even lowly t-72 will be able to pen challenger armor so... 10 of them won't have any impact other than to humiliate the bong and nato at the same time.

            >70 RPG hits
This sounds a little bit implausible for a few reasons
            >Armour that resists one semi-penetration nevertheless becomes damaged and weakened, that tank would look like swiss cheese and likely be as squidgy after 20 hits, let alone 70
            >To be hit 70 times implies there's something operationally wrong with the tank, either it was stuck (not unlikely with its 75 ton weight), the crew couldn't see shit or the tank is big and slow and couldn't get out of the kill zone quickly or at all
            >The Taliban aren't the most well equipped force in the world, did this tank drive up to their armoury or something? It seems doubtful an ambush would have been carrying 70+ rockets and however many launchers needed to fire that many

Ultimately I'm going consider this propaganda, didn't happen and is targeted at people who wouldn't know much about this stuff.

Yup, by an incredibly autistic British officer who was upset by his tank-fus representation in either WoT or Warthunder (I forget which). IIRC a Chinese officer did the same thing with whatever Knockofferov MBT China's using.
