CBRN in Ukraine: new gas grenade & official figures

Ukraine's military has provided summary statistics on Russian use of chemical weapons in the war, along with initial info on a newly observed gas grenade. In brief:

1. Russian use of CWs is systematic, with 626 confirmed cases documented so far.

2. Use is increasing, with 81 confirmed cases in December.

3. Toxicity is increasing. Russians have recently introduced a higher-concentration CN grenade, labeled PГ-Bo (RG-Vo). This apparently stands for "hand grenade - poisonous substance." This item does not appear on Russia's state catalog alongside other grenades.

4. Ukraine's spokesman believes that Russia might be gauging international reaction while introducing progressively stronger CWs. Frog boiling, essentially.

5. Localized use of deadlier CWs is likely. But panic and misinfo are rife, complicating matters. For instance, international media damaged the credibility of CW news coming out of Ukraine by widely reporting that russia's K-51 grenade contains chloropicrin (PS), a chemical agent best known for its use in WW1. It does not.

Shitposting aside, the lean into CN is odd and somewhat dubious. It has greater toxicity than other teargas agents with similar performance. There's no obvious reason I can see for switching over to CN.

is the production easier or something

          Anonymous

Not sure. I've never synthesized it myself, but it looks straightforward enough. Phenacryl groups are useful in ochem, so CN production likely has a bunch of unrelated industrial uses that might make it attractive compared to CS. But there is much more use of CS in riot control worldwide, so there's also a lot more work on efficiently aerosolizing it. CR is nasty and probably the worst of the usual characters to see state-level use in Ukraine so far (during the pre-maidan years). Chemcially, OC is completely unrelated. It's made from chili peppers.

There might also be considerations like shelf life and temperature at which the grenade burns. You can get teargas grenades to burn very hot.

Well, Ukraine needs to respond to this escalation. Ukraine should make artillery shells with VX Nerve Gas. Vatniks don't have the gear to handle that. Hit the whole front line at the same time and watch most of the vatniks die. Take no prisoners.

yeah because a tit for tat war crime escalation with a nuclear power is a fantastic idea anon

It is not a war crime, if the other side did it first. Russia has effectively nullified all of the Geneva conventions. Russians never honor agreements.
Maybe Ukraine should kill all of the Russians in Moscow and Petersburg too, as a first strike too.
Nuclear is not the only way to do mutually assured destruction.

Even if it's proved/shown Russia is using CW it's not as if the West is going to provide Ukraine with equivalent. Basically presents the West with the choice of intervening (West/Ukraine=win, but at some cost) or not (Ukraine losses or counters with the same). 2 years ago I think it would have been given NATO would push Russia's shit in using WMD but now dunno, politically maybe it would be good for Biden, Schulz, Macron, Sunak, Trudeau to escalate all unpopular, maybe this is how the war actually ends..

Seems mad for the Russians to dare a Black person given how easily NATO could push Russia out of Ukraine...

There's not much to be done in response that isn't essentially just an inferentially obvious escalation from where we are now. The problem with this sort of probing at the fringes of what will be tolerated is that the logic of hybrid frickery was a lot stabler when russia was less desperate.

Since the invasion, the russians have come a c**t's hair shy from pulling the trigger on a radiological provocation at ZNPP. And they *did* pull the trigger on an ecocidal attack in the immediate vicinity of ZNPP. All while repeatedly claiming that they are being subjected to biological warfare, normalizing "everyone does it, so we must defend ourselves by doing it too" to heights unseen. And while terminating the last major nuclear arms control agreements.

For a frame of reference, the dnieper cascade holds a greater total volume of water than the three gorges. Blowing the kakhovka dam was the largest environmental crime & disaster in europe since chernobyl. Only a few other events, like romania's cyanide disaster, are even in the same league.
