Can you guys recommend me some good military sci-fi?

Can you guys recommend me some good military sci-fi? I figure a bunch of guys who own guns and like them would like reading books about people using guns to shoot "aliens" in the face.

I like this one so far, I've read a lot of Battletech, I've read all of the Honor Harrington, and most of the Lost Fleet.

I like spess battles, mechs and other things.

Dune and starship troopers are pretty much the Lord of the Rings of the sci-fi genre. You don't have to like them, but reading them is something that is HIGHLY recommended in order to get a better understanding of what the genre is capable of as entry level books.

Author was one of the most prolific Battletech writers until some troony posing as a chick got Catalyst to fire him for wrongthink. Said troony then decided it wasn't a chick anymore and can't understand why the community blames it for Blaine's firing.
From what I understand, the book series is about ayys coming up from the depths of the ocean or something.

Oddly enough it's made by a person who works at CGL, and then what the other guy said.

The "Old Man's War" series is great, I highly recommend it. The "Enders Game" series is also great, and of course "Starship Troopers"

Not exactly scifi, but "Monster Hunter International" is great, a bit boomerish, but still a fun read/listen

David Drake's Hammer's Slammers series. There's 3 volumes of compilations. I highly recommend it as a mil sci-fi written by an actual tanker.

Hammer's Slammers makes me unironically hard, absolutely kino. Powerguns and Hovertanks are fricking awesome and I wish they adapted some of the stories into movies or games or something, they also make great side by side reading for other Vietnam era books and movies (like Micheal Herr's Dispatches or Full Metal Jacket).

Personally I recommend the March Upcountry series by John Ringo, the synopsis is the third and least liked Prince of a Star-Nation gets stranded on a shitty planet and has to march across the planet to a spaceport crossing all sorts of Barbarians and Feudal nations. The books are very pulpy but pretty cool.
I also recommend Ranks of Bronze by David Weber, that one is about a Roman Legion that gets sold as slaves to Aliens and used as deniable assets by the first aliens against other primitive aliens, pretty kino for Romans slaughtering Xenos and the MC banging a Lizard-Woman

They actually adapted Hammer's Slammers into the Mongoose 1e Traveller tabletop RPG. There's official licensed sourcebooks and everything.

The Lost by Peter Nealan: Recon Marines on training mission in Norway get transported to essentially a Diablo world where Hell won.
Horus Heresy: Warhammer space marine split series.
Guants Ghost: Less autism Warhammer series about an Imperial Guard regiment
Destroyermen by Taylor Anderson: WWI Era Destroyer at start of WWII gets transported to alternate earth where dinasours didn't get nuked by an asteroid. (Completed)
Artillerymen by Taylor Anderson: Same alternate earth from perspective of US Army unit transported while enroute to land at Veracruz during Mexican-American war.
Rise of the Republic series by James Rosone: Human venture into space for colonies and find aliens.
Undying Mercenaries by B.V. Larson: Earth gets rolled into a Galactic Empire, paperwork to the max, each civilization must have something of value or trade that isn't already spoken for. With most species being too "civilized" compared to Humans, we provide Armies. With tech from the Empire, we can "record" people and then "reprint" them after their are confirmed dead.
Holy War series by Rick Partlow: can't remember much from this one. Lots of space combat.

What's a good 40k book to read for someone new to the franchise?

Warhammer 40k had a huge selection of novels, most of them decently well written.

Some of the Halo books are pretty good, like The Fall of Reach.

Gaunts ghost and Ciaphus Cain series are well loved.

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex
Usually more police than military but there's a good amount of episodes involving serious military hardware, especially in season 2

Oh and don't watch the new shitty netflix series but Arise is okay

The Empire's Corps series. which is a unashamedly pro-USMC sci fi Fall of Rome.
StarFist series. A late 80's early 90's space marine wank.
Phule's Company series a comedy military sci fi that I highly recommend.
The Rika series a military cyborg waifu who goes from cannon fodder to leading a mercenary company in a brutal universe.

The obvious ones - Starship Troopers, Dune, Foundation. Most of the rest of Heinlein is worth reading too, just for fun even the ones where he's more interested in climbing up on a soapbox. Once you've done that give the Lost Fleet series a look (low ranking space navy officer wakes up after a century in stasis to find that the federation he was a part of has been in war for a hundred years, that his inconsequential ass has been turned into a national hero, his name/propaganda stories have been used to justify the sort of war crimes that make him feel queasy, and the actual effects that generations of non-stop war would have have degraded the quality of the fleet/military to the point where he's amazed it can still function. Oh, and he is now the most senior officer in a fleet trapped a long way behind enemy lines and everyone expects the glorious hero to know how to get them home, where they also expect him to overthrow what's left of the democratic government and save everyone as military dictator for life).

Oh, and it's a big change of pace from the other suggestions ITT, but try the 'Three Body Problem' too.
