Superpowers come and go. The best way to maintain your superpower status, is to treat every threat seriously.
And if there is one threat on this planet to be taken seriously, it's China.

Couldn’t we just execute our own CEOs, shareholders, and legislators after a show trial to pretty much nullify any Chinese threat? Maybe run Henry Kissinger over with an asphalt roller?
I guess add in Billiam Clinton and the Israelis for giving the chinks ballistic missile technology in the mid-90s?
All the above are why the Chinese have turned into a threat.

That and the Soviets were being heavily supplied by Lend-Lease. Stalin admitted that they'd have lost if the US hadn't given them so much stuff.
In short, I'm pretty sure this is all FDR's fault. If he had lost in 1932, 1936, or even 1940 (or had stepped down in 1940 as he was supposed to instead of playing fricking dictator by staying in office until he died), we wouldn't have had to worry about the Russians ever again. We were never friends with the reds, FDR was friends with them because he was a commie israelite.

FDR was stuck with two bad choices to begin with - either he let the Nazis win and try to practice their eugenics, or he let the Soviets win and end up here. Intentionally killing anyone who isn't Aryan looked worse, so he took option 2.
The real problem was Wilson. Get rid of him, and FDR wouldn't have HAD to decide between a pain in the backside for generations and ideologically-motivated eugenics.

I can agree with that at least, the Good Roosevelt, Teddy, should have won. Or least least Taft since he would have won anyway had Teddy not split the vote, his politics were literally the exact same except he was quiet about it and just did his job, the sole reason Teddy jumped in is because he didn't think Taft would win. Personally I would prefer Taft more as he would maintain the integrity of American term limits and probably could have just consulted Roosevelt, perhaps even sent him as the US ambassador to the postwar conference since he wouldn't be in failing health by 1918 due to being shot in 1912. As epic as his speech was, the world would have been better off if he'd just been patient for once. Also I'm almost certain Teddy's would-be assassin was actually mistaken regarding his schizo remarks about stopping the third termer given that FDR fulfilled this sort of prophecy much later.
Anyways, picrel really would have been the best US President in history if only the vote hadn't been split. This absolute unit of trust-busting could have saved the world.
As a bonus, he really didn't want to be president but was sort of railroaded that way due to becoming VP, his main goal and dream was to become a Supreme Court Justice but he wasn't able to do it until much later when he was appointed to Chief Justice in 1925. The man didn't care for tyranny, he was content to live a quiet life and interpret the law faithfully.

            >Stalin admitted that they'd have lost if the US hadn't given them so much stuff.
It's funny how according to some studies union had more than enough resources to win on their own from the get go, if only they weren't moronic communists. Their population was oppressed and impoverished to the extend where they initially seen invading nazis as a better choice than bolsheviks. Their soldiers instead of receiving actual training were lied into the face of how glorious their army was and how scared shitless everyone of them, they got their ass kicked by finns so much, that they just couldn't admit that shit to the publoc, so they decided to straight up lie and say everything was perfect, meaning there's no reasons for army reforms (there were). Their officers were purged to the ridiculous extend based purely on loyalty, meaning that they got themselves negative selection for an entire corps. Their industry, instead of building one tank properly, saving resources and making it a peer to enemy tank, decided to build five tanks of the shittiest quality so that none of them would survive even the first battle. And Stalin himself intervened in the general planning with his moronic decisions so often that it would be appropriate to say "they won despite him, not because of him".
I genuinely believe that war would be going much better for ruskies if whites won. Hell, war probably wouldn't get to the russkies that way because krauts would break their teeth onto poles without Molotov-Ribentrop pact.

For as much power and influence that the US truly wields it is insanely humble compared to all of these crackpot wannabe dictator regimes. Even the most diehard jingoistic red white and blue pissing American will readily talk about various issues and problems within the country, hell when the Gulf War was prepared there were a shitton of purple hearts made in advance because everyone was expecting it to be Vietnam innasand. Sure you’ll have some fat fricks screeching about something, but as a whole the US is anything but arrogant even if it has a damn good reason to be. There’s a reason why you never see massive military parades here or having our ICBM’s pimped out on the streets like a crack prostitute, and its because we don’t need to convince the world we could wipe them off the map if we really wanted. Even when America was the sole nuclear power on Earth and had global industry by the balls it didn’t try to go full imperialism or anything despite what commie wienersuckers whine about.

Better question is: Why would they try to do it? Take some more land to stroke their ego, while at the same time unleashing a massive war that sees them sanctioned and blockaded out the ass. Where losing the battle means the PRC is doomed.
Where even in the best-case scenario (Chinese take and hold the islands, break a blockade) they're now a pariah.

You know how vatniks all larp for a greater Russia or whatever and see Ukraine as some sort of existential crisis that could make or break the nation if they don’t incorporate it into the borders? Multiply that by 100 and you get the PRC’s attitude towards Taiwan. Xi is doing the same exact things that monke did and China is barely holding on internally, all this shit with Taiwan is just a distraction.

My favorite was when one enterprising officer made a special promotion week where if you let him frick your wife you got a discount on your next promotion. There were more then willing anticipants

PLA generals buy mansions in the most expensive areas in the biggest Tier 1 cities while their kids drive around in Ferraris. Hint: they cant afford any of that with their official salary.

This is only scratching the surface. Of course defense contractors will now paint CHINA NUMBA WAN whenever they can for obvious reason but in real capabilities changs are as shit as vatniks minimum, likely even worse judging by their miserable track record in real wars. Face obsessed cultures are absolute cancer.

Don’t forget all those party billionaires and high ranked logistics officers who spilled the beans on how comically fricked up procurement for everything is so they get some more cash, one of whom pretty much had a whole prostitution ring with all of the women under his command going on.

And it all stems from the same fundamental issue dictatorships have. They all put out the same message: "everything you plebs have is due to the tireless effort of [insert_big_monke_name]". However, the plebs will then ask: "but what about those guys? They aren't ruled by [insert_big_monke_name], yet they seem to be doing quite well. In fact, they seem to be doing better than us..."

A lot of Chinese shills seem to think that being underestimated means you win. A lot of the time, being underestimated ends with someone saying in between gasps of air, "Whoa... killing him... was a lot... harder... than I was... expecting it to be." But then they catch their breath, wander off, and leave your corpse where it lies.
Case in point, the US was not expecting the Battle of Iwo Jima to be as fierce, as long, or as bloody as it ended up being. But after 36 days, the US held the island... and 98.82% of the Japanese garrison were dead.

Even the United States would be unable to invade and hold Taiwan without glassing >60% of the urban infrastructure. If the Chinese frick up their hearts and minds campaign by torturing and disappearing people, which they absolutely will, the island will roll with internal conflict. China may take Taiwan but the cost would extraordinary. And this is not to mention that Taiwan could strike critical infrastructure as revenge and the Chinese are unlikely to mitigate such a strike. Ports, highways, dams. Maybe even city centers. It would make Russia’s embarrassment with Ukraine look minor. Throwing away their opportunity for world superpower for a fricking rock.

        can they do it?

How is China supposed to invade Taiwan when Taiwan is like 60% mountain
Your tanks will not get through all that shit
And what isn't mountains is all urban hell sprawl

China has raw numbers and logistics on their side. USA has a benefit of Russia being incompetent so the Atlantic only needs a piecemeal force with a bit of NATO allies actually pulling their weight.

I think a defense of Taiwan would require outspending China 3 or 5 to 1, just for a prolonged stalemate. I think in a hypothetical, closed system scenario of just the two powers it would ultimately be a pyrrhic victory in China's favor.

But that ignores the global response, allies in SEA, etc. USA could if necessary massively ramp up oil production and eat the cost. Hell we could transition back to rare earths refining and build all our own electronics in a long enough war.
So long as nobody pushes the nuke button a Taiwan invasion would be stalemated and would socially and politically destroy the CCP while assfricking the Chinese economically.

Given Taiwan's wanting to seriously increase their defense, Japan is dusting off the ol brass, Australia just wants an excuse to frick anyone, and a dozen other serious players able to throw some economic, political, and military weight,
        A Chinese invasion is suicide.

        >China has raw numbers and logistics on their side.
How are they going to get 500,000 Chinese soldiers across 100 miles (157km) of water?
They need to get their tanks, soldiers, ammo, fuel, artillery, artillery ammo, food, medical supplies and logistical trucks across the Taiwan strait without getting raped by the the US Navy, Australian Navy, Japanese Navy, Taiwanese defenses, Taiwanese navy, and South Korean navy?
Oh, don't forget the US Air Force which will definitely do a lot of raping.

          Anonymous

They're going to get 500k soldiers across 100 miles of water a hell of a lot easier than the USA will be ferrying arms, people and supplies across the entire Pacific.

China has an inherent logistics advantage and you have to be plum frickin moronic to not understand that. They have 100+ mile capable missiles, their own GPS network, their own spysats. The government of China can straight up force as many manufacturers as possible to assist in or retool for arms manufacture, and they have the resources and manpower to burn through any defense. They have the advantage in attacking Taiwan in the same way the USA has an advantage in defending the west coast.

China is low-grade military but push comes to shove, they -could- burn out the US' ability to supply defense. 100 miles versus 6,000. They make something like 80% of the world's steel. They have a contract monopoly on an overwhelming majority of rare earth metals production. They can just conscript 10 million dudes and ten million more and ten million more after that, while having tens of millions employed in war production. China has stockpiled something like 3.5 years worth of drystore food.

So what did I say in the rest of the post? Realistically an invasion of Taiwan is suicide for the CCP.
In a hypothetical "Just china versus the US MIC" we'd get economically crushed from the stalemate.
Location matters. 100 miles versus 6,000.

Crossing a 100-mile wide strait, which in the event of war would be mined all to hell, within range of anti-shipping missiles in its entirety, and below contested airspace, depositing an entire army onto sand beaches under fire, and then landing the thousands of tons of supply per day needed to sustain it without the use of port facilities or the protection of a natural harbor.
            vs.
The United States' existing logistical infrastructure.

The world didn't just magically decide to get along post '91. It was because the US was willing to engage in a global struggle against totalitarian ideology and stare down autocrats around the world.

            Anonymous

Wrong. The US used elite capture in order to falsify global consensus towards a one world government. The Swedish constitution guarantees a referendum on military alliances, but this was ignored and they're just gonna join NATO because frick you this isn't a democracy anymore.

Your mistake is viewing that neoliberal economic consensus through a /misc/ shitpost lens. Post '91, the economic, military, cultural, and political power of democracy severely outweighed totalitarianism and autocracy for the first time in human history. The benefits that neoliberal economic consensus has given to the world exists because, like I said above, USA #1

because /misc/ said so? what's the better alternative? should we do it like Russia where you go to jail or fall out of a window for shitposting about Putin? Or should we be like China with our own great big firewall and word filters?

                Anonymous

No, not "because /misc/ said so". Because elected officials don't run the country anymore. Even this week, Biden was on 60 minutes saying the US will defend Taiwan, then a few hours later the State Department "clarified" that no it won't. And you had the same thing with Trump who didn't want any troops in Syria. The State Department didn't care. So it isn't even a left-right thing. No matter who gets elected, the actual government just chugs along as normal. That's your "neoliberal consensus", and it is completely artificial.

Russians proved their moronation by completely mismanaging their early conquest and then Ukraine was given actual Western tier toys like HIMARS and anti-radar missiles that one sidedly turned the war because Russia couldn't respond.
China wouldn't get either of those. It can't even feed it's own populace or fuel it's economy. The whole reason belts and road is done is to try and give them some kind of access to Africa and Asian resources without reliance on the ocean. The problem is you are expecting the nogs in Africa and nations who aren't really happy with the projects to maintain them while China rots inside out and starts engaging in Tang Dynasty tactics to sustain itself, which it already is economically. Russia's arms industry can't come close to supplying China with the arms it'd need to stop the US and the US, even without NATO, knows how to ruin China's entire infrastructure without much effort as it's been brainstorming it for longer than China has had working automobiles.

Lolno x2. High-ranking party officials are untouchable. The CCP is the ultimate real-life example of "rules for thee, but not for me". You couldn't just arrest a province's chief secretary for some random bullshit, since it would send a signal that the bigwigs no longer benefit from the protection afforded by their position. Nobody in the party wants that, hence "corruption" (a.k.a. falling out of favor) being the only thing they can be brought down with. Which is why people who refuse corruption are not permitted to climb beyond certain positions. They are untrustworthy.

You do realize Transparency International does their own research, right? Do you honestly think Russia gets its rank 136 placement because Russia flat out comes and admits they're a corrupt shithole?

It's literally called the Corruption PERCEPTIONS Index anon, a lot of the research are essentially questionnaires to various NGOs, businessmen and other "experts" asking them how much corruption they think is going on. That's pretty easy to skew. So if a country has a petty corruption problem going on, but that corruption doesn't go up high into the ministries, it can still frick up the country's score since it's those experiences of lower-level corruption that will influence the data gathered. On the other hand, a country that reins in petty corruption in prominent, front-facing agencies but allows grand larceny to occur behind the scenes might get a pretty good score otherwise.
China, being an authoritarian state, is the latter, and the tight media controls means that barely any of it sees the light of day, even to experts who make a living monitoring corruption. That's why some argue that the CPI just reinforces stereotypes and cliches that aren't helpful in measuring actual corruption going on:

      >The M5A1 tanks employed by the ROC forces on Kinmen proved to be effective in countering the human wave attacks employed by the initial PLA landing forces, which were mostly composed of light infantry. ROC tank crews who had depleted their ammunition used their tanks as road rollers to crush PLA infantry. The pivotal role these tanks played caused ROC troops to give the M5A1 the nickname "Bear of Kinmen" (金門之熊).

        >and are also the least likely to cooperate with conscription
This is the thing imo. It's not like the US military is enjoying much popularity right now domestically and a potential draft would be utterly disastrous, far worse than Vietnam. But I'm 100% sure it will never get to the point that a draft is needed. America just has to hope they can beat their potential enemies with quality manpower, rather than manpower quantity.

The Chinese will be attempting the biggest naval landings since Normandy in a contested passage, with East Asia's biggest indestructible airfield off their coast, while risking their supply lines getting cut off if the US decides to shut down the straits of Malacca or pull a general naval blockade, all while having absolutely no combat experience or even combat tested equipment. Attempting to invade Taiwan would be the most ill-advised military endeavour since Tshushima. (Okay, maybe not that bad, but you get the point)

They're getting closer to making the straits of malaca less relevant with how they are looking internally and through Russia (which will become even closer to them even after getting fricked in the last pipeline deal). What people do t realize is the Taiwanese are the same in regards to very green troops that aren't trained to a very high standard for even a conscription army.

Under artillery and missile fire that is multiple orders of magnitude more precise than what was faced in Normandy. The shortest distance from shore to shore is about 80 miles. The PLAN Type 071 has a speed of 29mph. That's a lot of time on task to be intercepted.

No, the industry being there makes the islands valuable and worth defending. Move the facilities away and there will be less motivation to fight. Which would mean China taking the islands and securing a searoute, creating more problems for the Pacific.
Fabricating plants should be built in those other regions but the ones on the island should remain too.

They can try, but in no way would they succeed.
D-Day x10 is needed to take the island and Taiwan is way more defensible than occupied France with limited landing areas, mountainous terrain, 21st century anti-ship weapons, and the #1 military power in the world as a sworn protector

Lmao good fricking luck. Taiwan is now a red line. Regardless of any lack of defence treaty, a Taiwan invasion will have the USA, Japan (article 9 is going away, mark my words), South Korea, and Australia launching a full naval defense. You think the US and its aligned Pacific nations have put billions into their island chain strategy for nothing? If Taiwan is not safe, nobody in the Pacific is.

Ultimately it depends on how many lives the US is willing to sacrifice trying to defend a country from its neighbor. Taiwan presumably doesn't have the military infrastructure that Ukraine has and transporting provisions won't be as easy as sending them through Europe.

      Anonymous

Australia, Japan, and South Korea are also in alliance with Taiwan. The US is not the only player in the world stage. Taiwan is notoriously difficult to invade because the Taiwanese Strait is basically only traversible 3 months of the year which severely limits the window of operation. The only possible point of invasion is from the west coast since the east is entirely untraversable mountains. and Taiwan has artillery pointed in that direction ready to go. Could China invade Taiwan, possibly, probably with huge losses, but would they is another question. By the time China's military is sufficiently prepared to take Taiwan, geopolitics may have completely changed to make it unfeasible or outright undesireable.

Water. Ships can't go wherever they want whenever they want. It's similar to the American Puget Sound in WA state where most every submarine and a bunch of carriers come and go due to the submarine base in Silverdale, the glowBlack person base also there with a huge hospital on it and the Bremerton military shipyard deal where all the workers are quadruple-vaxxed due to muh fedrul gubermint requirements even though that's never been enforceable. There's also JBLM nearby as well. Frickoff-huge base with the biggest exchange (government taxfree walmart) and commissary (grocery store) on the planet. You can buy guns there for sticker price without ever needing to pay tax. Same with coastguard exchanges and most Marine ones.

Surely the Chinese must realize that the only potential results of such an endeavor is either a Second Century of Humiliation or a Nuclear Holocaust, right?

Why not wait after until America and Russia destroy each other in a nuclear exchange, or America destroys itself in a civil war?
Why take Taiwan through force instead of politically subverting them to the point where they rejoin the PRC voluntarily?
Why take Taiwan at all? China is already one of the largest countries in the world both geographically and by population. What does Taiwan have that they need so badly?

          1) The overall population was increasingly urbanized and this typically has a depressive effect on fertility

          2) the urban population has to work so much to afford what are culturally considered the minimums for a family (owning your house or condo) that it leaves them either never attaining that standard or attaining it far later in life than in prior generations.

          3) Legal and available birth control and abortion

110 mile body of water separating Taiwan from mainland.
The entire island is a mixture of urban areas and dense forests interspersed between five different mountain ranges.
Island is roughly the size of Switzerland but with three times the population density.
Coastal geography limits number of beaches that need to be defended.
      Twenty-three million inhabitants.
Two hundred thousand active military personnel.
      Three hundred thousand first-wave reservists.
      Two million second-line reservists.
The War in Ukraine proves how effective even a limited number of MANPADS, ATGMs, and anti-shipping missiles can be in the hands of motivated defenders.

Yes but also shows how effective SRBM and ARM can be.

Taiwan is unconquerable if they build enough mountain bunkers, enough to house 10% of their population and all of their military.

Ukraine had YEARS to build underground tunnels and bunkers for Ukraine, but they never did. They should have had a tunnel from Kyiv, to Dniro, the Odessa, Kherson, and outside Donetsk, Mauripol, their nuclear power stations, etc. They should have had lots of small exits just large enough to send out BUKs and made themselves unassailable.

Afaik, Taiwan only has a single mountain bunker. That's not enough.

I have no faith whatsoever in their ground forces beyond deterring the amphibious fleet. Their conscripts have less than six months of "training.". Not to mention that island is loaded to the gills with PRC spies, saboteurs and regular people with PRC sympathies. If the PLA establishes a beachhead, its over. The Chinese will not have a manpower problem, the Chinese will not have to deal with defense in depth, the Chinese *will* be mobilized, nothing will be held back because they know what's at stake. I can believe the Taiwanese will put a valiant effort, especially in the mountainside but this isn't Afghanistan or Ukraine, its a fricking island.

Call me Chang or a Chinese shill but that's the long and short of it. Established beachhead leads to a slow and grinding defeat and oppressive occupation.

The saving grace for Taiwan is their airforce and the scale of the maritime operation. If they are capable of surviving a contested airspace AND consistently interdicting the amphibious forces. If the PLA & PLAN have a "40 mile convoy" moment, which isn't unbelievable because this would be the largest land, sea and air invasion in human history, Taiwanese air assets can land a decisive blow. Then and only then they may have a *chance* until America and her allies arrive.
