Can someone explain to me the missile defense early warning system that the Kamov ka-50 and ka-52s have?

Can someone explain to me the missile defense early warning system that the Kamov ka-50 and ka-52s have?

From what a friend tells me they have a large system thats dedicated to tracking radio and IR missiles and what direction they are coming from

How does this work? And why do the Russians put so much crazy tech in their helicopters compared to other countries?

They do have some more modernised tech than the average Russian shit.
They're literally just sensors that detect projectiles (badly) and basic b***h wide band light sensors that detect lasers aimed at the vehicle. These are attached to dazzlers that effectively blind an incoming missile. A strong enough burning Lazer and you can cause short or long term burn out of most front sensors on missiles so it can work.
Some real early reports have the IR blinders blinding stingers, claims that infantry had to use two at once to guarantee to bypass the
defence system and flares, was something mentioned by volunteers relatively early on.

The problem is, the sensors aren't always great, and the dazzlers don't always work, or aren't even on the helicopter in the first place. The two videos of shootdowns using fricking Lazer guided ATGMs makes me wonder what they actually have as defenses really

Being clear though, the sensors can move, but they're mostly front and rear aspect focused during normal operations.

Please say it's not true... almost like those tanks that only shoot or only drive.

        > Sensors have 45 degree fov

        >How does this work?
        it dont

Most likely this. Passive system is probably shit and barely manages to make Christmas tree on your console before you blow up. Active system disabled most of time due to weird interference with other sensors / comms / targeting systems or in fear of being detected.

      Thanks for explaining.

It is quite interesting that with those crappy sensors and lasers they can still defend against a stinger missile which can fly at speeds above mach 2.

With better and newer technology coming out every year, on top of the very helpful ejection system the ka-5x series has, those helicopters could make as a very powerful weapon.

As well as the ka-5x series of helicopters were designed in the 80s, a newer variant would be neat to see.

        The factual answer is:

Russia was lagging behind in helicopter and aircraft self protection systems for a long time.
The Operations in Georgia and Syria showed a lack of modern protection against MANPADS.
Began to modernized and SHOW OFF these new systems notably Vitebsk L370.

Then Ukraine happened and we now get to question the capability of these systems, because of the Orgy of Evidence that Russian rotary wing assets get destroyed A LOT by MANPADS.

There are videos from Ukraine that shows the system working. Webm related shows that one of the helicopters deployed flares less than half of a second after MANPAD launch.

The helicopter knows where the missile is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't.

The system is ok for long and mid range average velocity SAMs.

They can drop in altitude and hope to dodge it with enough warning time.

For manpads it's useless, not enough time to react, maybe frantically fire flares but even those aren't that effective against newer manpads. They should work against old stingers.

  11. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

Heliborne DIRCM systems look for the big old thermal signature of the MANPADS motors (booster and sustainer) and help the aircrew pucker their rectums as the chaff auto-dispenses. No guarantees that they'll detect the launch or effectively defend against them but they're an aide to the MK1 Eyeball of looking for the trail that spells out instant_loss_2koma.jpg for the aircrew. Would doubt the claimed effectiveness of Russian systems and suspect the Ukrainians would have figured out DIRCM systems work on the thermal signature so they'd probably launch from treelines and shit to cover up some of the IR signature from the launch.

Because they were trying to build stuff that could fight Americans, a supremely sophisticated foe.

Fun fact: Ka-52 pilots usually turn the LWR off because it would go off randomly all the time.
This allowed the Stugna crews to just blast TWO Kamovs undetected.
The takeaway is: when Russian MoD claims that system X does Y, always factor in the fact that said system is operated by vatniks, and always assume that it works one time in four.

This is usually the case with russian aircraft RWR, i haven't heard such story specifically about Ka-52 but given the track record of russian warning systems failing and constantly giving off false alarms it wouldn't be surprising.

I think they like the TV guided ATGMs for longer range work. There were a lot of vids of them hitting crossings over some river in Mykolaiv before the Russians withdrew across the Dnipro.
