            Anonymous

            its not """an ambush tank""" there was no doctrine differences between strv 103 and other tanks
            its designed that way because functional turret barrel stabilization tech did not exist and it allows vastly superior crew safety with the tank being completely impenetrable to soviet munitions of the time frontally

        • 1 month ago
          Anonymous

          The strv 103 is a very specialized vehicle for 1960's Sweden's terrain, infrastructure and needs (ambush tank against a Soviet ground invasion). It would be a nightmare to maintenance and supply, but I guess it could be used as a tank destroyer on the Ukrainian plains. Its shit armour that's based on angling from the front would be very vulnerable against drone attacks though.

      • 1 month ago
        Anonymous

        It wasn’t actually good despite what war thunder or world of tanks might have you believe. It was incapable of firing on the move, had no turret, and couldn’t carry out infantry support. If you want to ambush tanks just use an ATGM or ATGM carrier, cheaper and easier to produce.

                It's at the least 2 meters of air.

        The ones that look completely moronic with over a meter between the shell and the armour likely work very well, that is a shitload of standoff for a shaped charge to deal with.
        The big drawback is once you have crossed the field something like this is going to be useless in a town of city because you have effectively turned it into an assault gun by limiting turret rotation that much.

    These are meant to be the lead vehicle in an assault column, the armor is basically huge, impractical spaced armor to allow the lead tank to survive FPV drones.

    If the lead vehicle (usually following a path or road) is knocked out, the rest of the vehicles have to either go around it (and be knocked out by roadside mines) or wind up trapped as the column breaks down.

        I think the sloping of the sheet metal is supposed to defeat the nose fuze of drone munitions dropped from above(like how ww2 torpedoes would slide off the hull if the angle in bow was too low to trigger the pistol), while the tank armor underneath defeats any shrapnel that would go through the sheet metal

      >Its a T-72. I was honestly expecting a T-62.

      Supposedly is a tank with a jammed turret that they converted into an assault plow that also carries infantry on its back. That is why it is covered in metal plates, to protect against shell fragments. It also carries a drone jammer on top which makes drones crash when they get near. It has two small plows in front of the tracks and I assume the autoloader is empty of shells since the turret is jammed, so it wont explode if there is a penetration into the turret.

                Since they couldn't even pass the very, very low bar of simply trying to improve their own situation (it really doesn't matter how, be it protests or simply leaving the country to avoid conscription), I am forced to assume that they're OK with the current state of affairs, even if it involves tens of thousands (or more) of dead russians.
                I can't possibly feel bad for you if you have done absolutely nothing to avoid being in Ukraine, then done absolutely nothing to leave Ukraine, then done absolutely nothing to avoid being in the assault group, then done absolutely nothing to try to surrender. When you die, it won't be because you were forced to die, but because you have decided to not take any of the chances you had at life.

                Anon some ziggers tried to protest when the Ukraine/Russia war was starting but the state police just threw them in jail to rot.

                There’s not much you can do as a single citizen, you do know how poor the average Russian is right? They need a job or there’s no food and a warm house on the table. I know it’s hard to comprehend but you’d probably not protest if it meant rotting in a Russian jail and being forced into the war as a convict soldier.

                And yes the Russians who could flee the country have already done such, I’m pretty sure Russia is experiencing a good amount of brain drain anyway

                Anon, in 2014 about 100 ukrainians were killed but they kept protesting because getting rid of the oligarch in chief was more important, russians have no excuse to accept this crazy war if they were really against it

      Think of it as a mega-APC:
      Hides manpower visually from FPV drones;
      Protects manpower from shrapnel and cluster munitions exploding nearby;
      It works for the intended purpose;

          Standoff distance is relative to the diameter of the shaped charge.
          There's way too many different threats for the same spacing to work against them all.
          Not to mention that just rigging the electronic trigger to make a DIY friendly tandem charge wouldn't hike the cost of current FPVs that much.

              >sometimes, a bit of distance makes it worse
              Many times, physical constraints on the warhead force a suboptimal standoff. Increasing the standoff makes it worse for yourself. Which is why proper modern spaced armor uses dissimilar materials and angles instead of just air gaps.
              >okay but maybe it could not work for other stuff!
              There's a multitude of different HEAT warhead diameters in use, you can't make a copeacabana for every kind of flavor.
              >Nobody said it's a magical force field
              Nobody had to. You said this works because muh spaced armor. Spaced armor doesn't work on HEAT unless it's specifically designed against HEAT. Which at that point is more about structure and composite materials, since the concept of spaced armor is meant to defeat kinetic rounds, not chemical energy based ones.

    >Ivan, I have plan
    >Da?
    >Put more armor on tonk, when armor is hit, enemy will penetrate, but more armor will stop big pointy explosion, is good plan, no?
    >Da.
    And then they gimped a tank, taking the firing angle from 360* to 45*, to provide a dubious extra layer of protection that does nothing to defend against anything that isn't a shaped charge hitting from the side, (mines, artillery, shaped charges hitting from the front/rear, etc).
    It hardly works as a tank, and only works as a troop carrier until the men clinging onto the side are expose to shrapnel from something like an "explosion".
    But.
    It does come back in one piece a bit more frequently, which means it can be used to haul in another wave, meaning it's an improvement in hardware for their current battle doctrine.
