Can red phosphorus be used as propellant?

can red p be used in a musket type gun?

It would probably kaboom, and getting a consistent load would be a huge pain if even possible

It's too sensitive for the propellant but it can be used for the primer.

It can, but it's not good
It's only useful for homemade ammo in homemade guns

follow up: what if the gun uses smalelr ammo like pellets or metal BBs

      Works better
Match-ammo is for craft guns, anything past 22 to 9mm is bad

are you trying to make a pipe muzzleloader?
you can make real black powder with stuff you get at home depot
try not to assassinate any former prime ministers though

honestly not bad, and it seems fairly consistent. If it were sealed inside a cartridge I wonder how much longevity it would have
some comments said you want to avoid grinding it all the way, so that there is still some oxygen in between the grains to burn

thats really good for 2.25". stupid small test barrel unless it burns lightning quick

yeah i assume thats just the gun he happened to have on hand. It would be interesting to see out of a longer barrel

There's some ancient video of a village somewhere in Asia, where the dude's hunt with percussion cap rifles, and make their own powder by crushing up match heads and using wheel weights as bullets. Can't find it.

It's called Armstrong Powder, and it's favored in a lot of places where gunpowder is hard to come by. Folks in Myanmar and Thailand use it for reloading their hunting guns.

Lot of stuff can be used for propellants, but it's sub-par compared to the usual. Just a small list from my own studies and research:
    >Khyber Pass uses recycled film/photograph stock, as it's a type of nitrocellulose.
    >Myanmar/Thailand use strike anywhere matchheads mixed with sugar and charcoal. Creates a psuedo-Rocket Candy mixture that is good for muzzle loaders.
    >Eastern Europe after the fall of the gummybears used strike anywhere matchheads, filmstock, and some wood varnishes.
The last one is actually interesting because I have learned in recent years you can impregnate blotter paper with some Wood Varnish/Finishers, let it dry, and it can be used as faux-smokeless powder. Not the best for velocity, but it works.

      neat.
      >sugar and charcoal
a pinch of rust powder would not be amiss either

armstrong powder/mixture instead of black powder ? you fucking nuts ? do you realize OP mentioned he wants it for a muzzle loader ? do you know it's impact sensitive and used it child cap guns ? do you know what happens when OP rams it with ramrod ?
it's energetic as fuck, even the few milligrams in toy cap make bang, can you imagine what OP will look like when he rams few grams of it in a chamber ?
ITS A FUCKING HIGH EXPLOSIVE (DV of 1,680 m/s)
you just killed OP with your advice, moron

And it's still used by hunters in several rural communities, despite that.
Hence why I mentioned, "Folks in Myanmar and Thailand use it for reloading their hunting guns" and most of those guns are muzzle loaders.

they might use extremely low amounts which is important fact you omitted
even then, I wouldn't even consider it as viable option
there is a reason why there are no high explosives used as propellants, even in artilleries, it's because HE fucking shreds metal
sandmorons when retreating added HE into ammo cartridges they left behind and when enemy captured them and used them, it tore their guns apart, it's called Spiked ammo

red phosphorus (allotrope of phosphorus) on its own wont do shit, its not oxidized fuel
but you posted matches so I assume you mean matchhead compound, which in fact can serve as propellant
don't mix it with striker, just take the matchheads without wood, otherwise you can trigger it while ramming it into muzzle (bad day)
also don't use "strike anywhere" matches, just regular ones
the matchhead compound can differ from brand to brand as can it's power so amount of brand X might work fine while brand Y might blow up your gun (if its not diy gun, it will prolly hold fine)
so yes, its possible to use it as black powder substitute, but take precautions, it can be random

At what point would buying enough matches to get an acceptable quantity of red phosphorus be preferable to buying a jar of black powder now that GOEX is back up and running?
