Can my garage door be saved with a weekend or two's work or should I get a new one?

Looks like surface rust. Take a small hammer and tap any areas that look particularly bad. If it goes through or sounds dull, it's probably over. Otherwise, spray it with a rust converter and leave it. I like 10% phosphoric acid personally

It's surface rust, no areas are weak or feel like I could punch a hole through with a normal amount of force.

Never used rust converter before and my local choices are limited.

Found this Amazon listing, I could pour it in my weed spray backpack and have at it.

Is it very bad if I get it misted on my hands by accident?

I think if you are worried, try and get a gel and brush it on.

You might want to get an oil-base anti-rust primer and paint that on before your paint coat after you use use rust converter. Obviously, you’re going to want to use a fine wire brush to get rid of all the surface rust first.

Do you feel like you could punch a hole through a metal garage door with any amount of force?

Depends. If you are trying to save money, wire brush, powerwash, rust paint, assuming it's only surface rust. I would get an estimate to replace and then decide, this is what I did, even with my own garage door repaired, it was still an old door and its time was up.

Why bother? It matches the house. I'm guessing you're either in Mexico or the Southwest US so it'll take decades to rot totally through. It also tells your neighbors that you're broke and don't have anything worth stealing.

As others said wire brush it or hot it with some scotchbrite to knock off any loose rust and dirt. Then spray or brush on Ospho or some other rust reformer with phosphoric acid. Then after it works on it for a day or two come back and wipe down with some acetone. Either spray paint it or use brushes and rollers and oil based paint.

I would think brushing it on in the cracks and then rolling the flats would give the best finish for that.
