Maybe. Modern day warships are way more advanced and time intensive to build

No. The shipyards are shut down and a lot of them are even demolished. Not only that but the materials for your typical cold war vessel are no longer being produced and there are no skilled workers to manufacture these ships. Basically America only has the industrial capacity to build air planes and limited types of ground vehicles. There will be no way to compete with China in the Pacific, their own backyard, when their entire machine is oriented to pumping out ships on par with US tech and they have the resources and manpower to back that up.

Chinese ships will be blown out of the water half way to Taiwan.

An invasion on Taiwan launched by the Chinese navy would have the same capabilities and follow the same doctrine as the US military. China recently restructured it's forces to mimic American success. If Chinese ships would be blown out of the water half way to Taiwan then so would American ships, and likewise American ships would sink before they reached Chinese territorial waters.

              >would have the same capabilities and follow the same doctrine as the US military
Without any of the air power, an entirely different fleet composition when it comes to hull tonnage and command structure, and an entirely different missile design philosophy and doctrine of use? Excuse my skepticism.

In the year 2022? No. By the year 2026 if we put our backs into it starting tomorrow? Probably.

      >The shipyards are shut down and a lot of them are even demolished.
      True.
      >Not only that but the materials for your typical cold war vessel are no longer being produced
Because they've been replaced with superior alternatives.
      >there are no skilled workers to manufacture these ships. Basically America only has the industrial capacity to build air planes and limited types of ground vehicles
This is wrong, and the rest of your post is blatant alarmism.

Cope you shit eating vatnik. Joe Biden has built the greatest global consensus of our time, and everyone is responding by isolating the voices of 5th column traitors who seek to demoralize efforts to ensure a world safe for our democracy and bolster our defense commitments to contain Russia. Americans hate you so much we are willing to be nuked just to remove the vatnik menace.

probably not to the same scale, because the likelyhood of any major war involving surface fleets would end after about 2 or 3 major engagements.

I have wondered though, in the event of a protracted war, would we opt to go full "retro tech" in some places and just start churning out simplified patterns of ships and vehicles? New Production Neo-Sherman's, Iowa II classes, etc.

This is how California got its current economy. By taking money and labor from all other states and concentrating all of it on the west coast.

Now they act like they pulled it out of their ass.

That large of Navy isn't needed. Before networked radars and communication you needed huge screening forces and escort groups to fan out around your supply lines or combat groups. The tonnage, speed and efficiency of modern Cargo ships dabs on WW2 liberty ships so again you need far less to move the same amount of cargo and since you have less ships and less men you need far less supplies to keep your navy going.

tldr: broad ocean surveillance and intermodal cargo carriers really shrunk down fleet size demands.

I would like to point out that most of the "big ships", cruisers, battleships, carriers of the US Navy were either built before the war or were being constructed when it began. A vast majority of 6000+ extra ships built in the wartime building programs were destroyers / destroyer escorts, submarines, cargo ships or escort carriers based on cargo ship hulls.
Just because a ship class then has the same name as a class today doesn't mean they are anything alike. A Destroyer then was about 2,000 tons, now, 9,000 tons, about the same size as a WW2 Cruiser. An Aircraft Carrier then was about 35,000 tons, now 100,000 tons for one of the Super Carriers. A submarine, around 1,500 tons then 6,000 tons now, up to 16,000 for a missile carrying one.
You could not expect to build as many modern warships as ships back then, not just due to their size but the cost of modern electronics and weapons needed to make them actually relevant on the battlefield. I could see a building program that focused on drone carriers or smaller ships designed to carry missiles but not in the numbers that we saw in WW2. War today is not about how much steel you can bring, it's about finding the target first and landing a pgm on it and that takes a lot of money away from hulls and puts it into sensors and guidance systems.
