California Mosin Shenanigans

I’ve been looking to buy a Mosin in CA, but the prices in the Central Valley are fricking insane. I’ve called every gun store and pawn shop from Modesto to Bakersfield and 3 stores had anything. One store had one that was sporterized, the other store had one for $700, and the last one had 4, ranging from 600 for what looks like a Balkan M91 to 1200 for a Finnish 91/30. Are these what prices are like now or are they gouging? Pic related, it’s the m91

Idk the current nugget prices but you should check online, it would probably be cheaper to ship it to an FFL.

I’ve looked, and most FFLs drag you through the mud with $100+ fees. Include shipping online, and a ~$350 Mosin turns into a $500 one fast.

Humboldt is this place where some fat hick named Hoss will live within the same town where some teen boy is wearing a dog collar and a skirt. I know this because I saw both examples in the last few days. And as for the gun community, it's all fudds. The only people that seem to own AR-15 rifles aside from cops are ancap hippie rednecks with poverty ponies sticky with pot butter.

that's fine. just get a couple thousand dollars saved and move to brookings (if you still want to be close to family), coos bay or any of the other numerous towns along the coast. Humboldt county is a sink (an overpriced sink at that) and by the time you figure it all out you will realize what a joke the north coast of California is.

How is Coos Bay these days? I used to spend a few summers up there when my grandfather lived there. I assume it's a liberal shit hole kinda like Eureka is here.
And I know Humboldt is an overpriced sink especially as the rats fled San Francisco and came here.

its a dumpy coastal town but its still miles above anything on the california coast. there might not be much industry but there is still some tourism and logging. Nowhere near as far gone as Astoria, Eugene or Springfield is.

Honestly, they're not that great and you might be better off just getting any other historical bolt action. Overheat and lock up, get pretty hot in general, stripper clips will frick you up. Fun enough, goes boom really loudly, but nothing special to them.

Sometimes they have decent ammo specials. Bought like 300 rounds of .223 for $180 on the spot when everyone else wanted ~$250 and I wanted to go shooting that day.

They're prices high fishing for idiots, but Mosin prices have gone high. Going rate starts from $400+. If the 600 one was ok I'd keep my eye on it.

In the meantime make an account on Calguns and start browsing the WTS section. Also browse collector's exchange which is usually overlooked.

Also get a C&R/CoE. It'll allow you to mail order ammo and C&R long guns to your doorstep. Plus you can take home C&R handguns from a transfer same day which is going to save your ass from making two drives since living in central valley you'll be driving across the entire state for any worthwhile deals.

It’s an M91 that’s got no matching serial numbers. Imperial eagles are ground off, which makes me think Balkan import. However, it does come with the older style locking ring bayonet.

Then you should buy the Mosin variant that has the better sights. M91/30 sights are better than M91 sights, and Finnish Mansner sights beat both.

Mosins have gone up in price, really nice ones go for 700+ unfortunately. I personally wouldn't go higher than 600 unless it was a PU or collector piece, the value just isn't there for me. You might have good luck prowling local auctions, Mosins aren't exactly uncommon and pop up there pretty frequently, as do spam cans.

For the time being .30-06 is still more expensive than 7.62x54R, though I expect in the future they're going to be much close in cost. Hunting ammo is already similarly priced between the two.

I wasn't aware there was a way to order ammo and have it shipped to your door. In fact, I was under the impression that C&R was essentially worthless due to additional California laws.

        Anonymous

That’s why you need a COE (Certificate of Eligibility), if you have both you can order ammo to your door.

        Resident Wumbologist

Without a CoE it is mostly worthless, although you can buy C&R handguns and rifles in person while out of state without the CoE which I have done.

Sometimes they have decent ammo specials. Bought like 300 rounds of .223 for $180 on the spot when everyone else wanted ~$250 and I wanted to go shooting that day.

$600 is a bit, but nearest runner up I'm seeing is a basic b***h 91/30 from C&RTrader on Calguns for $460 and I've dealt with him before, and he's an butthole and he's going to charge gas for driving to meet you.

I've had pretty good results sourcing 308/7.62x51mm for a sane price. If you just want a rifle you can shoot a lot have you thought about getting a nice bolt action in 308? You can probably get something better than a Mosin, cheaper or both.

          Anonymous

Well I haven't even put a single round through most of my guns so I have little to gain from ordering ammo to my door. Especially as it seems like few vendors even deal with California these days plus getting both the feds and stateies involved in my business is anathema to me. I just see it as signing up for too much interference for something that can be cucked away even more via expanding restrictions.

I started calling into stores in Modesto and Bakersfield themselves even if I don’t want to travel that far for a fricking Mosin. Two more stores have something, with one store having a M44 for $350 on consignment and the other store had two “russians” (as the guy I called so eloquently described) for 500 a piece. If I wanted a carbine, I’d have jumped on the m44. Also now that I think about it, the store here in Fresno is charging 600 for their m44. Shits wack

            Resident Wumbologist

I recommend getting that $350 M44, that's a pretty reasonable price if it's in ok condition.
It's a "carbine", but the barrel is still 20" long. Just not as ridiculously long as a regular M91.

Just remember that it's zeroed with the bayonet extended and that is how it's meant to be fired.
