CALICO

Calico owners report in. I hardly see these guns discussed on PrepHole.
Somehow, amazingly, the company is still in business and selling guns. I'm interested in the M-110 22lr pistol to put a silencer on and SBR - is this a good idea? Are the new production ones any good?

I keep wanting to buy one of those but keep putting it off. IIRC MSRP is about what you pay anywhere according to an anon. Would love to get one though.

yeah it's temping to drop the $ just for a fun plinker.
I think I'd get the regular M-100 instead. Comes with the cool stock. And, the barrels are QD so I could just shoot it normally till the stamp comes back, then engrave a pistol barrel.
Some YT vids show phenomenal reliability, others show crap. Still hard to tell if that's due to the old vs new production or ammo or whatever

Calicos tend to run finicky at best from the mag design being less than perfect
I cannot imagine adding a suppressor to the mix would help
Would be good for a range toy but not much else

cans often help with rimfire reliability

Atleast 9mm calicos got their reputation as unreliable mainly because fudd rednecks didn't bother to RTFM, wind magazine spring right amount and keep their mags and gun clean and lubricated. Don't know about .22 version, but rimmed cartridges are often more prone to feed issues so...

wrong. Ian was desperate to own the chuds and ended up showing the world how fundamentally flawed the design is.

rollers not locking all the way, so the hammer uses some energy pushing the bolt instead of impacting the primer

oh, fouling in the rollers? that sounds like a pain in the ass to clean

        >wind magazine spring right amount
Every other magazine I own I can just push bullets in until they stop going in without having to do my best impression of the Count from Sesame Street to get the exact right number of turns on the spring.

I own one of the thumbhole-stock .22 rifles. Fits me perfectly, love to shoot it, but like says it's a jam-o-matic, probably mostly a magazine problem.

I've come up with a better mag design for them, but the required smoothness of the parts means I'd need to do actual molds rather than just 3D-printing, and I don't think it's worth the couple of hundred thousand in tooling just to not have a range toy jam three or four times in every magazine.

      >I cannot imagine adding a suppressor to the mix would help
The design is strictly blowback. A suppressor would have nearly zero effect on it. If anything, it might help because of the extremely tiny possible increase in backpressure.

Magpul has the d-50. The benefit of smushing the volume needed slightly differently just isn’t there in my opinion.

Why bother when there's already the Magpul D-50? What would the Calico spiral mag hold? Doesn't even look like as many as the Magpul, guessing 30 to 36 from the image.

I was looking at the pistol and it looks like it's manufactured just differently enough that you can't slap a stock on it. Though I could be wrong.

Yeah, I guess that makes the most sense. It's just that finding someone to cut and thread the barrel for me is such a drag.

The M11 uppers run well. If you really want one of their firearms I would buy locally or online via a retailer that has them in stock. Do your research before sending CLWS a check (BBB, reviews, online forums, etc.) I'm still waiting on items from 6+ months ago that the owner's wife said were in stock and would ship out when the check cleared. They will only accept checks, so when they don't ship after 2 weeks you're fuct and can't dispute the charges like a CC. If you choose to buy directly, Good luck.

Seconding this. I tried to buy an M100 two years ago, got an email saying they had a 6 month lead time and then never heard from them again.

I've seen the old wood stock M-100S models at local gunshows but I'm leery about buying a used one.

Cancle the check with the bank, if you still can. The bank will likely charge a fee. Calico (the old owners supposedly) stoke $1200 from ne fir a 22lr M11 upper.

It does seem like they *eventually* ship shit out. Someone on Reddit says they were having issues with bolt material supplier

Not really, with a credit card people can dispute the charge, or if it's only charged at shipping time people can cancel the card before then.

Postal MOs are a pain in the ass and provide zero benefit over a check. I had someone send me a couple of big money orders, and the Post Office kept stalling me on cashing them -- "we don't have enough money in the drawers, come back tomorrow afternoon." Finally one day I threw a shitfit and miraculously one of the counter guys had more than enough money in his drawer, even though thirty seconds earlier they all claimed they didn't -- it was just a fucking game to them because they're lazy shits who don't want to do their jobs.

What other payment methods are there? PayPig and the other online payment processors ban gun transactions. Bitcoin is volatile and a pain to cash out of, and businesses aren't into riding the adoption cycles (and I've made a shitload off Bitcoin, it let me retire five years ago).

Checks? It's still fraud if they steal the money and never ship, just ask Jonathan Ciener.
