Buying my boys(15 and 13) big boy rifles this year. Should I go for .308 or 6.5CM?

Buying my boys(15 and 13) big boy rifles this year. Should I go for .308 or 6.5CM? It'll be a basic savage deer rifle either way.

.243 Win is the best youth caliber

I should say they both enjoy shooting my .308 so recoil for either of these two calibers isn't a big deal. Ammo price is a consideration tho but not the biggest one.

If they can handle the recoil of a .308 then yeah it’s a good option, but keep in mind that .243 is pretty cheap unless you’re shooting 7.62 surplus out of the .308

This. I started with a 7mm08 when I was 9 and developed bad habits from using such a large caliber for someone sub 100lbs.

My dad still kills a couple deer a year with his grandfather's .243 and it has never been found wanting for power.

.243 as my first centerfire, a single shot youth model. My dad used it for a couple hunts, he fucking loved it. It’s a great caliber for anything smaller than elk, and frankly it could probably take down an elk if state laws allowed it.

I harvested my first elk with .243. It is definitely enough round so long as your state allows it

6.5 cm is pretty close in recoil impulse to 243. They’re both good medium game rounds for women/kids

13 and 15 are hardly youths. They will both be full grown adults in a few years. Better not to buy some pussy caliber that they won't be incredibly useful in a few years, except for small dear at closer ranges and pest control.

.308 all the way. Let them decide if they want admittedly good but meme caliber rifle. .308 can get you thru the shit hitting the fan

6.5CM, it'll be the caliber of their generation so you might as well set 'em up for that. Hope your boys slay some deer!

It’s always easier to find 308 hunting loads in stock than sneedmore

Creedmore, it's objectively a better round and I won't be surprised if it completely supplants .308 as the standard within their generation.
Price and availability are already comparable with .308.

Go to Walmart and see what they have more varieties of. Get that.

      >completely supplants .308 as the standard within their generation.
Do you also carry a dozen rubbers on your first dares? Because that's some optimism!

      >are they into long range precision shooting y/n

If not, .308. It's the practical future proof economical choice. If they're cross eyed homosexuals that could use the reduced recoil 6.5. The .308's going to be more relevant for larger game than deer if they chose to do so.

IF they're in open country hunting wise perhaps. Otherwise it's hard to pass up .308 loadings at the price and availability, especially for larger game. 6.5 has accuracy at range, but not terminal effect.

        >6.5 has accuracy at range, but not terminal effect
This was true a few years ago when 6.5 first came in vogue. At that time, everything was HPBT. Nowadays there are many more loads for 6.5 with actual, proper hunting bullets loaded. Once federal made a fusion in 6.5, it all changed. Soft points and ballistic tips are widely available. If Remington was still making core-lokt, they would have a 6.5 load by now.

My vote is still for .308 though.

    .22-250.
My grandfather and a lot of old timers swear by it for deer and antelope.

    This.
Also, if you reload you can load 125grain powder puff loads, about the recoil of a 7.62x39mm and less than a .30-30 or 6.5Creedmore

If you don't reload, you need to learn. Even .308 is around $30+ a box now.

On that note, a .300 blackout lever action would be COOL and versatile enough to be something one would reasonably expect them to retain and pass down.

.243 Win is the best youth caliber

Not the worst choice by a long shot.

I say .308 because it takes more rounds to shoot out the barrel. You want this gun to last a good long time for sentimental reasons

.270 Win. Best all-around hunting caliber for everything up to medium game ever invented.

.270 win is commonly used for moose and Jack O'Connor used it on grizzly bear.

Jack O'Conner was a crack shot with a doctorate in griz anatomy. I wouldn't try that shit.

.308. with 6.5 there's like 50 different bullet weights and very little hunting ammo. With .308 you just go pick up a box of 150 grain soft points anywhere. Barrel also lasts way longer.
