Bundeswehr to receive first Iris-T SLM next year

>The Air Force will have new air defense capabilities as early as next year, according to current Defense Ministry plans. According to a response from Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Hitschler to a question from CDU member of parliament Kerstin Vieregge, the contract for the accelerated procurement of six Iris-T SLM fire units as part of the Ground-based Air Defense Immediate Package is to be concluded before the parliamentary summer recess in 2023. "Delivery of the first fire unit is to take place in 2024, and of the other five by 2027," the response continues. Thus, the Bundeswehr apparently intends to take up the entire offer submitted by the manufacturer Diehl a few weeks ago. According to sources in the industry, this included a firm order for three fire units and an option for three more.

>Hitschler went on to say that the capability gap for defense against small and very small drones based on a platform with a cannon and guided missile is also to be closed on an accelerated basis from 2025. This is likely to be the Skyranger system offered by Rheinmetall with a 30-mm gun on a Boxer chassis.

>According to the state secretary, subproject 3, entitled "Follow-on Capabilities," of the "Close and Proximity Protection" (NNbS) project envisages four combined fire units with the IRIS-T SLM and IRIS-T Surface Launched Short Range (SLS) effectors, six fire units purely for close-range protection with the IRIS-T SLM effector, as well as capabilities for countering small and micro drones weighing less than 150 kg and for combating rockets, artillery and mortar rounds.

On another level, the plane-carried version can even intercept AA missiles.

Technically you can do that with most modern IR missiles

On paper better than any short/medium range AA.
However it's not a long range system like patriot or S-xxx

The Ukrainians, being the only ones with actual combat experience on the system, seem to love it.

it was originally an A2A missile, where it can even shoot down incoming missiles and planses behind you, so the range is pretty short, but it's crazy agile and can hit even tiny targets reliably.

The seeker and warhead come from a fairly modern german made A2AM. There are three variants of the ground launched varian, which differ in range. SLS is simply the A2AM launched from a container, SLM and SLX have larger boosters to increased range.

The SL system family offers a lot of advantages for militaries that also use the A2A missile in terms of streamlining logistics. If we believe official numbers from Ukraine, the missiles have an extremely high hit probability vs cruise missiles and drones (close to 100%).

I am sure that CAMM is a great system. If you already operate the IRIS-T in your airforce, IRIS-T SL is the logical system to buy.

Pretty much like any other modern NATO AD missile.
So alien technology to the Russians.

CAMM is too sensitive to go to Ukraine, unlike short ranged IR guided missiles which lack an all weather capability like IRIS-T.

You are literally sending it to Pakistan, which will let everyone else have a look.
The reason that our enemies do not produce modern equipment is not because they do not know the specifics, it is because they can not manufacture the high tech components.
      >We are not donating it because our missile, that we sell around the globe, is more secret than their missile they sell around the globe!
No. It's because of some political or strategic reasons that elude us.

          >However, in 2021 - the Pakistan Navy revealed that it had selected the Albatros NG surface-to-air missiles developed by MBDA, instead.[13] The Albatros NG - a variant of the CAMM-ER naval anti-air missile, features an approximate range of over 40 km (25 mi), with the capability to neutralize various aerial threats - including anti-ship missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and precision-guided munitions.[14] Incidentally, the PN MILGEM corvettes are also the first surface warships to utilize the Albatros NG.

moron, I'm not saying we've not sold it to them. I'm laughing at your dumb suggestion that because Pakistan has it it means everything sensitive is revealed. Pakistan is a nuclear state and has a close relationship with the UK.

CAMM isn't the NGAD radar. Like most military tech it isn't super secret and every operator and technician gets a look. The advantage lies in the production tech that nobody can copy.

Though the gap between IRIS-T SLM and Patriot against fighter targets is pretty close - with the no escape zone even favors IRIS-T SLM.

It'll never happen because some nations are overly protective of their domestic industry. CAMM is seeing huge export success to nations that aren't making their own missiles though.

multiple competing systems also means there's always a new system arriving on the scene often with alternate capabilities. Makes it harder to counter.

It's really not. The CAMM-ER version has a 5km longer range but 10km less altitude, that's not a good tradeoff

                Anonymous

CAMM range is heavily understated, the 25km+ version has been tested out to 60km

The militaries with the real data are buying CAMM in large numbers, especially at sea where range maters a lot more than on land.

      Anonymous

They will need just to add more launchers for SLX. The same way as Ukraine will add new SLS launchers for existing SLM batteries
