Building an ar15
What are recommended scopes 1k-1500
Preferably something I can use up close and far range so variable

Should I go with holo and magnifier?
Acog?
Doesn’t have to be 1k+ but could use some help deciding

I’ve never shot past 800 yards and figure if I need to defend myself it’s close to medium range

whats your build? What ranges are you shooting at? worry about fancy optics later. Spend extra money on ammo

i understand that you solved it i was just calling you stupid

Phone posting right now so I can’t give a detailed list but pretty much a lmt upper and lower except for buffer
I need a sight because I had prk eye surgery and while I can see 20/20 my eyes can strain when I focus too hard; as well give slight halos when focused

So I’d rather just buy the sight or sights
My eyes not being strained as well having a quality sight is important to me
Though I understand your main point and will drop a considerable amount on ammo too
Also only indoor shooting with my handgun and an occasional out door range

I’ve really wanted to get into long range shooting but no gun for that yet
Might just find a dedicated rifle for it like someone else mentioned

yeah I would suggest a dedicated rifle if youre going into long range.
If you're just rocking a 14-16" build you can't go wrong with an LPVO. I don't have a lot of experience with them (or the type of eye surgery you're talking abt I have a high astigmatism but I don't really suffer from eye strain issues per se) I'd consult YT for some reviews. Brassfacts and Hoplopheil had quite a lot of videos reviewing various ones I'd look there

      >use up close and far range so variable
look into a magnifier, eotech g45 magnifier and an aimpoint t2 is one of the best setups available for close range and can reach out and touch someone a ways out

(PS: make sure your optic mount is the same height as your magnifier, or else it won't be aligned)

ACOGS are good for medium range but suck at close range, so I'd pick a magnifier

ey b0ss, welcome to the fold

        >ACOGS are good for medium range but suck at close range

You aren't wrong, but ACOGS are so phenomenally good at what they do, they still warrant consideration.

This is why after using every setup conceivable, for the target result OP wants an ACOG with a piggyback or offset is amazing to use. LPVOs are good for, let say, "hitting targets" or DMR type roles, (imo the new SAI 1-6 is the best on the market and priced fairly), but for actual fighting or defensive use the ability to have two static, unchanging sights for close/far is unbeatable.

TLDR; TA110 or TA02 with forward mount fully enclosed red dot (holo 509t or acro p2) for example in my opinion is the meta for what you want.

The problems with a magnifier/red dot setup are simply you have to manually activate them and they ad a ton of bulk and width to your rifle, they get annoying when running and gunning FAST. I suppose it works if you train hard with it, but I just don't see it as the meta that proponents claim it to be.

To simplify everything and have everything you want in one item, the Primary Arms 1x (the new one) and 2x are great options to consider. If you have good vision, the advantages of the Primary Arms 1x prism is the fact the reticle is much sharper and finer than a traditional red dot, allowing you to take precise shots and longer ranges, while still being 1x, and ultra-light. Not to mention having an etched reticle means the reticle wont disappear when using a light.

        (in b4 poormary arms reeee)

Why does everyone recommend the acog versions with battery power?
          Is the fiber that bad?
Or is it solely for the multiple settings?

            Anonymous

            >can put rds on front of acog instead of back if you ever decide to piggyback (good for night vision as it gives space to put goggles behind the red dot)
That's really it. Normally all you need is the etched reticle and one can argue that the battery one's electronics will outlast tritium. The battery one is heavier though unfortunately and I wouldn't shit on someone going with the tritium with that in mind.

    Best for 11-16" barrel ar15
    >acog ta02
    >canted or piggyback acro
Otherwise just acog and figure out on your own that pointing and shooting a rifle inside 5 yards is ridiculously easy without aiming down a sight.

For typical Ar15 use I would use a dot and magnifier of good quality. For 0-300m
Longer shots for things that bleed I would use rifle with better terminal ballistics like an ar10

        >How is shooting with the sight on top of the acog?
Personally, I dislike piggyback repositioning my face. It's doable but shooting quickly gets a bit harder. Some people like it though. Canted problem is that it makes for a wider gun and easier to snag/break optic but it's faster and easier to use while shooting quickly in my opinion.

I had the ACOG ECOS model. Shifting to a chinweld is not difficult, I fail to see how this is a problem. What I don't like is the height of the rifle and scope with the RMR banging around and snagging at times, this is alleviated by training.

If you're not concerned with long range, a 16" or a 14.5" with a pinned muzzle device would do just fine.

As for optics, I'm a fan of the Primary Arms prism sights. Probably a 3x or 4x for what you're describing. It's like an ACOG, but doesn't cost $1200+

My personal build is basically an Aero A4 clone with a Primary Arms 5x

This is horrific advice that reeks of poorgay. OP just needs either an ACOG or something like a Viper PST or similar LVPO.

What does an ACOG offer that a PA doesn't? Tritium?

        >LPVO
        Which LARP-Tuber told you that?
In what circumstance is someone using the magnifications levels between 1x and the maximum magnification? Do these niche circumstances justify an extra $700?

OP's building something practical, not gucci'd-out eye candy for Instagram.

If you're spending more on scopes and lasers than ammo, you're doing it wrong.

          >What does an ACOG offer that a PA doesn't?

Glass clarity, Massive field of view, both of which are highly important on magnified optics. Tritium I couldn’t give a shit about. I own both and while the PA is nice for the money the acog pisses in its eyes every day of the week

Keep it simple and get an ACOG. It's moron proof, drop proof, 80 proof, waterproof, simple to use and most of all high quality. I recommend the chevron reticle and greatly detest the crosshair reticle. It's way too much information that will bloom into a smudge anyways even with tape over the fiber.

I misread the OP, I thought the whole build was $1k-1.5k, not just the optic.

The modularity of the ar platform has led to extreme Judaism in firearms business practices. Allow me to explain.

    >"Complete" upper does not include bolt carrier group

    >Buy quick disconnector
    >Buy quick disconnector female end that mounts to the rail

what about the ELCAN SPECTER DR THE MOST CHAD OPTIC and honestly I think 4x is good even at 500yards, it wont be a big target like 10x but you're not doing precision shooting, and with that you can still get on target easily while also having optimal magnification for the other non limit ranges.

lpvos are a bit of a meme, I think they're good for DMR ar10 in 8x or 10x
