Budget tent choice?

Pic related, naturehike cloud up 2, is that the current choice for a lightweight, budget friendly comfy tent? On sale on Amazon atm, some people like the cloud peak 2 more? They have others like the mangoo or whatever it is. What other recommendations?

Am in Australia, but it’s getting quite windy atm, and also snowing in my area higher up.

I've had a cloud up 3 for a few years, it's a great tent. Would buy again.
The 2 would be small for 2 persons + bags.
Buy one with the extra sole if you plan on using it on rough and or abrasive terrain.

They are not the same material, the more expensive ones are lighter, more waterproof but more fragile also.

Green one made from worse, more heavier material, go with the white one.

I've been looking through AliExpress tents for a while and settled on the cloudups and lanshans. Wound up pulling the trigger on the lanshan 1 pro. The cloudup 2 was my second choice.

Might also be worth checking out the msr freelite, 127x213cm floor, two layer freestanding tent that weighs about 1060 grams, though costs $370. Cloud up 2 is 125x210 and 1890g (dunno if that includes accessories). The Lanshan 2 is 120x230cm, single layer and 915g, though it needs two trekking poles so that's about 500g extra.

In reality any of these tents should be fine, just buy on Amazon if you want the return policy.

Just wanted to mention that white tents under a full moon is like camping in front of car headlights, the whole inside lights up. Just something to keep in mind.

wrong, the white red one is made with the same 20D material as the green one. The white gold one is the one with 10D and much lighter.

At that price point, I'd get something name brand. Marmot has better two person tents in this range.

Also, Hyke and Byke makes a two person tent that's lighter and about $50 cheaper. I'd trust them based on the legit nice cheap sleeping bags they make. They're like like Klymit than wish.

Yes, naturehike is fine, chinkshit but has a decent reputation (they steal designs from MSR and other companies and reproduce them for less money, and slightly less quality).

I looked into the naturehikes and Lanshan quite a bit this spring.
After a lot of reviews and spec comparisons I've come to think they are not worth it.
Back when they were 75$ it made sense as a good tent to take out with a friend to share the weight. However, at 5lbs you can get a tent on sale for the same price that isn't a knockoff.
I got a Sierra Designs full moon 2 for 120$ on sale last weekend as a tent I can bring with when I take my dog and wife.
I got a AliExpress 15D nylon tarp on the way for solo trips. 3x3 meters at about 1lb packed weight. If I carried hiking poles already I would have gone for the Lanshan, but I really dislike hiking poles.

Well, the tent does cost only roughly 40 euros, so for the price you can hardly beat it. And OP did ask for budget options. I do admit there are better tents available but they will naturally cost more.
Or, replace the tent poles with sticks sourced from the nature or telescoping hiking poles and you are down to roughly 2,2 kilos.

Tent is one of those things that you should not spend not enough money on, you're going to sleep in it after all

              Anonymous

That is true. Although I personally haven't had any issues with that said tent aside from condensation. I used to sleep in it about for about a month per summer for few (5 or so, can't remember exactly when I bought mine) years due to the old house where I lived in getting so damn warm. That is in addition to shorter durations during around the year whenever I had time for hikes and such, I found the tent good for me and my pal, one took the tent and one took the awfully heavy pegs and possibly an extra tarp, almost never though.
Only after my ~40kg rottweiler (yes he was a small boy, RIP now though) decided to run over the guylines due to some bird and ripping one of the guylines off while he was at it, did I have to start repairing it and resealing the seams of it.
I personally like the traditional feeling of a niger-style small telt and the fact that it doesn't stand out as much as some other tents due to its colouring. If you know of better tents for ~2 persons, maybe for their equipment as well, please do tell, I could upgrade mine eventually if I can find a decently priced tent. If I am buying a new tent, it should be a 4 season tent though.

how much should you expect to spend on a cheap tent you only intend to use for a few months off and on for work? I’ll be working out in the woods with people for a job and you’re supposed to get a tent. My friend said when he worked for them he just got a cheap one from Walmart. this is on the east coast so won’t get snow or rain or anything

West coast my bad, allegedly you set the tent up at camp and you leave it there for as long as the job lasts which could be a week two or three

        Anonymous

Really depends. It'll be your home away from home. If it was a motel it'd be 50-100 a night, so frankly a 200+ dollar shelter makes fine sense to me. You're gonna want a tent with lots of ventilation for breeze so perhaps a REI half-dome clone is about the minimum id go. Maybe a seatosummit if you want some serious interior room; that depends on your other facilities.

I've got Lanshan 2 pro and it's enormous for 1 person. Used it for 20-30 nights and never got wet even though I haven't seam sealed it yet. Also tested it in pretty strong wind and everything was ok. I would probably pick Lanshan 1 pro for hiking alone, but I often accomodate another person unexpectedly and I'm used to all the extra space now. Also forced me to use trekking poles, which I really like now. If you wanna buy one, watch out for production year, they differ in size. Overall 10/10 value. Most of my gear is UL chinkshit and the value is unbeatable, unless you live in US. You can also find really good value in Decathlon on some things, like Merino base layer.

        Anonymous

What's the condensation like? I just got the lanshan 1 pro and love how small it packs, though haven't used it. I'm feeling a little regret not just getting the 2 person size since double doors would allow a comfy breeze, but I doubt it matters much. Should be able to get some trail time on the 1p next month.

Also planning on using this silicone to seal it, I've read good things vs gearaid and diy silicone.

Only lightweight if you already carry trekking poles.
The Nemo Hornet on a good sale is like 230$.
If you use it over 5 years it pays itself off, and it holds value if you take care of it.

Here is a pic of my minimal setup.

Just by getting a down sleeping bag, getting a lighter sleeping pad, and going from tent to bivy I've cut my sleep system to what I can keep in the front pocket of a 20L backpack.
I add a tarp in if the weather isn't perfect. Hopefully the lightweight tarp and bug bivy will cut this down even more, and make it more weather versatile.

I used to have a really shit tent. It was my wife's. Big enough 3 with room. I've been in torrential rainstorms. I've been in a squall that blew it flat. But as long as it was set up properly, I never got any water inside. Water would drip through the fly, but as long as the fly didn't touch the tent it was fine. Waking up every hour to do an inspection was not exactly a relaxing way to sleep, but we made it through the night dry which is what counts.

So, long and short is if you set it up properly a cheap tent will survive extreme situations.

I've had mine for years, it's fine. Keep in mind that the sole is light and thin so don't pitch it on sand or rocks or whatever.
If you want to pitch it on rough surface, use the ad hoc sole.

Other anon isn't correct. But naturehike is fibbing a bit too. With stakes, the ground cloth, stuff sack the cloud2 is 4.7-4.8 pounds. HykeandByke is like 5.7 for the same arrangement. The Zion is more durable, and has a better water resistance rating. And very nicely (if you're not forever alone) it has a double vestibule, one on either side so you can get out without climbing over people and store a bit more stuff outside your tent comfortably. Which I would bet is where some of the extra weight comes.

I have had pic related for about 2 years now. Holds up surprisingly well. Some taped holes in the fly due to pig attack, kek.

Surprisingly good in rain but bad when the wind hits from the side. Lots of pegs and rope to make it more sturdy included.

Too small for 2 people for more than 2 nights. Also gets wet due to hitting the walls.

Big for 1 person though but relatively heavy if you carry it alone but easily manageable.

Quality and construction is fine for the money. 6/10

i need an entire new sleeping system, my doctor wants me to switch to a tent because i broke my neck a few years ago. i'm small and i'm used to sleeping in hammocks and bivys so i don't need a very big tent.
