what do they do to the pilot if they determine it was his fault?

        Lockheed will probably fire him.

        Anonymous

Depends on the circumstances and the pilot's track record. Training a military pilot is a hugely expensive and time-consuming process and there already aren't enough to go around, so if it's an understandable one-time frickup by somebody who's otherwise well-liked and has a good record it may not be a big deal, at worst it'll mean a few extra years before the next promotion. In worse cases it could be a career killer, something that prevents a pilot from ever moving up to a command level, it could mean being moved to a less desirable platform, or if it was really egregious malfeasance or the pilot was a known frickup it could mean spending the rest of his/her career behind a desk.

          Anonymous

ahh move him to a cheaper place, that's what I was thinking I'd would do. then fire him if he crashes that one outside of combat.

          Anonymous

This was a contract pilot flying from the factory [to yuma?]. He will probably just get fired for allegedly trying to do a short/vertical takeoff without checking the numbers to see if an F35 loaded with that much gas at this time of year at this time of day localized entirely at an airfield above 5300' MSL can actually do a short/vertical takeoff.

            Anonymous

Shit, that makes it worse for his prospects. I wonder how the frick you even become a contract ferry pilot in F-35s, I assume you have to have a fighter pilot background but I can't imagine there are many people who qualified on F-35s in the military and are already out working civilian contracts, I guess maybe somebody who aged out or had some kind of medical issue that disqualified him from military flying but not civilian?

It's not like they're learning to employ the systems, they just need to be able to take off and land and deal with basic emergencies and apparently the takeoff part is optional.

I refuse to give him a (You), but they are doing a Raptor modernization program because it can't do a lot of the things the F-35 can in its current configuration. Problem is that it's supposed to take 10 years, and by then we'll see NGAD's flying in number.

      >by then we'll see NGAD's flying in number.

That's the same timeline as the F-35. We should see the NGAD submissions this year, plus ten years.

I'm assuming you're being disbelieving, but 10 years for NGAD to get off the ground is definitely doable.

Overlapping programs are normal in military aviation as are avionics and SLEPs. B-52 isn't still flying in original configuration either.

Combat aircraft are like Grandpa's Axe of Theseus. Once meatless wienerpits are the norm development cycles can accelerate and airframes won't be burdened by internal G-limited squishies.

        Anonymous

I really hope I live long enough to see pilotless fighters go from their baby stage through advancing materials science so rapidly to fix the physical weaknesses that are either outright unknown at current time or otherwise ignored due to pilot G limits.
Imagine in the 2060s a plane that can make 25G turns and spike in the 30s. Exo-atmo skimming hyper gliders that can bounce-dip-bounce around the world at mach 11 with a half-day endurance. Fleets of disposable, suicidable micro jets all self coordinated as a theatre's CAP/CAS.

Frick man why do we have to be so primitive still.

You can thank the morons who jump at any opportunity to raid and spam the board whenever any Western nation has a mishap. Then they flee back to their board and demand mods protect them from criticism/ridicule.
An aircraft accident is not good, regardless who suffers it. Hopefully it was just pilot error (and the pilot can be interviewed) and not something with the actual plane.

      Anonymous

      >So, what do we think, pilot error or ground crew error?

If you're not involved in combat aviation working F-35 there is no way to have a likely hypothesis.
That's why I limit my specific details to what I know and in-depth shit to what I worked on.

Pilot, maintenance, component failure and combinations thereof can cause Class A mishaps but without being both an expert and a witness there's not much to offer. The accident investigation board will figure it out and there is zero reason to hurry so they don't. Crash Recovery (from another unit not involved in that sortie or with that aircraft) will map the crash then pick up the pieces for storage in whatever hangar is convenient. That will be guarded by some bored SecFo troops.

Then it will be examined and parts like the engines will be further disassembled and inspected. Other parts will be laid out after inspection in their general relative locations. Any CSFDR and other data will be downloaded where available. Everyone who worked on or was closely involved gets a piss test. The format is standard to cover all bases not just what's assumed.

The investigation board will be appointed (from other units) per whatever the current AFI requires. Aircraft and component maintenance histories (serially tracked items etc) will be reviewed. If a component had a history of interest that will be investigated. It's a shitload of work but done every time.

Flying is pretty safe these days. The Safety peeps are outstanding at predicting loss rates and causes in advance. Back in the 1980s the USAF alone used to crash roughly a squadron (~24 jets) per year but the fleet was fricking huge and it's loss RATE that matters not the drama.

Rate per hour is why none of us give a shit about car crashes killing over 30K Burgers/year because loss rates like incest are relative.

Oh cut it, I'm not [...] anyway. I just can't help but laugh at the jihadi fury ITT by other Americans working their hardest to defend the honor of the F35(peace be upon its name).

One simply has to savor the amount of seethe happening ITT, even if its coming from fellow countrymen.

kek, I'm torn on this one as I'm not sure whom I want to bait today. Even as an American, I've been on /k/ long enough to know that any F35/F22 accidents are such weapons grade shitpost material that it becomes almost impossible to resist playing pretend-vatnik.

Abraham Ricey was his name, if you rendered squiggles into a real language like English.

    >A F-35 fighter jet just crashed during takeoff at Albuquerque

And, oh yeah, three of the airplane engines burned out
And we went into a tailspin and crashed into a hillside
And the plane exploded in a giant fireball and everybody died
    Except for me
    You know why?
'Cause I had my tray table up
And my seat back in the full upright position

Yet it's had less losses due to accidents, pilot error, weather and other problems than say, F16 in a similar timeframe. Your bias is clear and it's affecting your judgement.

So people cannot discuss an F35 crashing and resort to just calling everybody brown? Russia is not even involved in this, no need to shill, just discuss it without all the intense copium and insulting

What is there to discuss? An aircraft with a low incident rate had an incident. Shit happens, nobody has a success rate of 100%.

now tell us, how did they get to those cities in the first place?
Or enlighten us on how the Pale worked?

Did it not involve depopulating Russian cities of their israeli diaspora and forcing them upon places like East Poland, Belarus, the Baltics, and otherwise? It's really strange how the israeli populations of these areas seemed to spike during the 1700s and 1800s... But hey, that's just a small coincidence, right?

Russians have been accused and have now open investigations into male on male rape.

      It's all over the news
Russians have been called out by a couple international tribunals and courts for being flaming homosexuals today.

Russian soldiers are telling the investigators it's not gay to rape another man. The captured Russians don't think the raping of boys is gay. I'm not exaggerating. Google it.
That explains the 20 f 35 crash threads that they keeps making

If the engine didn't quit altogether (a flame out perhaps, maybe FOD) there sure was a dramatic loss of thrust, so pilot correctly ejected right before becoming a smear on the runway. The aircraft became suddenly lighter, so ground effect was probably enough to keep the aircraft from crashing: it has happened many times before that a jet fighter became suddenly stable and even flew a long long way after pilot ejection
