      Maybe plastic training rounds?

        Anonymous

I doubt it. I've shot the weird blue plastic ones out to like 75m and they still make nice little circles.

How the frick does it even get that bad? Smoothbore with no rifling made? Even a worn down barrel would at least put some spin.

If you had seen some of the development pics of these fricking things you wouldn't be surprised.
For example, the ejection port has this weird little notch on top towards the rear.
What happened with that was in the initial prototype it was a squared off opening, but for some reason the extractor kept kicking cases up into it at that point and jamming.
Instead of going back and fixing the bolt design they instead just kept filing the prototype at that point, widening the port hole until it worked, and voila - the production gun now has a milled rise at that specific point.
The whole gun is a klodge job. I'm surprised they even brought it into adoption.

The backstop supports this idea. Since its not a backstop seems more like some sort of limestone wall. Should be smashed rock dust coming off with real bullets.

Not him but I still think these are some gimped training rounds. Full power cartridges would make short work of that wall. The questionable backstop makes sense for training with plastic/wood or whatever rounds, right? It is like the boomers using wax bullets, putting holes on paper is great practice

Its surprising just how shit bullets are against breezeblock. Youtube e.g. 5.56 makes it to the center cavity, a single layer breezeblock wall good probability of full cover from it. Pistol bullets just make shallow marks on the outside.

But if your running a range and people are machingunning same wall repeatedly while other ppl running around behind it IDK maybe some sort of high gas plastic bullet shaped object loading that can cycle a rifle without adapter seems reasonable

      Goddamn.
      Thats horrible.

Going off what I know, the Chinese classically used 2 5.8mm cartridges.
One the DPB87 that was lighter and designed for rifles. And the DPB88, that was heavier in bullet weight and longer and designed for MGs, but could be used in a rifle in a pinch to so-so utility.
Nowadays, the Chinese are using the DBP191 cartridge in these new rifles. I can't find a ton of info about it right now, and it seems that neither can the Chinese themselves online. And otherwise mainly its designed to shoot DBP10. Which is basically a unified cartridge designed to meet in the middle between the DPB87 and DPB88.

If we assume that these guys are training using old stock ammo. And that these new guns are chambered for the DPB191 cartridge. And it uses a significantly different twist rate than older 5.8 cartridges like DBP87/DBP88, that could explain it.

      https://www.toutiao.com/article/6878704117510832654/?wid=1659222012034
I'm basing a lot of what I'm saying off of this article.
That gives a general overview of what changed between the cartridges, including significant changes to bullet design and rifling.
Enough that I do feel generally confident that its a mismatch of old ammo with new guns.

The most generous benefit of the doubt I could give them is that these are some sort of test batch rifles, like an early XM sorta thing, and they are just testing the function of the rifle because they are still testing barrel twist rates/coatings/linings whatever. Thus they'd save money and time by not putting in the rifling as they are just testing the mechanical function of the gas system/moving bits etc.

      On the other hand
lmao holy shit, if the above is true... why would you show it in this state vs a rifle that actually WORKED properly

        Anonymous

I struggle to believe that because they're showing soldiers doing maneuvers and shit. You don't need military dudes doing drills with a rifle to know if it shoots straight, you'd lock it in a vice on a bench and do actual testing.

        Anonymous

Fricking moronic, you'd really assume they're training with some kind of experimental bullshit gun rather than perhaps, with lightweight training ammo that is deliberately unstable to reduce the lethal range and damage done to backstops?

          Anonymous

How is that better than just giving frangible ammo or even rubber rounds if they are that concerned

I think i'd rather take my chances with the frangible bullet or rubber bullet as opposed to everyone's shots keyholing all over kingdom come. And i am noting you ignored the frangible or even wax rounds, which I am going to presume China is capable of making

                Anonymous

I'm not here to argue or go tit for tat. I don't have to explain their reasoning. I'm just telling you that they are training rounds. They're not shooting full charge loads into a shitty backstop with who knows what behind it.

          Anonymous

What the frick is the point of target training with unstable, inaccurate rounds that aren't even going to feel the same to shoot?

            Anonymous

Cheaper, same manual of arms, still shows where you're aiming, and you don't have to worry as much about the backstop and what's behind it.

              Anonymous

Except it doesn't because your pattern is literally random? If you're that worried about your backstop it's really not even advisable to be shooting at that point.

A tumbling bullet is more prone to ricochet back at you, your buddies or other bystanders in a close environment. So you can imagine the danger of showering the room with one as you breach.

        Anonymous

The trade offs aren't worth it. You don't actually gain any lethality, if at all, and you're strapped with an inaccurate uncontrollable piece of shit with minimal effective range and no chance against any type of armor or barrier. If just blowing the shit out of everything within 20 yards is all you care about and accuracy and penetration and control and shit doesn't matter you'd unironically be better off just using shotguns. At least then if you theoretically did need to reach out to a slightly longer distance you could load in a few slugs and get that job done too, and you could get some good penetration out of that. You could also load them with cheap bird shot for drills and not have to be embarrassed when pissed off video editors you hired but didn't pay to make your propaganda show your targets full of keyholes.

        Anonymous

Yes, but it's very doubtful they designed their guns to keyhole for obvious reasons. It's just training ammo.

How the frick does it even get that bad? Smoothbore with no rifling made? Even a worn down barrel would at least put some spin.

      Anonymous

Giving them the benefit of the doubt and they're not using smoothbores, they may be using the incorrect weight ammo. 5.8 used to have 2 main variants, a light infantry one (DPB-87) and a heavier one for MGs and marksman's rifles (DPB-88). Then again they supposedly standardized on one universal load back in 2010 but it could be possible they're using old ammo inventory for training. That or nobody cleans their rifles because IIRC 5.8 is still corrosive

      That’s what keyholing is

      Anonymous

If your bullets are too small to engage the rifling, or there isn't functional rifling then the bullets won't spin stabilize as intended. They'll flip end over end inaccurately and leave holes like that.

      Anonymous

Bullets spin all over the damn place when fired, the point of rifling is to get them stabilized to where their ballistics are as pinpoint as can be. Its one of the reasons why the minie ball muskets were so devastating for their time, not that musket rifling wasn’t a thing before but the shape of the minie and the rifling pretty much paved the way for modern bullets as we know them. Back on topic, If something is keyholing that badly at such a close range then there is something seriously fricked with the rifle.

      https://i.imgur.com/pHzaaRb.jpg

it's pretty easy to hit a target at that distance, so i would put the blame on the manufactoring tbh,

      Anonymous

That's obviously true for cheap exported bullshit, because why would they care about the quality of cheap exported bullshit? The entire point is to flood foreign markets with the cheapest possible shit and sell on volume. But, rationally, you'd think that they'd take more care in producing shit that they intend to use for themselves domestically.

(interestingly, Japan used to be the cheap bullshit manufacturing country but they took enough pride in their work to find ways to make the cheap bullshit better while still being cheap and it made them an economic and manufacturing powerhouse within a generation.)

Chinese all frick each other over. It's literally part of their mercantile culture. There's a popular Chinese phrase that roughly translates to "if you get fricked over on a deal, it was your fault". It wouldn't surprise me at all if the company that made the barrels used absolute shit steel with corners cut in manufacturing in order to get the most money possible out of the contract.

          Anonymous

I think it's likely the training ammo they were using. If you honestly believe a fully industrialized country of over a billion people, a country fully capable of making every iPhone ever, isn't capable of making a gunbarrel, then you are a moron and you bought the propaganda.

            Anonymous

Are you sure YOU aren't bought into the propaganda? The argument isn't even that they aren't capable of producing a good rifle, it's that from all the evidence we've seen they haven't. Even their own state propaganda that's supposed to make it look as good as possible shows it keyholing. If they simply didn't include the shots of the target we never would have seen that, but it goes to show that even their editors aren't putting in a good effort to make this thing work.

              Anonymous

Isn't the propaganda video more for the all-female SWAT team than the guns?
It'd still be unsurprising if the gun is a total piece of shit thanks to corruption and kickbacks, but I don't think the priority in this video is on making the gun look good.

            Anonymous

Oh, they're capable of making a barrel. They're also capable of almost maliciously fricking it up because the guys supplying certain parts can get away with it. The company contracted to make the barrel doesn't give a frick about the strength of the military. They only care about how much money they can get from the fancy military contract. China's not at war, so it's not an existential threat to a manufacturer if the guns they make are terminally flawed.
