Bradly SHORAD by BAE

A new Bradley Linebacker configuration has been proposed by BAE.
Sneed it for feed it?

>Let’s review the changes. Or the changes beyond the regular M2A4 set. The gun has been switched out from the 25x137mm M242 Bushmaster cannon to the 30x113mm M230LF cannon. This provides an airburst fuse option. There are plenty of airburst-capable 30mm rounds, but none in the 25mm caliber. At least not for autocannons.
>The quadpack Stinger launcher has returned. Other options available include a twin AGM-114 Hellfire launcher or a twin AIM-9X launcher. And yes, the AGM-114 can be used in an antiair role; it’s simply a matter of pointing the laser or radar guidance at the airborne target. The twin AGM-114 launcher can be seen at the right of the second photo.

    >We can also see that this vehicle now has its own radar. These are the four round drums on the corners of the turret. This new Bradley will be able to acquire aerial targets on its own. The radars are configured to handle both search and fire control duties. In addition, the new Linebacker 2 can be connected into an air defense network for target cueing.
    >Finally, we can see a really tall new array of stuff mounted on top of the turret. This is the British Anti UAV Defense System (AUDS). It combines an additional radar optimized for detecting very small targets, an electro-optical system for observation and identification of said targets, and a directional RF jammer for downing UAVs. Additionally, the 30mm airburst rounds should also be very effective against drones.

30mm is the practical minimum for proximity fuses

I guess the follow-up to this is if you would be able to stuff enough of anything into, say 12.7 or 50 to make air burst worth it, even if it could be programed.

              those are the same measurement

nobody's going lower than 25mm for that sort of thing, and the 25mm in the xm-25 was considered a little anemic for reliable anti-infantry work

You are the actual retard. Proximity means it detonated when it gets within a certain proximity of the target. You are describing airburst rounds set to detonate at a certain range
              > A micro-transmitter in the proximity fuse within the shell uses the shell's body as an antenna and emits a continuous radio wave. As the shell approaches a reflecting object, the wave bouncing back triggers the detonation when it signals having reached an optimal distance from the target.

Given the program for a Bradley replacement is in the stage where the US Army organizes the requirements for the program, the Bradley will be around by 2035 at the earliest.

The US Army hasn't replaced the Humvee at all, only the armored humvee versions. The regular unarmored humvee is being used and issued in the same way it was meant to be in the 1980s.

APCs only served alongside tanks in US mech divisions up until the 80s, when the brad replaced them
so armored brigades now use mixtures of IFVs and MBTs
the APC still exists, but as the 8x8 stryker, which is used as a standalone unit rather than as support for armor
in an armored division, the strykers are used as infantry who are fast enough to keep up while the M2 bradleys are the ones who support the MBTs

I think the problem is what if the enemy has the same bright idea, but decides to do it with IFV's operating with their tanks instead of APCs? Sure he has fewer infantry dismounts, but he also has a lot more armored vehicles that don't have to immediately flee or bail upon seeing an AFV.

The gun is likely to be dedicated to anti UAS. I think the Stryker variant MShorad already solves the issue BAE is looking at. If it’s a problem of armor to get AA assets closer to the front then just plop the already developed turret from the Stryker into the AMPV.

It's a drone-swatter. Against anything large, you'd be using missiles. That said, I'm a little surprised that APKWS2 isn't listed an an option for anti-drone.

Longer-term, of course, laser cannons will take over as the primary short-range AA weapon.

Rheinmetall had to go down a notch in order to lighten the turret and make room for AA missiles. The 35 mm version only comes with a gun.
The 30 mm version lobs the same 152 tungsten pellets, though at a range 1 km shorter.

Rotary cannons and revolver cannons are fine for being used occasionally - on a mission, shoot then return to base for a full strip and clean. They are dogshit for something that has to sit in the field and be used reguarly and intermittently.

I'm not very impressed by this weird Bradley conversation but shooting down every drone with a SLAMRAAM is pretty unfeasible.

      Anonymous

First of all AMRAAM missiles are quite a bit more expensive than Stingers or Sidewinders and that thing isn't exactly capable shooting missiles within seconds of stopping. You know it has separate launch units, radars and command posts. It is area defense missile system. Also SLAMRAAM isn't really a thing. That program was cancelled. US military purchased relatively small number of NASAMS as stopgap before SLAMRAAM proper was axed more than decade ago, which makes it even funnier for all the wrong reasons. NASAMS in US service is used to protect select high value targets like Washington DC and where ever president visits and they don't want to have constant combat air patrol going on in area. For US military is cheaper and more mobile alternative to Patriot. NASAMS uses almost entirely US made hardware, missiles and radar, but system integration and software is Norwegian. Only thing that survived the cancellation SLAMRAAM is light weight high mobility launch unit based on humvee.

We have seen how cheap drone based intelligence has drastically changed the game in Ukraine. A cheap way to deal with the threat (30mm chain gun) is vital to ensure maneuver company's and actually maneuver. Also the drone name snuff porn is not something I wish to see happen to actual humans.
