Boots

I want to buy boots for going innawoods hiking and larping and for general outdoor use, both normal ones and winter ones but normal are priority.

I'm looking at danner rats, I found them between 60 and 90euros
Are they good and are there any better options?
For winter ones I've seen belleville goretex ones but I'm ignorant about winter boots

if you're serious about it, find an outdoors or boot specific store and go there and try a bunch on, and read the reviews for the ones you like. I wear trail runners personally so I don't have any specific recommendations. Also invest in some good fricking socks, they will make a big difference no matter what boot or shoe you get.

I have merino wool socks from Danish endurance, I've even went running in boots with them and they were comfortable and weren't even wet, and I ram in wet grass after rain too and the boots were wet, plus they never stink

Don't waste your money. Get the cheapest running shoes you can find in a size large enough to go over thick wool socks. Wear them with yaktrax for traction. The result is superior in every way, lighter, and cheaper than any tactical boots. For waterproofing wear bread bags over your socks (you'll get sweaty eventually but goretex isn't any better and is the scam of the century). If you're worried about snakes you can wrap literally anything around your ankles, the old timers literally warded off snakes with wool puttees.

But why do soldiers use tac boots then?

Because they need to tuck their pants into them because they haven't discovered using sections of pantyhose to gather the pant cuffs.

In a tactical situation pants go over boots to prevent shit like acid from dripping into your boots

So the consensus on tac boots is negative? Why?
      What's their use case then?

        Anonymous

Tactical boots are great if you're dealing with uneven terrain and shit getting into the boot due to the high cut. Most tactical boots nowadays are made with a Goretex liner so your feet can breathe a bit with them on. Any boot made from leather can easily be made waterproof/water-resistant through polish or sno-seal in the case of roughouts. Additionally, tactical boots usually have an extremely tough shank so you'll never have to worry about your feet getting stabbed by a sharp stump or some asiatic's pit trap. In my opinion, high cut boots are situational for PrepHole purposes, and it doesn't really matter what you wear as long as you're not stupid. What matters is that you change your fricking socks, so moisture doesn't build up to give you blisters.

But why do soldiers use tac boots then?

I do know that shoe care used to be a big cultural thing in the army and marines, so they are probably still using high cut boots as a sort of legacy type thing since they don't have the financial backing now to research any alternative solutions. Though any PrepHolegay is welcome to correct me on that if Natick (or some other military research lab) considered anything else when the US switched from black leather to roughout. This guy

Because they need to tuck their pants into them because they haven't discovered using sections of pantyhose to gather the pant cuffs.

is a fricking moron because even now a good portion of the army and marines still blouses their trousers.

          Anonymous

Yes Marines still blouse trousers with the exception of Raiders but they really don't have to follow any rules so they wear better boots anyways.
Also with the thing about gortex and water-proofing your footwear: bad fricking idea. You want water to drain well from the boot on movement, not get trapped in with your foot. Drying your feet and changing socks, as well as trying not to get your feet wet at all is the move. Gortex is really good for insulating your feet when it's cold though. So if you're hiking through snow then invest in boots with some kind of thermal liner. But also if your feet get unbearably cold it may be an issue with your blood circulation which is a whole different topic.

            Anonymous

Never get insulated boots, just buy uninsulated boots large enough to fit over as many socks you need so you can rotate them out and wash them.

I used the McRae repros for about 3 years before the sole became slick as a house slipper, brush and oil them once every few months and they will handle just about anything, after breaking in they will always fit your foot too.

Avoid the Danner RATS. They are an awful boot. When I saw awful I mean FRICKING TERRIBLE. The only thing they're good for is standing still, anything other than that and you're in for a shit time. Throw in steel-toe and your feet are going to be fricked after about half a mile of normal walking, even if you somehow manage to break them in. I am not exaggerating. I was issued these thinking they looked nice and shit and hated life as long as I wore them.
              Danner Reckonings are cool though.

What part sucked for you? I have a pair without the steel toe, I had a friend who was issued them and said they did their job fine, but they run slim so I got a wide in my normal size and they fit pretty well. I've probably done about 15 miles on trails, 5 or so hunting innawoods, and a good few 5 miles walks along the road and I havent had felt any outstanding issues. Definitely a couple miles in the rain to get them shaped well but afterwards I had no complaints, though I have had some shit boots and walked them to death so I'm not too picky

Because they haven't discovered using nylon strips to blouse the trousers under the knee where it actually helps with mobility.

The military is so far behind me they're not even using suspenders. I carry 18 pounds of gear, weapons and ammo as a basic daytrip outfit and can bushwhack all day through the most technical terrain in North America like that without the slightest bit of discomfort.

For the love of God do not wear these shitty boots, or any approved USMC boots for that matter. They're slowly giving me and my boys horrible back pain and sadness. With the Danner Reckonings being the exception. Those are alright.
If you want to wear tactical, long lasting, any terrain, any weather boots the brands I suggest are Merrell, Salomon, Goruck or Altra. There's more but I've only got experience with those.
If you want lifelong health benefits that exceed beyond comfort and physical wellness, take the barefoot pill. That's a whole different world of footwear. Pic rel

Wash your laces once a month. Apply Pecard or similar wax when they start drying out or looking too scuffed up. Dry them out fully if they get wet.

What about general dirt and scuff marks? Need to be wiped down or don’t make a difference other than appearance?

Number one would be buying boots that can be resoled. Keep them clean, air them out after wearing them and ideally switch between two pairs. This is particularly important when using leather lined boots so the leather can fully dry out. DO NOT store them next to some kind heater or radiator.

ive only heard major b***hing and complaining about the usmc rats. i dont know if thats because theyre terrible or if it's 100% zoomers with baby boy infant feet crying about ouchies. personally, i wouldn't take a chance. rats being as cheap and abundant as they are leads me to suspect they might really be awful. don't be afraid to buy uncomfortable boots though - anything will become comfortable if you wear it for long enough.

look at civillian hiking/tramping boots. typically a bit more expensive but far superior. reason being the civillian market globally is far far larger than military procurement and isn't bound by the requirements of regimentality. so they iterate and innovate at a march higher rate due to the size of this market.

I'll post what I have and tell you what I think.
These are the Strikerbolts. I wear them pretty often outside of work. I've ran in them. Worked out at the gym in them. Never had any blisters or other issues. Very comfy. I wish they had used hooks for the upper lacing so they'd be easier to get on, but there's also a side zip version. Just not my thing.

I ordered these a few weeks ago. Been wanting them for about a year now and caught them 50% off, but on backorder. They'll ship next week. They're supposed to be good for hiking hilly, wet areas. I'll hike in them and they'll likely become my truck boots. I don't wear shoes anymore and when I do it's mostly fat skate shoes that I don't tie. I like to keep a pair of boots and a couple pair of wool socks with me at all times.

Might as well throw in my hunting boots, too. The Sharptails are hands down the most comfortable boots I've ever put on.
I also picked up a pair of the Steelyards for like 90 bucks on sale. They're more of a work boot and pretty heavy.
Also I highly suggest using waxed Kevlar laces. I've got them in the Strikerbolts and Sharptails and will probably replace the others.
