So I'm getting into body armor, and I have a lot of questions
>What kinds of plate features most?
>What should I focus on when buying a plate?
>What makes a really really good plate over a bad plate?
I already know to avoid plates like AR500, and that ceramics are the way to go.
>inb4 just buy hesco
Id really like to learn a lot more before I just buy the first thing people recommend me.
Frick off coomposter

Cheat rings are something to watch out for. It lowers the surface area that can actually protect you. RMA has problems with this.
What are cheat rings?
Like a foam buffer around the side that protects it when it drops, its "cheating" the NIJ drop and roll test.
I see.
Old news.
RMA fixed this in their 1155's.
reddit meme spouting moron who doesn't actually own these, tries to shit on them to justify his hesco purchase
he's a fricktard, he's never touched an RMA in his life
5 seconds in google debunks what he just said
RMA is GTG
I don't own a hesco, and RMA still has cheat buffers (the 1199). They aren't necessarily a bad thing just something to consider. I personally use hardwire plates.
my bad 1189
Google debunks this, the original generation of 1189 has those.
To say all of RMA is bad as a generalization is ignorant. This is the best you can get for the price point simple as
I'm sorry but you are getting way to defensive about your purchase here. Maybe an RMA employee is visiting our thread :^)
>To say all of RMA is bad as a generalization is ignorant.
I never said that, I just said that cheat rings are a consideration. I don't honestly think that cheat rings are even all that terrible so long as they don't take up a huge amount of the strike face. The main people I would cite as having the worst cheat rings are shotstop.
Like I said, the cheat rings you're talking about was only on the gen 1 version of the 1189s.
You are implying all RMA has these.
They don't - ask me how I know you got your information spoonfed from redditors.
>calling someone hating on rma a redditor
>when rma actively shills on reddit
>when rma actively loved by reddit
>when rma actively advertises on reddit
shorta07, please leave. No one wants your creepy boomer ass here.
You're a fricking idiot, and reposting anime pictures with newbie filenames
You don't know shit about RMA so why the frick did you bother posting to begin with?
Frick off already, moron.
>calls me a newbie
>can't even reply correctly
>angry that he has bottom of the barrel plates
>angry that someone barely mentioned RMA as an example of cheat buffers
>angry at me just trying to teach a new guy what to avoid
also
>>I fricking hope you're tugging on my sack
who the frick talks like this? sounds a bit like a certain someone from RMA honestly. Maybe you should go back to trying to sue ARFCOM again.
Make sure the plates you buy are NIJ certified NOT JUST NIJ TESTED the difference between the 2 are NIJ certified made plates are tested at random points and timea and NIJ tested are a singular set of plates tested to the standard
ok that makes sense. Is an NIJ tested plate still likely to work?
Are you ok with that dice roll?
Maybe as backup plates. My current plan is to buy a set of higher end plates, and then 2-3 sets of lower end plates to seal up into my basement. I will heat shrink them and put desiccant packets for long term keeping.
>>What kinds of plate features most?
what the frick does that even mean?
decide if you want 3 or 4, if you can afford the best level 4 plates they weigh about the same as decent 3's but its alot to pay if your larping (pro tip, we all are)
shooters cut is nice, if your not in great shape do you really wanna carry level 4 plates that one time you gotta run down the street ?
side plates are sweet, so is a good gortee around your neck and pits and balls.......if your gonna be assulting a house or riding in a truck
but if i had to hike up a hill frick that.
weight vs protection vs your health.
whats your budget? do you need to float?
Don't really need to float, was more interested in armor for area/urban protection stuff. Would probably use a chest rig for hiking/long distance type deal. I use an old lbt rig for that.
>budget
I can spend some money on this stuff but I prefer things that are good bang for my buck.
id suggest levl 3 plates, id suggest something light
https://bulletproofzone.com/collections/ballistic-plates-and-armor-inserts/products/level-4-armor-level-iii-silicon-carbide-uhmwpe-armor-plate
this is super light and if you survive 4 hits you are my hero anyhow
I fricking hope you're tugging on my sack with that "unbranded body armor" shit Black person. This isn't store brand cheerios vs the real deal.
no im just saying light is the way to go....not that particular brand
Oh wow that is pretty lightweight. Does the type of ceramic matter? Does it cause it to be more/less lightweight?
OP here, honestly just stop posting. Maybe try reddit, it might be more your speed.
Yes, some ceramic materials are lighter and it's worthwhile to make the plate as much as 3-4 lbs lighter if you're moving constantly.
Frick you then, you're too incompetent to do your own research, and further too stupid to lurk before posting, while posting newbie filename anime pics and telling anyone but yourself and your buttbuddy to frick off back to redit?
You're clueless and helpless. Congratulations on being the biggest moron to ever post here.
Woah hes having a stroke at this stage.
A bit like that, certain ceramics are stronger. Because of this, they can use less ceramic, and thus you get a lighter plate. The general ceramics that get used often are:
>silica alumina (sometimes called aluminum oxide)
>silicon carbide (SIC)
>boron carbide

AR500
LTC or Tencate are the manufacturers to look for, LTC you can get via Hoplite. Tencate is a bit more spread out, but they show up in random places in other companies lineups. If you have soft armor behind it, newer (post-2013) surplus ESAPIs are as good as your liable to find, the most field-tested setup in modern times.
RMA is mostly anus, but they did one plate right: the 1092 and its Gen 2 follow on. 5lbs, Level III plus 855a1. Its exactly in line with LTCs 19513.
What people sell tencate plates?
I think a couple Velocity Systems plates are Tencate, I could well be wrong and they use some other OEM. Midwest Venture FM4 purports to be a tencate model, but there they goofed on the exact model.
Other than that, they show up. Between them and LTC, they are the last two BIG companies in armor left that are trustworthy.

/sgg/ has a whole section on really, really cheap NIJ certified level III rifle plates being sold by Sportsman's Guide, complete with catalog codes to get them for $40 a pop; granted it's 20+ year old Italian military surplus that was certed under the old 0101.03 standard, but at literally $40 a plate you can afford to roll the dice, since they're compressed PE and as long as they don't have more than superficial edge/face damage they're fine. Same kind of story for Sportsman's Guide's surplus Italian ceramic level IVs (long as they pass torque they're ok), which they're out of and probably will never get again. There's also Botach, which sells plates "diverted" from the PLA supply chain, so they're at least used by a major military, and Youtube testing shows them performing adequately against their rated threats.
You don't have to spend a lot for good body armor. Will it be gucci multicurve plates from a major DOD contractor? Hell no. Will it still protect you against what it's rated for, at a bargain price and at a fairly low weight? Yes.
