Common contaminant in waste water treatment facilities in europe. It’s pretty trivial to get your hands on the stuff and supposedly easy to cultivate too which makes it scary.

Yes, and eas-ish to give it resistance genes. It's difficult to concentrate spores in quantity without a high speed centrifuge though.

In the loosest term a bioweapon is just a weaponized germ/virus/organism that has been modified to be either more lethal or more contagious. Now whilst you'll get the regular answers like covid, anthrax, weaponized plague, there are far more subtle ways to cripple a nation using bioweapons, such as modifying a plant fungus to spread more rapidly or in the broadest sense importing an organism that can out-compete the locals and ruin the ecosystem.

      > such as modifying a plant fungus to spread more rapidly
Or any number of crop specific pests or diseases. There's a nightmare scenario where someone introduces pesticide resistant bugs to the US and kills all our corn fields.

This is one of the much more realistic scenarios just because it can't spread back to one's own population specifically and different countries have different dependence on different crops. A country that mostly used wheat would be relatively unaffected (at least by direct effect), unlike human targeted bioweapons. But it'd still be bad, it'd have a high chance of getting around to corn worldwide, which would affect enough different countries and things people love that it'd make the country that used it a target for military anyway. And it shares the common problem of terror/economic weapons which is that they aren't actually usually that militarily useful (or only on time scales long enough to make the outcome moot).

It's one of many nightmares when it comes to terrorism though by non-state actors and I'd love to see some serious money plowed into vertical farming for that reason as well as others.

Not much of a nightmare. We could finally get rid of the corn ethanol lobby and use real gasoline again.

If you want a real nightmare, imagine the Chinks dumping African swine fever all over Iowa. 100% mortality, no vaccine, no treatment, no stopping it.

I reckon that if we'll see bioweapons in action, it's gonna be in economic warfare

Bioweapons can be many things. Get hold of one guy with ebola and you can spread his sickness over an entire continent if you have the logistics. Or you can take a bag of blood from a HIV patient and infect an entire hospital's blood supply with it. It is a crappy weapon though. Either it won't spread at useful speed, or the patients die too fast. Or they don't die, more often than not. We have had terrorist attacks in the last couple of decades using ricin, which were very unsuccessful as a killing too but useful for creating fear.

There are two basic government takes on this. The libertarian approach is to let it spread; maybe some people will die but most will live and develop increased resistance. The totalitarian approach is to isolate everyone in the outbreak area, as happened in China and one case in New York iirc, and then treatment is second priority although given. We have never seen a true outbreak. Well that is not true, we had the Spanish Flue and we had the Bubonic Plage and a few rounds of typhoid and tuberculosis and even leprosy. But they were and are outbreaks related to a great degree the lower classes, who has worse healthcare and more malnutritions and are more vulnerable. In a modern scenario we can expect a western government to be rubbish at stopping the spread of anything since they don't want to make anything mandatory, but they are the only type of government that can come up with a cure. For other governments the most likely response will remain isolation.

Bio-weapons are tricky, since they lack control mechanisms that can be guaranteed. The main things I want from a weapon is ‘can I aim it with a degree of accuracy’ and ‘will it have the desired effect. As points out, a disease that kills the host too rapidly will likely fail to spread unless there is a long-term incubation period. Covid spread very fast, but had a low mortality rate so less than ideal for a weapon. Finally you will have to ensure your populations are immune to the weapon and that it will not mutate to overcome the antidote.

It’s a losing trick, the only person who could use such a weapon would be a bond Villain, but no nation state could effectively use one where far more effective methods of waging war exist.

This is why you use one that isn’t normally transmisible between humans such as anthrax. Anybody who breathes its spores will be serious burden on the healthcare system for a long time even if he lives in the end.

      Ebola is a terrible bio-weapon.
Sure, it's gruesome in how it kills but it requires close proximity to spread, it only kills in places where people are tended to at home by family or in hospitals with no isolation between patients and staff and other patients.

There's a reason the epidemics weren't pandemics, it's because it's only really contagious in the conditions in impoverished 3rd world hospitals.

If you were bleeding out of your eyes in New York, you'd be bagged by CDC in hazmat and thrown in an isolation ward real fricking fast and then they'd go put your contacts in containment too and that would be the end of it.

        >it's because it's only really contagious in the conditions in impoverished 3rd world hospitals.
Not even that, a lot of the spread is because moronic Africans insist on running their hands over the dead bodies of their dead loved ones because "traditional funeral stupidity".

Uncle Mbutu died of ebola?! Oh no, quick, kiss his corpse and throw yourself on top of him, and then go eat the funeral dinner with your bare hands!

          >a lot of the spread is because moronic Africans insist on running their hands over the dead bodies of their dead loved ones because "traditional funeral stupidity".
This. I remember reading an article during the 2014-2016 outbreak estimating 80% of cases were from either traditional burial practices (kissing the body, getting the extended family together to wash the body as a group, lying on top of the body to absorb their strength) or traditional healing practices (specifically their tradtion of having healers cut patients and rub herbs into the bloody wounds with their bare hands).

          Shit like
          http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/8/17/liberia-quarantinebreak.html
          >Officials fear Ebola may spread through the capital after residents of Liberia's largest slum raided a quarantine center for people with suspected infections, freeing patients before going on a looting spree and stealing items that included bloodstain sheets, blankets and mattresses.

          >“We don’t understand why they stole the blood sample. Perhaps they thought there was cash hidden in the flask,”
          Probably doesn't help.

        > What exactly are bioweapons?
Bioweapons are specifically weaponized biologic agents used against people, animals, or plants. The term "Bioweapons" sometimes include chemical or radioactive weapons as well.
Anthrax is one of the most well-known bioweapons. Anthrax is a type of bacteria that causes disease. The anthrax spores are able to be delivered in a number of different ways.

        > How are they used?
I'll use anthrax as an example: the spores can be made into a powder that is placed in areas that are like to have skin-to-skin contact such as an envelope They can also be aerosolized.
