>9/11 2: Electric Boogaloo happens and they actually hit all 5 sides of the Pentagon this time
Realistically speaking, how does this actually affect the US military, if it does at all? What role do the offices at the Pentagon itself actually play in keeping the military running on a day to day basis?

If they're just flying planes into the building then I imagine it wouldn't affect military operations to a noticeable extent. If you look at the pictures from 9/11, even a fully loaded jet won't knock out of entirety of each wedge.
    The building is pretty resilient
    https://ascelibrary.org/toc/jpcfev/19/3

Military bases etc run themselves day-to-day, it's not like losing the Pentagon means soldiers on the ground suddenly stop functioning like robots, and I imagine any truly essential operations at the Pentagon would have backups in Cheyenne Mountain or elsewhere.

It's hard to estimate how many casualties there'd be since the wedge that was hit on 9/11 was undergoing renovations at the time of the attack and only had 800 people working in it (vs the 4500 people that would've been at risk if the plane had struck any other side of the building.
You'd lose some amount of knowledge in the heads of everyone who died and there'd be some acute disruption (both from institutional panic as a result of such a high profile target being damaged and from the chaos of trying to find new workers, new offfices etc). How much exactly? No idea.

I unironically love seeing threads made about the building because I wonder what other people think the day to day is like

hurry up you are going to be late to work
but this, the loss of the main bureaucratic hub would not effect day to operations
But in a few months of fighting you might notice that some stuff isn't being procured and running out
But it will be the boring civilian stuff first

Based on what I've heard from an E-7 who used to work there: a lot of full-bird colonels and general officers who do jobs that seem way below their pay grade (at least during peacetime)

Nothing. The Pentagon just contains all the Military's political bureaucracy. All the actual command structure is done in bunkers in Colorado.

Why did they even attack the pentagon instead of the White House or Capitol?

I'm sure it had nothing to do with Donald Rumsfeld's announcement on 9/10 of the $1 trillion dollar deficit that was handled in the accounting section that got hit.

They were trying to hit the White House/Capitol anon, UA93 was trying to go there when the passengers attempted to retake the wienerpit.

How are you going to hit two buildings with a single airplane?

          Anonymous

I said white house/capitol since I don't have the source on me that states which one in particular they were going for. But it's known, from later investigations, that they were going to DC and were going to hit one of the two.

          Alternatively, by Israeli space magic.

The point is that they could have struck both with two planes instead of ramming one into a flat building with concentric walls built during WW2.
