So it getting crazier and crazier out there. So I hear pistols tend to jam along with pump action shotguns. Also that all these high tech weapons (AR15's) weapons will be impossible to fix yourself. Are these thoughts true?

All guns use similar basic principles. There are no "complex" guns, not common ones anyways, An AR15 is actually one of the more simple ones and the parts are built to withstand way more rounds through it than most guns.

Pump shot guns never jam. The entire manual pump mechanism is designed to clear the breach. It's semi auto shot guns that jam or any semi auto gun that would be more prone to a jam

        Anonymous

In theory you want to use whatever is widely used where you live so in a SHTF scenario you have access to ammo and parts.
AR style rifles are more popular for a reason and part of that is due to the much wider array of aftermarket parts.
At some point you will want to kit your gun out with optics, flashlight, IR, maybe a fore grip, and suppressor.
ARs are just as reliable, more readily available, easier to get both ammo and parts for, and most likely what your buddies will be running.
Having an AK or any other platform isn’t a bad thing but I think if you live in North America you should opt for an AR type rifle or at least something in .556 first then you can start playing with other stuff.
My state is gay as frick and banned AR platforms so I’m looking to get a Sig MCX instead. That or I’m just going to move.

The biggest issue with pistols and magnums is the recoil. You need to practice with it in order to shoot accurately. On the other hand, rifles like the AR-15 have much less recoil and are easier to aim with

      Caucasian Crusader

I would add that; unless you've ever been in a life and death situation; your me scared as hell; so simple designs....as for AR15; doesn't it have specialist parts... that would be impossible to machine tool yourself?

        Anonymous

No and the parts are all pretty simple and mass manufactured. They also easy to replace, but if you're have to replace anything that isn't a spring then you have bigger problems. AR-15s are extremely tough, that's a big part of why the military uses them.
And yes, they are surprisingly simple to people who aren't familiar with them. Easy to clean too, with no tools required for breaking them down. You can do literally 99% of maintenance with cotton swabs, a bore snake, and some WD-40.

          Anonymous

          >WD-40
          >on guns
          You absolute fricking idiot
          Never use WD-40 on a gun, I recommend G-96
WD-40 will leave the surface bare and promote rust; CLP/G-96/etc leaves a protective film that inhibits rust.

            Anonymous

Yeah WD-40 is okay as a solvent to clean with but it dries up. It's best to use a CLP. I personally don't like WD-40 anyway because of the smell. I've switched to all natural cleaners. Grizzly grease CLP is one of them. Mineral oil another for long term storage. I also like shooterlube dot com line of products. Their solvent isn't smelly.

I use kerosene to degrease and clean, pure teflon to lubricate contact points like rails and the barrel and on the ouside a light coat of corrosion X. I dunno if you can get these where you live but it's very good stuff and cheap af.

            Anonymous

WD 40 is good if you're using corrosive ammo and you want to displace leftover water in the barrel after you flush it out. Or if a bunch of dust blows in the frame ans you use hot water to flush the shit out and then WD40 it

              Anonymous

If you're shooting corrosive ammo just hose it down with dish soap and water or use kerosene like I do. WD40 is literally mineral oil + kerosene.

Modern weapons are not extremely difficult to produce, the most difficult component to manufacture is the rifled barrel, exclusively because of the rifling. There are many ways to rifle a barrel- the easiest being a rifling button. You can create a rifling button from a tungsten carbide tool head or from high carbon steel. the difficult is that if not properly engineered it cn crack or if too short it can turn on its side while being pushed through ruining the barrel. 410 steel is the barrel material usually- it's possible to buy that with a hole through the center that just need to be reamed to spec. the only other part that need the same strength of steel is the rear case support(the locking lugs and case holder) and the firing pin. the rest can be made out of whatever material you feel is sturdy enough. spring making is well studied and widely available. measurements and characteristics of the components are readily available.

          Anonymous

You can buy a rifling button from China on ali express for 20 bucks and if that's illegal where you live you can cut the rifling by using electrochemical machining. All you need is a cheap 3d printer, copper wire, a hydraulic pipe, a bucket with salt water and a battery.

Pistols won't jam unless you use shit tier ammo or don't maintain it. Pump shotguns are one of the most reliable weapons there are and ARs aren't high tech weapons at all anything in an AR is replaceable and all you need to service it is a set of screwdrivers, a small hammer and a few punches.

Wrong. A malnourished child-soldier in an African warlord army can handle the recoil from any weapon. The thing that makes long guns easier the shoot is that they have a better sight radius and the relation between the trigger weight and the weight of the gun is larger so trigger control mishaps won't affect the shot as much

          scenario 1:
          >miss twice
          >too nervous/shaky to reload
          >oops, now i'm fricked

          scenario 2:
          >dont want to waste a shot because then i only have one left
          >hestitate
          >oops, now im fricked

for castle defense you want capacity and stopping power. you don't want to hesitate for fear of wasting a round, and you definitely don't want to run out.

semi-auto pistol, semi-auto rifle, or semi-auto carbine are what you want.

more important than weapon choice is practice though. you should know how to load/unload/clear jams/aim/etc. just with muscle memory, because panic overrides critical thinking skills.

i use a 9mm carbine because of reduced risk of over-penetration, cheap rounds for lots of practice, and more than enough power to drop any human threat when loaded with hollow-points.

if you're already at shotgun range, then you better hope your shotgun works or you're really practiced at drawing your revolver. switching weapons in a scenario like this takes a lot of thinking, so if you're already worried about panic then this is not a good plan.

also the kar98 is really overrated, mostly because of ww2 games and nostalgia. it's an ancient design with expensive ammo you'll never be able to find.

if you're doing long-distance then you want a hunting caliber like .308, 6.5 creedmoor, 30-06, etc. you're doing yourself no favors using an old gun with uncommon and expensive ammo. a scoped .223/5.56 rifle like an AR would work well too, as long as you're not planning on taking out deer or bears.

also modern AR's are basically as reliable as any old AK these days. a lot of them beat AK's in the good old mud test.

Build a poverty pony or any other basic lower and put an AR stoner A1 front post upper on it with an MBUS rear flip sight. Or buy a complete lower. You will save hundreds on a name brand retail rifle and you can use the savings to buy ammo to train with.

Bear Creek arsenal makes the AR stoner brand by contract for Midway USA and because of that they tend to be a higher quality than the ones they sell on their website. They consistently out perform other budget brands like PSA. Especially in accuracy. I've "built" several for budget conscious friends and they all have shot almost or even under MOA with no non operator induced malfunctions.

          https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1016872351?pid=221905.
          Complete upper $400

          https://www.midwayusa.com/product/2319289991?pid=785494
          Rear flip sight $55
That's the whole gun sans a stripped lower. Go to your local gun store and get literally any basic b***h one they have. They should be about $65 add maybe $15 for your 4473

That's $620-635 for a fully functional rifle. Get not less than 4 regular ass normal 30 round magazines about $15 a piece and enough m855 to load them all at least twice. Then get the cheapest brass cased range ammo you can and get your meme flag using ass to the range.

If you only can get one weapon get a God damn rifle. AR's are the best all around for the states for the money.

.380, 9mm, .38 and .357 all shoot the same size bullet (give or take a few grains depending on ammo choice)
.380 and .38 are weaker (200-300ft-lbs)but have smaller guns
9mm+P and .357mag are very stronger (400-500ft-lbs) but require heavier/larger guns
revolvers don't jam because you can't limp wrist them but slide guns will failure to feed if you don't hold it firm which might not cross your mind if you're being attacked

everything can jam/malfunction. this is more related to make/model of the gun and choice of ammo than anything you can blanket say about entire categories.

semi-auto pistols have the advantages of better recoil, customization, ammo choice, and capacity. revolvers have the advantage of being very simple and easy to clean, and a misfire won't effect the then time you pull the trigger.

pump actions are actually great because of just how easy it is to clear a jam if it gets dirty: pump harder.

ar-15's are not exactly "high tech" weapons, just very cheap because the patent expired and every company can make them. they've been around over 50 years now, and you're more likely to find cheap spare/replacement parts for them than any other rifle. glocks are similar with their huge aftermarket.

Why does everyone promote this piece of dogshit? Easy to break extractor leaf spring, shitty shell door that snags gloves, heavy like a tank. The Mossberg 500/590 is the only pump that passed military testing, but it never gets any love.

The 870 Express is suitable but I have an 80's Era 870 magnum that has served me well. That being said, good 870 parts are surprisingly hard to find, and there's no reason to buy a new 870 over a Mossberg 500/590... if they're finally back in stocks that is. A year ago the only Mossbergs in stocks was the 88.

In the case of the AR-15, it is true. If you break a firing pin, bolt, trigger, barrel, etc... you can for the most part replace it with parts from someone else's guns. Provided you have a few basic tools like a wrench and pins.

Sad af. I know that there are some indigenous communities in Taiwan that make their own guns to hunt but even them must be persecuted

I like the plus P rounds too, but take it from an actual gunsmith. You are losing a shit ton of that velocity out of that short semi-auto barrel and there goes your energy. Published velocities are NEVER as high as real velocities and you'd have to shoot out of an eight inch barrel to get even close to published stats of the plus P rounds. Revolvers get you there faster with barrel length alone and the longer sighting radius gives you better accuracy.

I used to shoot +p+ 124gr 9mm but I quickly noticed that the muzzle flash was too big and figured out it was due to unburnt powder. I'm using a brazilian made (magtech) ammo and I got to chronograph it and it's just 30 fps lower than advertised on avg. I also noticed that American made ammo usually performed poorly and the advertised velocities were almost always wrong.

                Anonymous

That's right. That's exactly what it is. Unburned powder. Even the fastest burning powder on the market will not burn completely even in a rifle so in a handgun you have a lot of unburned powder. Published velocities are from special barrels at the factory that are super tight and long. There's an old formula we use to adjust for it but I don't remember it off the top of my head. It's pretty significant of a difference. In pistols it can be a hundred to two hundred feet per second difference, usually it's around 40 to 100 though.

in an apocalyptic life/death situation i would take a .22 for one reason: i can carry thousands of rounds in my bag vs. maybe a few hundred of anything else.

.22 is small, and there's the definite possibility that one shot will not immediately stop a threat, but it's definitely a lot better than nothing.

for the most part you would probably be using it to hunt small game like rabbit/squirrels/etc. anyway. you could drop a deer with a well-placed shot as well.

my choice of apocalypse weapon and castle defense weapon would not be the same.

.22LR is the most common caliber so i would stick to that. .22short is becoming less common and actually more expensive than LR these days. hollow points recommended for small game hunting and defense.

Revolvers also have an advantage in that as long as you don't need to reload, you aren't ejecting spent casings everywhere. Revolvers are quite reliable as long as the gun hasn't been abused by flicking the cylinder home, bending the crane and pall (hand)

Nope. The best is a Glock 19, AR-15, Remington shotgun. All are easy to fiel strip, and can be repaired with a pin puncher. They're also all crazy reliable as long as you clean them, which is super easy. The only gun I own that's ever malfunctioned is my .22 that doesn't like CCI Stingers.

I think a lot of people get hung up over collecting them pointlessly. It's one thing if your making your own reloads or getting money from recycling. Otherwise it's isn't a problem. As for as evidence is concerned, if the use of force is justifiable then it's a non issue. And the cop are going to know who was shot with what anyways.
And yes, Glocks are crazy reliable. You have to seriously neglect them for them to start malfunctioning. The only malfunction I've personally seen was from a cop who literally never cleaned or cared for his because it was department issued. His magazine spring was worn out, so it wasn't feeding right or locking open on empty. Replacing the magazine brought it back to 100% reliability. And again, that some serious neglect to let the magazine spring get that bad.

Then get good self defense education, learn the laws in your state, and get USCCA insurance. And remember the first rule is don't go in for a statement, and don't talk to cops. If the prosecutor is one of the shitlibs, leave them in the dark until it's time for Discovery. Then your lawyer can embarrass them so hard that the jury decides it hates cops more than you.

How does jamming a drone signal help? Sure, maybe they don't get a video feed and can't give the drone movement instructions, but it's not like this would make the drone fall out of the sky. Wouldn't you have to just keep the gun aimed at it until it runs out of batteries? If you stop jamming it, wouldn't they just regain control instantly?

    Let's talk bullet caliber.

You want a bullet with enough force to penetrate your target and stop. Too much force and you're wasting energy by having your bullet continue traveling through walls or people.

Ideally, when the bullet stops it has enough energy to frick up your target. One shot one kill.

Based on actual combat statistics there are two calibers that have a one shot 96% fight ending power. That's the .357 magnum and the .40.

9mm takes multiple shots to drop a target, and the .45 goes through the target and keeps going wasting energy.

You use hollow points in a carry gun. It's almost impossible for hollow points to travel through a human.
The tests (not) referenced are for ball ammo, which is only used for target shooting and by militaries.
Caliber is irrelevant between normal handgun and revolver cartridges so long as you're carrying hollow points and not FMJ like a moron.

uh no, the 357 uses a heavier bullet. Up to 180 grains at velocity 1050 fps for 441 foot pounds of energy, 9mm max average bullet 125 grains at 1150 for 381 foot pounds.

          Anonymous

I carry 9mm 147gr +p it's the standard FBI load and in terms of terminal ballistics it's comparable to standard pressure .357mag. If you're going to use .357 then use it with a carbine there's literally no better use for it since revolvers are obsolete as a matter of fact any pistol with less than 15rds is obsolete.

            Anonymous

I like the plus P rounds too, but take it from an actual gunsmith. You are losing a shit ton of that velocity out of that short semi-auto barrel and there goes your energy. Published velocities are NEVER as high as real velocities and you'd have to shoot out of an eight inch barrel to get even close to published stats of the plus P rounds. Revolvers get you there faster with barrel length alone and the longer sighting radius gives you better accuracy.

9mm can shoot 147g and both are commonly loaded to 450-500ft-lbs, its not the 1980's anymore plus most people aren't loaded their .357 with 180g, 158g is a lot more common

            Anonymous

An argument as old as time. Just carry what you are comfortable with. Personally, I'd rather have a .357 revolver in my pocket because you don't have to think about if you have a round ready or if the safety is on. You just pull and shoot.

      Anonymous

9mm and .357 are the same size bullet and often have the same muzzle energy

This is literally 80s tier misconceptions. A shotgun slug will go through the chest of any man and it won't make it less effective a .380 +p HP will almost never leave the body if it's a center mass hit and it's shit tier ammo. When were's talking low energy projectiles (aka any handgun round) There's no hydrostatic shock in play so only 2 factors are relevant to stop a threat and they are mechanical incapacitation like when you break the femur of your attacker or shatter his hipbone and sudden drop in blood pressure making him pass out. So the best ammo for self defense should always be the one largest diameter projectile you can shoot fast and accurately and for 99% of the people that will range between 9mm and 45acp. Contrary to what most people think hollow points aren't meant to dump the energy into the target they are meant to increase the chance of hitting a large blood vessel due to a larger surface area. If anything, linear momentum is a better metric for bullet effectiveness.

whats that have to do with my post proving 9mm and .357 are the same thing
        and don't (you)me with that 147g vs 158g because 11 grains ain't shit of a difference

If you're considering terminal ballistics then 147gr 9mm and 357mag will perform about the same I said that here

The reason I mentioned (you) is that ft/lbs or muzzle velocity is almost irrelevant when it comes to handgun performance in self defense scenarios.

    >i here pistoles tend to jam along with pump action shotguns
This is generally an ammunition or cleaning issue when using firearm choices that have been proven reliable over time. Low load pistol calibers, especially out of very short barrels like CC guns can have issues, and pump shotgun problems are usually user-induced with soft/short stroking or using the wrong shell sizes.
    >also that all these high tech weapons (AR15's) weapons will be impossible to fix yourself
PARTIALLY true. Small fixes are easy, but actual damage will take some machining or scavenging if you don't want to order. Thankfully all the parts in an AR or AK are super simple.

Choice really comes down to who is using it, your experience, how it'll be carried, and your local laws. There's reliable arms and ammo of every major type in a variety of calibers.

These are my current favorites for protection. G20 for bears when I’m at the cottage or or feral PCP nigs down home, and the M&P long slide for everything else in between. The G20 is expensive to shoot if you want to run anything remotely adequate through it, but it’s essentially an auto loader that holds more than twice the rounds but it’s stopping power is somewhere between a .357 mag and .44 when using the correct ammo.

Too much recoil. You're better off using a .40 or 357 mag. .44 is better with a longer barrel, less recoil but it will definitely kill a bear, or whatever is hunting you. I just wouldn't go for a .44sp for everyday carry.

That's why they want to ban them, they're stupid simple, high performance, highly reliable and CHEAP. Not like the fricky days of trying to accurize M14s and Mini 14s, or trying to make M1 carbines reliable. And it's not like shelling out $1500 or $2000 on an FN SCAR and ARX or Galil or something, they're fine with elites being able to afford the cadillac guns.

OP just get a Palmetto AR and one of their Dagger Glock clones if you don't want to spend the money, or get an Aero Precision AR and a S&W M&P 9mm or a CZ P-10, or a Beretta APX but finding holsters for it is impossible.

gas rings and ejector design are over complicated and there is no reason for that many locking lugs, it doesn't make it any stronger or lock and better then 4 lugs
over engineering is not good engineering

Nope, fully pneumatic design is golden.

          https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/why-does-the-ar-15-bolt-have-so-many-lugs.552470/

How about maximum load bearing surface with minimal bolt rotation i.e. 22.5˚? A two or three lug bolt design will offer the same/similar 50% bearing surface but will require 90˚ or 60˚ of bolt rotation respectively. I would imagine that the quicker the bolt can lock and unlock the better, particularly if the rifle is capable of fully automatic fire.

More lugs = less rotation to lock the bolt. That's why you see bolt guns with 2 lugs that have 90-degree bolt turns, and three lugs that have 60-degree bolt turns.

It's true, a revolver has a long service life and is very reliable. Also the calibers they generally come in are usually straight walled cased and so they are easy to reload and can take black powder and pure lead bullets. In the long run they will last a lot longer than semi-automatics. But they are a little hard to find in gun shops right now from the way I understand it. Most companies aren't producing them because they are expensive to make and most have been already bought up.

Eh, I used to carry a snub-nose .357. Honestly I don't recommend it. The recoil is pretty intense, and they are comically loud. They're cool guns, and I'd probably carry one if I lived in a safe area. But if you live in an area where there's a possibility you could get jumped by multiple nogs, then I'd go for a double stack with a spare mag. I prefer carrying a P365XL with a spare mag if I'm going to a dangerous area. Plenty of fire power for the average person. Glock 19 is also a good option.

  64. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Would you rather have 8 shots of .357 or 6 shots of .44? Leaning towards 8 shots of .357 magnum because it's still powerful and the majority of self defense cases are solved within 1 or 2 shots, some without even having to pull the trigger because the perp runs away.

      Anonymous

8 of .357. I love the .44 mag but 357 is good enough and more is better. Either way loading with hollow points is probably a good idea especially with the 357. Maximize damage and make use of the higher velocities of the 357 in that case.

.357 is the best handgun you can get. It hits harder than a 9 and can shoot two types of ammo so it's versatile as well.

Never had a C7 jam on me. Saw somebody's catch fire after dumping about 12 magazines at somebody. AR-15s supposedly finicky but I've never experienced it. I was always ready to clear a jam in an emergency and it's probably not a safe way if your at a gun range and you get a hangfire or something.

Mossburg 500 short barrel pistol grip if you live in an actual urban area, get one with a stock if you think you'll use it for hunting or shooting trap

I'm a self defense expert and let me tell you, the signal most effective weapon you can get, is the kubaton. It looks non threatening, is legal everywhere, and is highly highly effective.

You need to get various weapons. You need a sword on the wall and a baseball bat at you door. The gun you carry can be something simple like a 9mm or 45. You carry hand gun needs a hammer on it though, double action single action one that the barrel doesn't move. You'll then need an ar15 and any 12ga shotgun pump or auto it doesn't matter. You'll need to get a 2 shot derringer any cal above 25. You need a good knife maybe a switch blade and hell buy a set of brass knuckles. You need all this for various situations.

I'm a lanklet and all these guns are too small for me
like it's genuinely hard to get my finger around the trigger while holding the gun

If your hands are too big large rubbed pachmayr grips can really help, if your hands are too small wood grips shaved down and re-checkered make a huge difference. I have to shave down all my semi auto gun grips and re-checker but my revolver grips work fine for me because of the way revolvers are shaped smaller naturally.

For CC any reputable brands double action/single action 9mm/.40 cal. Keep it simple.

The best self defense gun is the one you keep on your body. I'd rather have a NAA mini revolver in my pocket than a .45 somewhere I can't reach it.
