Best caliber for armed light drone?
Requirements:
>reliable (you can't clear malfunctions in the air)
>armor piercing (at least enough for a helmet from few hundred feet altitude)
>lightweight (for both weapon and ammo)
>high capacity (can't reload in air)

I'm thinking the P90 would be a good off-the-shelf choice with some armor piercing 5.7mm. Small drones small arms would also be a great excuse to continue development of polymer cased ammo. The mag capacity is great. Bullpup so it's compact, and lightweight if you strip all the unnecessary human ergonomics crap off it.

Why don't Turks sell or gibs some of these beltfed ones to Ukies to try out? I foresee drones doing WW2 style gun runs on Russian trenches before this war's end. But more likely, they probably will be doing 360 headshots from a hundred feet up.

Can't pen helmet. No good, but it would be great for harassment.

So it's good enough considering the current drone-dropped grenades are only used as harassment 90% of the time. Do you think those shrapnels pen helmets or armor?

Fragments or .22s, either way, an answer is to use enough of them to get around the armor.

Damn it, I forgot to put "low recoil" as one of the requirements.

      >reliable (you can't clear malfunctions in the air)
      >armor piercing (at least enough for a helmet from few hundred feet altitude)
      >lightweight (for both weapon and ammo)
      >high capacity (can't reload in air)
      >low recoil (so you don't affect stability of the drone)

        You can't have it all.
You either make a small light drone armed with explosives, or you make a chunky boy that melts people from above.

Also ballistics are important if you want it to be accurate while airborne.
If I were to strap a gun on drone I would try to get it on a fixed wing shahed like propulsion system and have it roam around gliding

Wouldn't that require a landing gear or at least a parachute to not have i destroyed while landing?
Why not build an actual airplane at that point?

WW2 schematics are easy to come by, and it's the closest you can get to military grade schematics for cheap aircraft.

        put a p90 on it
        >low recoil compared to rifle rounds
        >better penetration than most pistol rounds
        >good capactiy

Better to get a 3x3 array of those single shot grenade launchers.

Then you have a 9 round grenade artillery drone, which can be fired one at a time or all at once.

Or, alternatively, you load the equivalent or larger amount of munitions and simply use it as a remote controlled rocket.

Can be more accurate than an RPG and with a larger payload.

That is just off the top of the head.

    Improvised weapons require creativity.

They are often associated with guerilla forces.

Using a commercial drone as a very straightforward missile, that detonates on impact or remote trigger, is very inexpensive and devastating. Moreso for an established military than any sort of irregular forces.

You can prepare multiple drones in a single station, even with multiple pilots, to launch drone after drone after drone. They key is not increasingly complexity, but increasing volume. If you have a swarm of 50 of these laying out, you can launch 50 computer guided missiles from a single control device. Or, you can launch them more efficiently with multiple pilots.

These can be deployed by infantry in the field, from armored vehicles, from established fortifications for long range missions, and even from aircraft from helicopters. None of which are things I own or can afford.

I would coin the device a "quadrotor missile" or "quadrotor bomb" or "quad bomb" or whatever sounds best. It's not quite a missile but not quite an IED either.

In terms of cost/impact I think the most efficient means of fighting infantry and armored vehicles is just loading it with the heaviest and most powerful explosives it can realistically carry. Even just a shaped charge or C4.

C4 would be ideal, you could paste it around the drone without messing up the aerodynamics.

A regular quadcopter can't carry the 6+ pounds of a P90 but it can easily carry 1-2 half-pound VOGs. They don't need complicated mechanisms or have recoil issues or have aiming at an angle issues either.

Not really. Turkey is making both.
Including an unmanned helicopter, the TAI T625.

Do disposable single-use guns exist? I imagine you can make something really lightweight if it doesn't need to be able to shoot more rounds than the drone can carry.

The problem with autoloading guns is that the mechanism to reload one shot after another is extremely weight inefficient, something that is incredibly important on a small drone. Considering the reduced accuracy of multiple shots you will need even more rounds to have any sort of effect, increasing weight even further and forcing you to sacrifice your ammunition count to compensate.
Explosives are just more efficient and effective. Kinetic guns are just not great for drone use. Automatic grenade launchers are good but they're incredibly heavy.
Metal Storm and their superposed loaded guns are probably the closest thing to a practical gun you can add to a drone.

.17HMR and mount it pointing down to take advantage of the recoil.
