Best Axe

What is the best axe for daily wood chopping? My boyfriend chops like an insane amount of wood, he’s obsessed with it and obsessed with axes so he has some already. He also has a big maul and some hatchets, but I want to get him a new axe specifically
I don’t care about the cost, just whatever is the best that a wood chopper would be thrilled to get

Gränsfors Bruk Small Forest Axe, best all around, doubled in price in the last decade though

      Anonymous

That's a nice axe for camping but not for daily use to chop wood behind the house. You'll want a bigger one. Bigger head and longer handle.

The best chopping axe at home is actually a "cheaper" one from the local hardware store. Its called a splitting axe.

        Anonymous

Gransfors Bruk has an entire line of axes for all uses. If he is into axes he will appreciate whatever Gransfors Bruk you get him.
I have 3 different sizes of them but do not use them because I consider them family heirlooms. The axes I use I buy from the local hardware store.

        Collins.

        https://i.imgur.com/WufAt60.jpg

There was a storm here last night and a 40ft birch came down in my front yard. With a $40 collins axe, 4lb head, 36" hickory handle I got to work. Took a few hours but processed the whole tree.

I have no idea why people who aren't professional loggers want a $200 axe. Well, I can understand afficionados of the craft too, but for utilitarian purposes it's the same thing.

Sledge and a wedge is best for cutting up firewood. If you are using firewood for heat in something larger than a tiny house you should invest in some kind of mechanical contraption though.

These anons are correct. For heating a home use a hardware store axe, a twelve pound sledge and wedges, a splitting maul, etc. The OP should stay in the kitchen and make sandwiches, not buy tools she knows nothing about.

Reddit is a huge problem. They tell everyone that a hardware store axe is unsuable, made of the flimsiest of materials and will literally disintegrate in your hands.
For many other subs like computer peripherals, there are brand representatives in the subs called out. There is no question that brands like gransfors are over shilled on there. I'm not saying they're bad axes, I'm saying cheap axes aren't that much worse in quality.
Would be 100% better if these expensive companies just sold the individual axe heads imo..

biggest problem i found with HW store axes is the selection.
basically they have felling axes in varying length handles, and splitting mauls, but more niche geometries, not so much. i wound up getting a helko splitting axe, it's lighter than my fiskar's maul, and better at splitting than any of the felling axes I have. my timber is all under 18" in diameter, so the maul was overkill to begin with.

spending $40 for a HW store axe or $170 for an overpriced, imported axe isn't that big of a deal though. both are tools that with proper care will outlive you.

              Anonymous

yeah its a bit like good cast iron. 40 or 170 bucks really doesn't matter over the course of a few decades.

              >my timber is all under 18" in diameter, so the maul was overkill to begin with.
So like the of your middle finger to elbow right? More convenient with a maul if you strike right down the middle.
I just an hour ago got done splitting a few 18 to 22 inch diameter logs with a 1600g ochsenkopf rhineland pattern axe. Just start from the sides.
Idk, maybe id use a maul more if I had stuff harder than pine, birch, fir, spruce...

Gransfors are super overpriced... it is sad they cucked out so hard as a company... I hope the woke mind virus ends soon. Anyways folks, you are better off getting Hultafors (Hults Bruk).

      Anonymous

No. Swedish axes are pieces of shit. You either have completely useless basedboy luxury axes like gransfors or the brut axes, or the fiskars cheaper models.

For actual work, get a Helko work axe. They're just as "le heirloom quality1111!!!" but are actually usable for extended work.
If you get him a helko work Bavarian woodworker axe, he can use it for anything and it can stand an ass beating.

Their taxmania axe or vario 2000 is better and probably something more OP's speed as a WOW axe for daily chopping and all around use.
Actually OP just get him the vario 2000. Its not traditional but its a new design super axe. Doubt he has one.

        >helko work Bavarian woodworker axe
Not OP, I've been obsessively looking at axes for the last three days, possibly 20 hours spent twiddling thumbs over basque juaregi, ochsenkopf, gransforse american felling axe, council tool velvicuts, even other helko axes mentioned in the thread but I ultimately settled on this one. Just ticks all the autistic boxes.
Now I can finally be free of this fricking doom scrolling for recommendations and other bullshit.

        >Fiskars
        >Swedish
Boi, Fiskars is Finnish. Fiskars owns Gerber too btw. They are decent working mans axes, they are what Finnish army uses as well (cheap, light for size and takes abuse from neglecting conscripts with no problems). Hell, they even come with a 25 year warranty for their fibreglass handles.

          >They are decent working mans axes, they are what Finnish army uses as well (cheap, light for size and takes abuse from neglecting conscripts with no problems)
If you are in the US, Fiskar axes are like 70 dollars. Our cheap equivalent is collins axes made in mexico, or council tools made in the US. Its what linemen or other assorted workers use to beat up and get shit done. Helko werk also does this but only with their commercial grade line that companies buy in bulk for their workers.
They're issued to your conscripts because there is a requirement for military equipment to be manufactured in the country, unless you have some other higher up contract with allied countries. In the US it means Berry act compliant, or the latter example of contracts with NATO being the new sig rifle/pistol for the army. What I'm trying to say is, that factoid wont tell you anything about the actual quality of the axe.

            Anonymous

Yet you decided to skip the quarter century long warranty that they come with over here. One store chain actually doubled the manufacturers warranty. Doesn't that say anything about the quality of their axes?

              Anonymous

No, you could offer such a warranty easily knowing that most buyers will never put them through their paces, and the scale of production lowers the cost of each individual axe so far below the sale value that they can afford to give many away due to the low expense.
Gransfors warranty is far more impressive, due to their small scale of production and the high cost of each individual axe as they pay their workers decently. BUT, they also produce so few actual working axes, such as their american felling axe, that the warranties will never really be used. Small forest axe is only used for shaving sticks, cutting up flowers, showing off to your hipster friends, or other "bushcraft" homosexualry so its never in danger of getting a warranty claim on it.

I'm sure all of these are great for you because you're not paying out the ass for them. Same way that ochsenkopf axes are affordable hardware store axes in Europe, but close to 200 dollars in the USA. In the USA, a collins is a beater axe, and a council tool is a nice axe on the level of the high end euro ones. People here actually use their axes and the target demographic for council tool axes didn't care for fancy engraved heirloom velvicut to match gransfors, so they were discontinued.

You cannot fricking convince me that those gransfors axes are anything but a toy.

      >"I need it to be light in case I travel 100000 miles"
Fair enough, and probably the only niche application but I'd probably bring an essee-6 for this anyways.

      >"Its versatile and can do everything"
It can't. That falls squarely in the realm of 3 to 6lb with >30". Saying you will use another axe entirely to chop wood behind the house, well you can just the same get a regular standard axe and use a knife for any of the smaller tasks you planned to use that boutique axe for anyways.

For everyday around the house just get a standard sized axe. There is this new trendy obsession with smaller boy axes and its impossible to understand. Maybe some youtuber meme where they talk about "ounces become pounds" like they're some kind of marine.

        Anonymous

Boys axes are good for plodding around your property. I use my council tool 28 inch boys axe as a wedge, a feller for small shit, a limber, a pickaroon, etc. The only reason I don't use a full sized as much is because I can use the boys axe one handed if I choke up a little bit.

Middle of the road in price and quality. What I usually recommend for somebody's first axe. For premium options their Velvicut and Wood-Craft lines are good but you'll definitely notice the price jump.

Since he has axes already maybe consider getting him something else, or better yet if you have the time you could restore and rehandle an axe (best price:quality ratio and he'll love it even more than anything you buy).

Boiled linseed oil is pretty standard. You give it enough coats over time and the handle darkens well.

Sports utility is 1060 steel, velvicut is 5160. Heat treat is more precise for the velvicut and the axes contracted for the US forest service. Oh, and forest service axes are 4140 steel.
There is the extra fit and finish on velvicut as well, but that is a much smaller cost to the total premium you pay for the velvicuts.
