Shooting birds and other small fast-moving game like squirrels or rabbits is literally why the shotgun was invented. That is, in fact, the purpose of a shotgun. Everything else is either something which mimics hunting, like clay pigeon sports, or is a specialized niche, like guarding prisoners, shooting less-lethal munitions, or breaching doors. They're also more accessible than rifles: both financially and legally in many areas.

Rifles aren't that good at killing small game (even .22), and offer less field for creativity with the load (look at Taofledermaus or вceпyли to see the variety of different slugs and mixed projectiles).

Good general purpose tool that can use a bunch of different ammo and will last forever if not left to rust thanks to low-pressures.
Not everything needs to be the supreme ultra optimal device.

Jack of all trades, master of none.
    >wanna shoot out to 300-400m
Use a slug and judge drop
    >wanna get birds
    Bird or turkey shot
    >need to shred a man
    00 or No.4 buckshot
    >wanna get smol critters
    Small game or birdshot
    >want cheap ammo
Unless a boutique or out of production gauge, plentiful and cheap
    >wanna experiment with weird shit
Hulls are cheap for reloading, it's a smooth steel tube, put what you want through it
Rifles are specialized tools. The rifle you use for a DMR will not work for a cqb role well. A pdw/carbine is not ideal for DMR or precision long range.

    TL;DR
    >op is either baiting tard or underage that has never held a scattergat.

      shoot out to 300-400m
      >Use a slug and judge drop
moron please. Do you have any idea how much slugs drop after 100 yards let alone 400? A 1oz rifled slug zeroed at 100 yards drops 11" by 150 yards. You'd have to aim multiple feet above the target to hit at 300, let alone 400. Sabot slugs are better but not by that much. You've never shot a slug past 200 yards in your life.
      >>want cheap ammo
      >Unless a boutique or out of production gauge, plentiful and cheap
Mostly true, but .223 is nearly the same since 12ga came up in price. It's about 32cpr for 12 ga target loads and you can get brass .223 for .34-35cpr (non sale prices for both). 55gr FMJ is more versatile than 7.5 or 8 shot. Price difference is neglible.

Shotguns are great. They are very fun and everyone should get one. You're right about most of what you said. But don't lie about what they can do, they can stand alone on their merits without exaggerating

Hitting fast moving targets, which is why it's used for birds. The same thing applies to humans. Also hit like a truck.

    Situation 1:
    >Warwick Davis runs through your backyard stealing your gnomes for "personal use"
    >Point and shoot with a rifle
    >Likely miss
    >Point and shoot with shotgun
    >Warwick Davis is dead
    Situation 2:
    >Warwick Davis is in your house
    >You live in an american home
    >Rifle penetrates Davis + inner wall and kills your sleeping dog (or not, if you have a bitch rifle)
    >Shotgun, if loaded with the right load, less likely to penetrate, killing only Davis and not your dog behind him
    Situation 3:
    >Warwick Davis attacks you when you come back from vacation. You haven't maintained your guns for some time
    >Rifle jams up, Davis kills you
    >Shotgun has been left on the front porch for half a year and still works.
    Situation 4:
    >Warwick Davis can now only be killed by garlic for some reason
    >Rifle doesn't shoot garlic, you die
    >Shotgun shoots whatever the fuck you put in the shell, you put Davis into the underworld again.

Dig around in your couch cushions. You're bound to find enough change to buy a Maverick 88.

Get a used shotgun at a pawn shop. You could probably get a single shot one for less than a hundred dollars

I have a smoothbore flintlock musket that can be loaded with shot. I should probably grab an inexpensive shotgun just to have even though I can’t think of what I’d even use it for.

I grabbed a single shot H&R for a hundred bucks a couple years ago at a pawn shop. I use it for long walk rabbit/squirrel hunts since it's lighter than my 1100, and for turkey hunting in shitty conditions since I don't care if it gets scratched up/dinged up/rained on. A bit of oil, a paa through with a patch, and you're golden

You don't even need them for birds. You can find ducks and geese chilling on land if you stalk around the edges of ponds and marshes. You can shoot grouse on the ground by marking the spot you spooked them and carefully going back to the exact same spot the next day. Also, shotguns are useless for rabbits unless you have dogs. Rabbits don't reveal themselves until you practically step on them, then they run erratically and stop. They're always too close for a shotgun and you can't lead them. A fucking .22 pistol is superior to a shotgun for most purposes. Shotguns are the most useless weapons in the world.

Rifles double as hunting weapons if you were foraging, and that's basically poaching and is disallowed in a civilized state. Shotguns are the standard for typical people especially shorter barrels for travelers.

I mean shotguns are kinda the Jack of all trades depending on where you live. I might be reiterating what others have said but for example if you were a poorfag in the north east and have a $500 budget for one gun, nothing beats a 12ga. You’re never going to be taking more than a 100 shot in those dense woods for deer hunting so slugs got you covered, plus small game and birds are covered as well. Home defense? Covered with buck shot. If you’re looking for one gun to do everything you need you can’t go wrong. Are there better guns for deer and home defense? Sure. But if you’re looking for a gun that is efficient in all situations you’re covered with a 12g.

    >Besides shooting birds
You say that like it's incidental. I've made a hell of a lot of dinners with my shotgun. Also when I was in university, I lived on the outskirts of town in a trailer park. I had a cheap pump 12 and I'd go waterfowl, grouse and hare hunting all fall and winter (and get bad grades). I'd invite pretty girls over for dinner, cook them an ethically harvested gourmet meal, have some high minded conversation about whatever, and then typically have sex with them.

Anyways, shotguns are pretty fun and cool.

shooting moving targets, from birds to deer to people, is the point, as you identify
taking close shots at running game with buckshot is no longer popular elsewhere, but i assure you it works perfectly adequately here in my shotgun only hunting stays

They are king everywhere outside the US where you can easily get better options for a fair price. Anywehere else :
    >can shoot small and big games, flying and walking
    >can defend your home and family, can fight in a militia style urban combat situation
    >wide variety of available cheap ammo
    >easy to use, easy to teach
    >normies think they a-ok because huntin' and wood or something so it's a cultural asset
    >if it's a pump, tchac-tchac is kino
    All around it's based.

you can fire non lethal and less lethal ammo with a shotgun. Also you have fun shit like dragon's breath and explosive ammo.

It's an all-in-1. Shoot skeet with skeet shot, shoot squirrel and rabbit with #6 (Rem Game Load), shoot dove with #8 (Rem Game Load), shoot duck with BB shot, Turkey with #5 turkey loads, fox and coyote with whatever you use there (not familiar enough here), deer and hogs with buckshot, and deer or hogs or even larger game with slugs. No fox around while you're hunting? Go hunt squirrels. No squirrels around? Hunt dove. Not the best choice for most things but it's a gun that can do almost everything. Yes, you can hunt BOTH deer and groundhogs with .30-06, sure, but what will be left of the groundhog?

For a lot of us Euros, getting a shotgun is very easy, while rifle licenses are more restrictive. That's because shotguns are seen both in social and judicial senses as a general purpose tool that is an essential part of rural life, while a rifle is better for killing large animals. I don't really see the point of jumping through the hoops to get a rifle when a shotgun is a perfectly adequate machine for all I want to do.
Besides, a shotgun is a far better self-defense weapon.
