is ukraine really pulling "local rebels" card?

Same way the Luhansk and Donetsk republics were staffed with "Ukrainian" volunteers.

Yes. Except that they actually are local rebels, mostly comprised of neo-nazis from Russia who dislike the KGB glowies in charge of their nation.

The Russians entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to sponsor separatist movements all over Ukraine, and that no one was going to sponsor separatist movements in Russia
At Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk and half a hundred other places they put this naive theory into practice
they have sown the wind, and now they will reap the whirlwind

Transliteration itslef is a spook, picking english characters to sound out foreign language is a completeluy arbitrary decision.

ye thats why we get h = kh, and if you want kh =kkh lol

Doesn't matter. The English transliteration is retarded. But yes, Ukrainians pronounce g as h.

              Anonymous

to be slightly more precise, anon, they do have g, it's just has a separate letter
              Г = H
              Ґ = G

                Anonymous

Ґ is so rarely used, that using H instead of G for Г is absolutely retarded.

                Anonymous

and? those still represent distinctively separate sounds, and rarity doesn't negate the fact that the closest english analogue to ukrainian г is h, while ґ is clearly closer to g.

When I was in high school, we used to joke that Ґ was added after Ukrainian independence to distinguish the language from Russian. And that’s its only purpose

it wasn't any different for me, since there's like ~950 words (if we ignore transliterations) have this letter out of what, ~300k common words and another ~600k uncommon? that's like 0.001%

Shut the fuck up, vatnik pidors. Ґ exists exactly because regular Г is equivalent to Latin H, so Ґ is necessary to reflect the pronunciation of Latin G in foreign loanwords.

                Anonymous

                you're the pidor, gay.
replying to guy telling how they used to joke about ґ with "yeah, we joked the same" and sharing my musings on why that joke exists doesn't mean that i don't like the letter.

Have you retards considered just going back to your linguistic roots and using Г as a Г instead of a Х?

Well, the truth is they are really Nazis. More precisely, radical nationalists.
These guys are a consequence of the fact that in 2000-2010 there was an active persecution of nationalists by the state. They were literally skinheads with the slogan Russia for Russians.
And then many fled to Ukraine.
By the way, they have never supported the annexation of Crimea or other territories, but for completely different reasons. They simply recognize the existence of such a nation as a Ukrainian and therefore if Russia is for Russians, then Ukraine is for Ukrainians.

Some of them are blurred out, some are not. Most likely the ones that are blurred out have family in Russia who could be threatened / want to be able to go back and live in Russia after the war if they lose, and the ones who aren't blurred out, their family is living outside of Russia (e.g. in Ukraine) & they don't plan to live in Russia after the war unless they win.

I think that's the danger for Russia though. Because the vast majority of the population is so politically apathetic, they'll accept any authority as long as it means they can continue to live out there lives as normal. So if the RVC or RL rock up and the FSB or Rosgvrdia can't BTFO them, the local population will just accept them as the new bosses now.

      Anonymous

      It's exactly opposite.
Looks like Ukraine can't start action against Russian territory thus enabling very comfortable position of one way border. Russians don't need force to guard this thousand kilometers border against Ukrainian military ut Ukraine must have reserves along this line, as Rusians can make new attack through border as they please. But now Russians concentrated pretty much entire land force on the small Donbass front.
Ukraine is interested in the moving war to Russia but they are held back bu Western allies.
Russian separatists is a way to circumvent such limitations. "It's Russian internal unrest".

What even is this timeline. However surely there is no way this isn't a false flag, right? The part about having skirmishes at the border is realistic (are you really gonna let artillery target you from Russia and not do anything just because it's technically Russian soil). But the whole calling for a referendum and doing roman salutes while attacking, along with the timing, seems awfully convenient for the muscovites

I'm not really sure how convenient it is for Moscow

western goodwill relies on Ukraine not extending beyond their borders (at least not beyond clear military targets within firing range of it). Ukraine is about to receive jets and a whole lot of other shit and this one little regiment is probably not going to make any significant gains in Belgorod anyway

          Anonymous

I don't think that's true. Mainly, we stipulate that Ukraine shouldn't use OUR weapons to attack past the border. I don't really see what the big deal about Ukraine occupying Russian territory (if it can do so, and if it is strategically advantageous) when Russia invaded first. Morally speaking, there would be nothing wrong with it, and I'm not even sure that nukes would fly if they took Moscow - the Russian nuclear use policy stipulates that, aside from as a reaction to incoming ballistic missiles or nuclear attack against Russia, Russia will only use nuclear weapons if the survival or the state or its nuclear strike capability are at risk. Moscow is a very important city, but it is not the Russian state, nor do they (probably) have the only nuclear launch button in Russia.

Anyway, that is wishful thinking, because Ukraine will obviously not try and push to Moscow. That wouldn't work. At the most extreme we could possibly hope to see them take a few border towns. That'd be pretty wild. They could form the basis for a DMZ after the war.

I'm sure that the Ukes' NATO allies know all about and have OK'd all of their plans in advance, so if it's a Russian false-flag they can deny it and if it IS an Ukie ploy then it's not going to change anything
If it's separatists attacking without Ukrainian permission using weapons they were given then that'd probably the worst situation for western goodwill

      Anonymous

That is what my gut says, but when I think about it there's no way in hell this would possibly be a good thing for Russia. So, what, now there's a chance they'll lose their own territory? Publicizing the rebels does Putin no good, it might just inspire uprisings. And they will obviously have to be seen to respond to the threat, so they must divert troops to reinforce the area, taking men away from the front. I simply do not see what Russia has to gain from doing this.

          1. As long as they don't have direct evidence of such, I don't think western leaders will care. And they wouldn't fall for such a ridiculous trick anyway. All it takes is for the CIA to say, "yeah this is a false flag don't buy it" and I suspect most of the west will trust that it is a trick.

          2. I'm pretty sure this is just about as total of a war Russia can fight. If they mobilize 5 million men and throw them on the front line armed with nothing but rusty Mosin-Nagants, it will change nothing, assuming those ancient stockpiles of guns haven't been totally sold off. Russian war production is a joke, they have no more money to pour into it and it would just be stolen even if they did. They are going just about as all-in as they can at this point, I think.

So, he was right when he said Ukraine's plan for the counteroffensive is to occupy Belgorod and use it as a bargaining chip?

      Anonymous

It would be a good idea. Russia will not deviate from its course of trying to dig its feet in and send wave after wave of men to hold the front and advance extremely slowly while praying for a miracle/that the war will go on for so long that their inch-per-week crawl will eventually reach Kyiv. If Ukraine can take a Russian city and say, "we will give this back in exchange for all our land", this is one way negotiations can restart. Russia will not give up without receiving something, and Ukraine refuses to give any of its own land. As all of us HOI4 generals know, the way to make the enemy surrender is to occupy their cities. Then, if they can pose a credible threat in the counteroffensive, and show off their new Western weapons, perhaps they can convince Russia that the attack will succeed and that they ought to simply give up and spare the soldiers' lives. This way, victory can be had without bloodshed. But I doubt they will agree to that deal.

Yes, the entirety of the Russian border not currently engaged in the war is lightly defended because they aren't expecting Ukraine to go in for political reasons.

I'm pretty sure they've got more people on the Belarussian border in case their fuckwit puppet gets couped and they need to go in and save him.

Belgorod itself has way more troops though because it's a staging area for deployments and supplies into the NE of Ukraine.

This has literally been true the whole fucking war. They had to dismantle their defenses in Kharkiv to feed the Sievierodonetsk offensive. They've got just enough people to hold the line against current resistance everywhere and nothing else. That's why whenever Ukraine's turned up the heat, Russia's collapsed.
