because?

Just moved to central NC and really want to get into deer hunting starting this fall. No experience whatsoever but am an intermediate shooter with my Savage 311 and S&W model 15-2 in pic related. 75 yards is about my maximum range with either of them, but 50 is about my limit for being able to reliably score good hits with slugs / 38 target ammo. Would it be worth it buying myself a hunting rifle as well or would I be better just sticking with the two guns I already know?

My plan is to start walking public lands and set up trail cams 2-5 weeks prior to deer season and then climb up a tree or whatever and wait. With my 311's full/modified choke barrels any deer that get within 50 yards of me will be fish food against either of my guns, but I just dont know if its realistic or not to expect having a shot at that close a distance. Any info much appreciated!

Get your hunters Ed card. You’ll need that. Check in with your local wildlife office, they’re not allowed to tell you where the game is, but bros be bros. Find your local gun club. Even if it’s just trap, they’ll have the hookups. good luck anon. Putting yourself at the top of the food chain is tops.

Also depressed by the absolute state of /k/.
Grab yourself a Henry single shot. Inexpensive, good quality milled steel frame, comes in any caliber you'd want for innawoods use. Can be broken in half and put in a pack. Comes with usable (fully adjustable) sights but Williams sells a fully adjustable rear peep, you might need a taller front sight, it takes a 3/8 dovetail so no issue there.

You'll want to join a good local fudd forum.

    Looks like something like: https://nchuntandfish.com/forums/index.php

Lurk the deer hunting forum and maybe find yourself a hunting club to join.

Your weapons are fine, but you could stand to get a decent scoped rifle in .308.

Poor combination. That's a plains cartridge. In the south, large bore is king.

Fair. 30-30? I’ve taken plenty of deer with that. .45-70 is my go to elk gun. Might be too big for NC.

hunting clubs aren't real anon as much as I wish they were. Fudd lore is sometimes too good to be true.

Maybe illegal. Check your state regs. Also check legal methods of take and hunter education requirements. I recommend starting with small game like rabbits. Learn to butcher them and learn to cook game meat.

I hate to see /k/ how it is now too OP, sorry man.
I'm Midwest but from what I've heard Eastern US is the same sort of conditions in spots; close range shots, shotgun or archery only often.
    I like your 311; I have one in .410.
Anyways, I don't think using your .38 is realistic.
Public lands in NC sound like they would see alot of pressure; especially during firearm season. if it's your first time you may also consider a managed hunt or hopefully you have a buddy who isn't green.
