Germany knew they couldn't win a long war, they had to have a tactical or technological advantage to give them the edge
It's the main reason why WW2 was so kino

It came into production in '42 but it was designed before the war even started. The goal was to simplify building the guns because the earlier MG34 was so expensive to machine. The guy who designed it was a manufacturing engineer not a gun designer.

Their entire infantry doctrine was based on fixing the enemy with the MG.
    And we copied it.

We stole their whole doctrine and then added our air-power to it

not really, everyone around that time had the concept of fire and maneuver, be it the Germans, Brits or US. Key difference is that the US had appropriate firepower even if the squad automatic weapon was reloading or redeploying , which cannot be said for other armies, the germans included.

If your BAR or m1919 goes down (which are both some of the worst automatic fire base elements of WWII) just Garands is arguably not enough to gain fire superiority over an MG42. Or even a 34.
Maybe over the japs with their shit. Or the Italians. Is definitely better than just bolties though.
Honestly they should have just issued all carbines (preferably with earlier implementation of the M2) with the occasional scoped M1903 thrown in. Although I still love the Garand, which was originally designed to be in .276Pedersen with 20 round detachable box mags.

          >42 shoots at one guy with a garand
          >9 guys shoot at the 42

idk, sounds more than possible. bolt rifles don't count, they are glorified ammo carriers ,like british webbing for rilfemen just had extra bren mags.

There is abasolutely zero evidence that Germany was running out of materials for ammunition, they were running out of materials for making new armor/aircraft. The MG-42 is the best machine gun ever made. The US Army even tried complying it & failed. The allies & Soviets called it Hitler's Buzzsaw for a reason. The MG42 also completely changed the doctrine of infantry - high rate of fire & caliber made it perfect to be used as a heavy machine-gun for defense, yet it was also very light with the barrel that was easy to remove & reattach. This allowed German infantry to rapidly move the machine gun to the front & rear. In the start of the war, it completely confused the shit of the allies because they couldn't figure out if they were attack a German defensive position or if the Germans were conducting an assault.

      >There is abasolutely zero evidence that Germany was running out of materials for ammunition
The problem is logistics. They could never get enough of the materials they did have to the front line on the eastern front.

they started the nitrates meant for farming to make the ammo as early as 43, if you have to cut food production to make room for the ammo I would count that as running out of materiel
This is also even after cutting ammo production due to bombing

Frick off. MG-42 is one of the things they got right. An MG with a high fire rate beats a slow MG.

Damn I'd hate to make the best GPMG of the century during the biggest war of the century where GPMG's are used to a revolutionary effect so much so that after the war literally everyone adopts them.
