Some high end air rifles can get muzzle energy exceeding a 22lr., but those are firing 1,500ish feet per second. Your standard 400fps BB gun isn't killing anything bigger than a chipmunk.

AEA Challenger Bullpup BigBore is a one of the best examples. Using pressurized air, its 45 and 50cal variant achieve 600 joules of muzzle energy, (more or less the energy of a 9x19mm round). However with these super powerful airguns one problem becomes very apparent: you have very high air consumption and thus only get 4 or 5 shots. unlike weaker ones, where one tank can last you much longer.
having exchangeable replacement canisters, and using a compressor or a large air bottle to refill them are basically mandatory at that point. Hand pumps do exist, but they produce maybe 5 joules worth of pressure per pump. And the more full a canister becomes, the more difficult pumping gets.

Break barrels can hit 25-30 joule.
PCP airguns up to 1000 joule and beyond.

A breakbarrel gamo jungle magnum has around 45 J of energy. Not really 22 Lr power but it is probably technicaly possible to kill someone with it. A 22 lr peestol has about 70 J. A rifle has a 100+. However there are Pcp guns thet can get a 22 pellet at 70+( 70 J, 100 J , 500 J 1000J ecc.) As far as break barrels go there is a israelitetube video of a guy killing a little boar with a gamo magnum breakbarrel with a headshot

I was writing on the move so sorry. I was wrong . 22 pelets at 70 ish J, bigger pelets at higher energies up to 1000J+

          22lr is like 170J

What in the frick is with all the noguns eurotrash.
And the worst part is I came in here to say all this, to defend airguns and such, but using Hasguns units, not gayojewls.

Not a nogunz {pic related, no i am not shoving eveything }but I am eurotrash , I would like something like the second amendment but i do not have it and the position is very very unpopular in my c**try, .
            Onto my point
Just like it is easyer for YOU to understand " foot grains of freedom pints" (btw americ**ts and britbongs have different pints) It is much easier for ME to understand kilogram-meters per infringement seconds2 . Try using your brain and a little bit of internet : google "70 joules is how many ftlbs" and google will calculate for you most of the time.
            > 100 ftlbs of energy = 135 ish Joules, 100 J =73.7 ish ftlbs,
            > 100 ft/s = 30 ish m/s , 100 m/s = 325ish ft/s
            >1 gram = 15 ish grains. Definitive precise measurments are IMO unneccesary due to variations in ammo and barrellenght
Also hasguns (imperial) measurements are often used to describe firearms because America is the biggest firearms market (although my ammo boxes have stickers on them translating imperial to metric so i dont have to do so myself and the sideefect of that is that it reinforces the use of metric for me) .
Why are airguns described in metric?
            - they are relatively accesible almost anywhere not completely and utterly cucked and are not terribly popular in Burgerland (compared to 22 lr rifles atleast) and most of the world uses metric so most airguns are described in metric although it probably is translated to imperial on american shops And websites. There , an explenation on why there are many eurotrash here and why we use the metric system to describe shit.

You either underestimate airgun power or overstate capabilities of .22LR, but yes they exist and COST A LOT.

Some high end air rifles can get muzzle energy exceeding a 22lr., but those are firing 1,500ish feet per second. Your standard 400fps BB gun isn't killing anything bigger than a chipmunk.

Many air rifles of higher caliber match or exceed pistol ammo of similar caliber. Example any .357 air rifle that shoots super sonic matches .357 magnum, .22 cal run-of-the-mill PCP air rifle far out performes 22lr, .30 cal air rifles far out performe 32acp (idk about 30.tokarev and 30SP).

Generally, the larger the bore, the better it performes up to about .38, where the amounts of air needed at high pressure makes it hard and expensive (in equipment) to accelerate pellets at high enough velocity to be accurate at range. The low BC of high caliber pellets makes it disproportionately more inefficient to shoot than smaller bore.

If you want an air rifle for home defense or no kill anything larger than a rabbit, I would suggest .30 caliber, as it is gaining popularity, has semi auto rifles at reasonable prices and maintains good accuracy and efficiency. Or 357 caliber air rifles, as they are more effective at close range, but generally are larger, heavier and less supported.

But don't expect to be accurate at medium ranges (75meters plus), as they are just glorified cold PCCs.

Yes. There's been a few story's in the news over the years of people being killed by air rifles and pistols, and one where a man committed suicide using a 12ftlb air rifle by shooting himself in the head.
The legal power limit in the UK (before you need a loicense) is 12ftlb, typically that means around 800fps in .177 cal. More than enough to kill. That pump air rifle can probably put out around 10ftlb, so yeah.

It can certainly kill, it is just less of a gun and more of a weapon you have to get up close and personal with. There are stories of people being killed here (in the US) by criminals with even those crappy little air pistols. I'm not sure exactly how they've done it but my guess is a few good shots into the eye to the brain would kill.

Q guy in britbongia managed to kill himself with an airpistol to the temple so they started regulating them there. Also a 2 kids got shot and died to airguns. Those 3 cases were used to justify airgun regulation but then again not suprising considering they at one point tried to regulate knives

Yes. moronic drug addicts kill other druggies about once a year with those here, since real guns are regulated. I don't know how they manage to die, I suppose a lot of people get shot with those and some are unlucky enough for the pellet to pass the ribs into the heart or something. Some of the higher end ones probably have joules approaching a 22 short

Diana 280 .177cal, lovely 12ftlb rifle that's pretty rare here in North America.

Nice R9/HW95, what caliber is she?
I'm looking for an HW97k next if I can find one, Weihrauch makes top shelf springers.
