Ballistol Bros

For those of you who use the the WD-40 of the gun world, what form you get it in? Do you get the wipes, the spray, or the straight liquid?
Also, firearm upkeep general, I guess.

Normal ballistol is toxic as well, though they do make a special product which is safety rated for incidental food contact. It looks like picrel. Is that what you're using?

Yes, yes. I know it's in the same. It's also mildly penetrating, and I have used it before to get a front sight out a dovetail. So it is a lubricant in practice, if not in name.

The wipes seem like a huge ripoff to me, you get so little of the product for your money, and it is limited in how it can be used. Get the spray. You can spray it of course, or you can apply just a tiny bit to a patch or a rag and now you have a wipe. You can spray it into a cup if you need a lot of it, say for soaking something in. You can use the spray "straw" for precision application.

So far I've looked up balistol and breakfast CLP.
Both are toxic if drank, balistol ahs more cancer causing shit, breakages only toxic ingredient can be harmful if inhaled, but it's chemical makeup males me think it mostly breaks into harmless byproducts when heated
Maybe I'll look at wd40 and hoppes but I'm not doing the whole list

Ballistol has white mineral oil (food grade is edible), oleac acid salts (used in makeup) and benzyl acetate which has an LD50 of roughly 2.5g per kilo.

Doesn't breakfree CLP still have PTFE in it?

If it's teflon, I don't care if it's on a MSDS. You don't want it anywhere near your face if the temps climb over 350C.

Yeah, if your gun parts are getting to 662°f, you're having worse problems, like the firefight you're in.

And the high heat conductivity of the metal will disperse the heat energy, dropping the temperature instantly.
                Lrn2thermodynamics.
If your reciver is getting to 662°, you will start having rounds cook off randomly, and your gas tube will probably fail any moment.
Not only that, there's no proof that chronic exposure to PTFE vapor does anything to humans health wise, its just conspiracy bullshit in the same veign as fluoride melting your brain and 5g towers causing sickness

Oh the fricking irony. I have layer of oil on my bolt and inside the BCG after every cleaning. If you want to tell me that isn't coming into contact with 700F+ gasses out the gas tube, okay. Cool story, bro.

                Anonymous

And even if it is, the oil isn't getting to that temperature without the BCG reaching that temperature first.

Haha, interestingly enough, primer compound auto-ignition temperature is exactly the same as Teflon breakdown temperature, 662°f.
So if your BCG is hot enough to start off gassing PTFE from a lubricant, you are about to have some interesting mechanical issues with your firearm.

Liquid. You can mix it with hot water to deep clean parts and remove cosmoline and it won't cause rust if you mix it properly. There are better products for certain applications but Ballistol is a good "do it all" because you can clean just about anything metal related with it. It protects the finish, lubes your bolt carrier, dissolves carbon fouling in your barrel, and you can also apply it to wood and leather to keep that in good shape. I even cleaned and lubed the locks and door hinges in my house with it. I've used it on nearly every firearm I own. Pistols, milsurp, AKs, ARs, bolt actions, and shotguns. Its extremely versatile

    So it seems like:
    >Breakfree CLP is probably less toxic and a better rust preventative than Ballistol (probably only matters if you sweat like a pig and/or are in a humid state)
    >Ballistol is still useful as a light lubricant/protectant and is good to have on hand for wood stocks/grips, plus leather if your holster's made out of it
Where does Hoppes fall into this? More specifically, does the No. 9 formula clean better than Ballistol or Breakfree, and does it prevent rust better than either? Does the Hoppes lube work better than Ballistol or Breakfree?
