It is a newb move to share a URL with the query parameters.

about half the size. the requirements the USAF submitted during the design process basically matches the real world usage of the B-2 over the last 20 years.

the average volume of ordinance the B-2 has dropped during real sorties is about what the B-21 will be able to carry.

stupid question maybe but are most bombers based in center of country because if they are being refueled like this anyways it's just safer to have them away from the coasts? are there other/better reasons?

          Anonymous

They're being based in multiple locations, but I think part of the reason is because they're strategic targets for nuclear weapons and they want those a bit away from major urban centers.

NGL I'm pretty hyped. First brand new strategic bomber since the end of the Cold War. It's just a bummer that we've all seen so many artist's renderings that the revealing of the prototype won't show anything really new.
I mean, they wouldn't pull off something like the F-19/F-117 thing, would they?
    >Oh look, our artist's renderings show this disc-shaped süper-sicrit plane while in reality the plane looks like Darth Vader's helmet built from lego bricks.

      Anonymous

Nah, the only reason the F-117 was so fricky was because their computers could only render that many pixels. The B-2 is pretty much the same thing but the flat edges are just way smaller. This new one will probably be even smoother.

        >the only reason the F-117 was so fricky was because their computers could only render that many pixels
Anon, I know that. Still nobody said a single word when Mattel (and others) released scale models of the "F-19" and even Tom frickin Clancy wrote about the disc-shaped F-19 in Red Storm Rising.

Hypothetically everything after the 1962 tri service designation act is supposed to be consecutive. There's a prototype, mock up, design, or production plane for every number from F-1 to f-35 (at least)

They were doing the same thing with bombers I think, minus ones that are already in use like the b52. I think the B-1 was the first bomber after the tri service designation act. So there's hypothetically 18 prototype/mockup/designs or they decided to frick their own rules and do the marketing thing by calling it the b21

    > About 600 people scored a “golden ticket” to the ceremony to watch in person as the B-21 is finally unveiled and towed (at least partially) out of its hangar to be viewed by the public for the first time. That list of lucky attendees includes Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, and an array of House and Senate lawmakers.

    > Northrop has been planning the B-21 rollout for months, and security will be of the utmost concern during today’s festivities. Attendees have been given strict guidance that prohibits taking smartphones into the event or shooting video during the ceremony. The B-21 will only be permitted to be photographed from a raised platform with cameras that meet lens requirements.

B-2 rolled out into the outside, it wasn't kept inside the hanger.

B-2 had a crowd, not seen in this picture, in front of and to the side of the aircraft.

B-2 rollout happened during the day.

But aside from that, yeah -- exactly the same.

    > A noticeable difference is in the debut itself. While both will have debuted in the Air Force’s Palmdale Plant 42, in 1988 the B-2 was rolled outdoors amid much public fanfare.

    > Given advances in surveillance satellites and cameras, the Raider will debut very much under wraps and will be viewed inside a hangar. Invited guests including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will witness the hangar doors open to reveal the bomber for its public introduction, then the doors will close again.

    Set your expectations accordingly.

wait I thought the plane had already flown, did she mean first public flight?

It's definitely flown secret flights. She had to have meant public. Back in the B-2 reveal era journalists rented a field neighboring the base to get a photo of the back of the plane. I wonder if modern journos can even try to attempt something similar or if they are too cowed now.

So, what is the point to manned stealth bombers anymore? What can they offer that a drone nearly 1/12th the size couldn't offer?

Why not just put the stealth tech into a missile/cruise missile and use a drone to provide precision targeting to the missile? Hell, even a big enough fin guided artillery shot with drone guidance would be 1/100th the cost and wouldnt be nearly as much a hands off approach to actually using out risk of tech falling into enemy hands (think the reluctance of using the F35 in combat ever since the F117 fiasco in serbia)

The SD literally said it can do AWACS, Recon, and bombing all in one chassis. Its an E3, B2, and U2 all rolled into one plane.... which are already planes that have drone based replacements.

I get the bomber has power projection but at this point with drone, missile, and spy satellite technology, is building massively expensive manned stealth bomber just Gun Boat Diplomacy?

Having trained human pilots behind enemy lines making the call to go ahead with the mission or even adjust it depending on local conditions even if under a total loss of contact with command. Strategic bombers are for complex mulitpart missions while drones (for now) are for picking away at single targets of opportunity.

That is a very good point. Thank you.

It's nuke capable which means it has to be piloted.

By that logic, shouldn't ICBMs also be manned?
