Because our national security depends on the US navy. We need them to view us as an asset, not a burden, so we maintain a small yet highly elite army and tune them up for overseas deployment with the yanks. Same reason we've joined all their wars for the past century, even the dumb ones.

            >saves Australia from the Japanese

to play devil's advocate on that gay's behalf america did take a very active role in the pacific theater both politically and militarily: to the point of excluding other nation's (mostly the UK) ability to fight and participate in theater, wanting it to be an american endeavor, while later assuming a position of political importance in meting out justice to the japanese government, to such an extent that nations such as australia or china felt (possibly, rightfully) snubbed over having their demands or considerations not met or executed - especially in the case of the chinese who had suffered for like more than a decade at their hand - and engendered no small animosity as a result.

that said and with the benefit of hindsight, lmao it was totally the right call so i will offer NO apologies or devil's advocacy in that regard

The political and cultural shift in this country has been truly remarkable to witness first-hand. Before the Pandemic, people had a fairly apathetic view towards China, and people who expressed hawkish views on China (e.g. Andrew Hastie) were marginalized and mocked.
Now, after everyone has personally suffered as a result of the Pandemic, people have become very hostile to the CCP. The Pandemic also caused people to start paying attention to all of the awful things the CCP does (Uyghur oppression, Tibet, Hong Kong crackdown, threatening to invade Taiwan, tyrannical police state, debt-trap diplomacy, openly viewing us and the free world in general with contempt, etc.)

Now, both major parties effectively have a bipartisan view on the PRC, and are pursuing identical defense and foreign policy. Labor used to be moderately pro-China, but now they are staunchly against them, save for a few holdouts.

You misread the situation. Anything that you are noticing is actually a fall in our diplomatic quality and public discourse in general. Previously our international policy with any of our threats was to say very little, infiltrate like mad and push a ridiculous amount of paper towards the right people outside of the public arena. All that dumbfuckery around covid represented a fall of our power because our political class increasingly became too stupid to really deal with intelligence and spycraft.

Then somehow the ASD broke through and copped a bigger slice of the pie. Hopefully it's in time. Hastie is a tosspot, btw. Wish you would stop mentioning him.
