Attention all retards:

I'm poor and want an AR-15. It will not be shot very often or mistreated. What are the pros/cons of buying a rifle at sub $500 price points? Don't do it anon. Just save up longer for something better. If you literally are incapable of saving up 1.5k over a while for a decent rifle and an optic, you shouldn't bother with an AR, and should just get a handgun and train with that. You're far more likely to actually use a handgun in self defense, and shooting handguns well takes more training and constant upkeep compared to rifle use.

              Already have a handgun

Then just train with that, and save for a quality rifle in the mean time. You know you'll still want a nice rifle, but if you buy the cheap trash that PSA produces, you're just kneecapping yourself financially while you then have to save up even longer for something good.

A barrel/bcg swap fixes the problem and you'll now have a spare barrel/bcg. Then you'll have plunked a few hundred dollars at a time into purchases rather than 1500+ all at one time.

plus nobody who's buying 500 dollar rifles has the money to spend on 6k rounds within a few years.

Or you could just save up for something good in the first place, and not enable shit companies like PSA to keep producing absolute trash.

A 400 dollar rifle and 1600 in ammo is gonna make him a better shooter than a 1600 dollar rifle and 400 in ammo. Plus once he's put $1600 of ammo down a 400 dollar rifle, he will have time to have saved up for a good rifle that he wont have to shoot up to get good.

nobody should own just 1 rifle anyways.

that GT vid you just watched is stupid cause it was full auto and suppressed, despite him claiming they only did 3 mags full auto at a time then let it cool down, thats still extremely harsh on the phosphate (lol, just get the PSA with the FN CHF CL barrels) compared to normal semi auto use. i have a pretty old psa 16 inch carbine gas upper that has around 8k rounds through it. still shoots every time with no issue and groups acceptably (around 2-3 moa). ive only ever had to replace the bolt once the extractor got weak around ~5k

                Anonymous

Not only do their barrels not last, they are constantly fricking up basic QC on literally everything they product. There are many, many reasons to hate PSA. I would know, I’ve owned 2 of those trash rods and both had distinct problems that a quality gun wouldn’t have.

                Anonymous

i know youre lying about your experiences because PSA has the best warranty in the business, any problems you might have will just get fixed by them for free, even if you arent the original purchaser, its no questions asked forever. who could possibly be mad about that. QC frickups are to be expected at this price range, especially so when you consider the sheer volume opf rifles that PSA puts out compared to a company like LMT that still also has QC issues in recent years, or FN that will void your warranty for aftermarket suppressor use. PSA is the greatest gun company around at the moment, its undeniable

You’re a homosexual if you think most of AR pricing is anything but brand name and gov contract mark up. Mapping inflation to silver, the M16 cost the US government roughly $1400 per rifle in 1972. So with all the advances in technology and whatnot and taking into account government contract mark up, it makes sense a modern, Everyman rifle would cost around $800 - $1000 before optic. Not $2500, not $3500. It’s a meme. I think it’s absurd to do anything aside from buying a DD or BCM upper and slapping it on a normal lower. Any PSA with a chrome barrel is a perfect rifle for a “militiaman / settler rifle” in the 1700’s / 1800’s sense, a BCM or DD upper is a nice step up. Anything outside of this is silly and wasteful imo. Far better off buying a gucci optic than anything.

                Anonymous

Sour grapes lmao. Just because you can’t afford a nice rifle doesn’t mean there’s not a reason they cost that much.
Even then, I’m just advocating for something like a BCM or a LE surplus Colt. I never said OP had to buy a Gucci rifle.
But let’s be honest. You aren’t going to shell out for a nice optic even if you buy / bought the shitty PSA. Because you’re a poorgay, and you lack impulse control to save for nice things.

I’d suggest looking through some Eotechs before you buy. I have an astigmatism as well, and they are just as funky as some red dots for me. However that’s a pretty individual issue, so definitely go to your LGS and look at some options.
Hard to go wrong with an ACOG and a top mounted red dot. Etched reticles are nice for astigmatisms.

the pros of buying bottom-level guns is that it turns into a very distasteful hording addiction where you keep buying very cheap guns just so you can have a 'collection'.

you will then pretend buying multiples of the same cheap gun are for altruistic reasons like "arming your neighborhood" during some nightmare(actually a dream because you want to kill someone legally) scenario involving Black folk or antifa.

just hold on to it and actually use it. To hell with trying to sell some AR upper or lower... who the frick buys that shit second-hand anyway. It's not hard to get it for yourself. Selling a collectable firearm is so much easier than selling some AR that could have god knows what wrong with it after some moron did something wrong while "modding" it, as they say. The second-hand AR market triggers my autism.

                >The second-hand AR market triggers my autism.
It indeed triggers mine too. I went to a gun store and despite selling quite a lot of milspec AR stuff and other gun stuff - even vintage parts - for $10 or often way less, I saw a muzzle device of some kind (IIRC it was a silencer adapter) and it was marked ~$100-130...it had previously been pinned and welded to something and the pin was still in it. IDGAF that it was still in its tube packaging, seriously what the frick? There are so many free float handguards out there that there has to be some moronicly cheap - yet the only ones I found were $125 at cheapest, used. I don't even need it to hold zero (I only use the flat top), just be light for hunting.

Anderson is garbo, all the PSA shills are actually correct you described PSA's whole ethos basically for existing in your post.

    >Get a palmetto state armory or a smith and wesson sport ii. They work fine
    This.

Something like an LMT or KAC will be a better gun (better design, better QC, tighter tolerances) but PSA is probably good enough for something like 99% of shooters.
Just force yourself to shoot the gun a lot in the first couple of weeks after you buy it. Poorer quality control of the cheap manufacturers means that sometimes lemons slip through and you'll want to identify this early so it's easy for you to get any issues sorted under warranty.

    >I'm poor and want an AR-15. It will not be shot very often or mistreated. What are the pros/cons of buying a rifle at sub $500 price points

Fit for purpose. Get a holosun or aimpoint red dot of some kind, or just practice irons. It will be adequate. Put the rest into ammo/kit and spare parts/servicing necessities.

      >holosun
don't listen to this guy, the attachment screw has to be loctited to stay in place(negating the whole purpose of a rail) and turning on/off the powered mode is non-intuitive. There are many red dots out there with much more reasonable attachment and operation. Pick something with only one knob to turn. No punching in magic patterns on a keypad like on Holosun. My most favored dot is Aimpoint PRO(yes I'm poor), but there are many more options out there.

PSA really is the king of budget rifles. You can get cheaper, but you'll start running into various real problems such as unreliable quality control, lower accuracy, less durability, etc. PSA rifles are just all-around solid while being near the bottom of the price range. Get one of those, get a $100 Sig or Holosun red dot, get a few magpul pmags, and you'll be set for basically forever

This one might be more recent. They should be like $17-20 (aluminum) and $11-15 (Gen 2 Pmag) max.

This plus a rear sight and a mag bundle will have you in at 500 bucks.

PSA is obviously the way to go. In the future you can upgrade to a Sabre or premium lower with an FN barrel. Or even a BCM. But for home defense or general ownership on a budget, anyone who says anything except PSA is just a hater, larper, or general homosexual

If you want a piston gun, a Bren 2 is cheaper, and a better gun than the worst version of the 416. If you desperately want a 416, then you'll have to start with that and then build it out with the proper parts.

I have 2 different PSA rifles (midlength 16 inch premium with FN chrome barrel, and a carbine 10.5 with the normal nitride) as well as having built out several other rifles for friends and family.
None of them have had QC issues, reliability problems, or any other headaches.
My 2 rifles have had close to 10k rounds each and after my last range day we grouped the 2. 16 inch was a .89 MOA at 100 yards, and the 10.5 was a 2 at the same distance using 62 grain Winchester green tip.
I built the 16 for about $1000, including the optic. Don't listen to the dumbfricks on this forum who all have guns that have never been shot, they collect guns for the same reason they collect Funko pops.
