Tangentially related: what's the hardest part of a Sam complex to replace, the radars, command vehicle or TEL?

Definitely the radar. Lots of very expensive and sensitive components, losing it basically means that the entire array is dead in the water.

Imagine you had to detect 300 targets and get a weapons-grade track on 30 simultaneously, all ranging from 500 ft AGL from 10 miles away to 35,000 ft at 250 miles away, while also rejecting clutter, trying to reject jamming signals, etc.
As tech advanced in ways to make radar cheaper, the tech to fool radars also developed so you need all sorts of bells and whistles inside those babies to handle the complex battlespace. You can't be looking for a target by looking at an oscilloscope and rotating dials to tune the thing like it's the Battle of Britain.

The transmit receive modules are expensive semiconductor devices. They spend a lot of power, and age fast so they need to be serviced and replaced. They are characterized calibrated and certified coming out of the factory, it takes a lot of time to do so which drives up the cost. Non solid state devices like klystrons are even more fickle. The front end itself is a massive engineering challenge.
The electromagnetic emissions they produce have to travel through waveguides that are very precisely engineered to maintain signal integrity, such that they don't result in losses or reflections (think echoes). The received signals are processed through dedicated and very precise equipment. A lot of high speed data conversion needs to happen; electromagnetic waves you shoot out come back and have to be turned into something a computer and/or a human can understand. The data converter will digitize the received signal, perform complex mathematical operations on it called a Fourier transform, at least three times to obtain range velocity and angle to create a radar "cube". This is generated for each receive unit, if you have 1000 receive units and 10 bit data conversion (likely higher, since you want a good signal to noise and distortion ratio) that's 10^12 (million times million) bits of data each cycle. Oh these data converters are also calibrated and characterized with high costs as described above, with additional cost.
You are doing this data transfer maybe a hundred thousand times a second, so you need a very large communications backbone just to take this data from the data converters to your computer which will do it's magic. It also means a lot of power is used up, which means heat, which means a dedicated heat removal system. For everything up to and including the transmit receive elements, the data converters, and the comm switches.
You then need to house all this in a ruggedized platform with power cooling etc. It all adds up rapidly

Excellent effortposting, Anon, and well-written as an explanation.
Since you seem to know a lot on the topic: is there also a hardware component to more advanced applications like radar counter-countermeasures? I know that a lot of the current military-grade stuff ignores older defenses like chaff, but I have no idea if that’s all done in software or not.

NTA but a lot of that isn't in the front end of the radar but the back end data processing. Hardware improvements in radars have mostly been with power and signal generation. Anon mentioned klystrons, those are old school vacuum tube like devices meant to generate the signal. Modern radars like the AESA in an F-35 use GaN MOSFETs. They do the same job but waste less power, make less heat and are more reliable. On the back end its all about signal processing and then data processing of that cleaned up signal. There's a lot of secret sauce involved but if the quality of your software is good then throwing more compute power at the problem makes it more betterer.

I threw in the kly's for an off-handed remark, and frankly ran out of space to get into the signal processing. Which I suppose would be the least expensive part in terms of hardware cost, but the pivotal point nonetheless. Kalman filtering to paint a probabilistic picture based on the data cubes you receive has been the center focus of radar signal processing and the processing algorithm will contribute to the majority of jamming rejection.
Although hardware wise advanced materials like GaN (particularly the material science engineering of the substrate to handle the power) kicked up the performances to next level HEMT would be a better term than MOSFET for these guys. Before GaN GaAs and even non solid state stuff as mentioned before have been kicking around for so long. I haven't been around the block during that time though.

Yeah I didn't take it you meant they were still in common use. Although some of those older soviet systems Russia is fielding may still them for all I know. NTA but:

              >is there also a hardware component to more advanced applications like radar counter-countermeasures
Yeah, like conformal antenna embedded into the aircraft skin for 360 degree coverage and ECM operation. They're going to share similar components to radar.
              >I know that a lot of the current military-grade stuff ignores older defenses like chaff, but I have no idea if that’s all done in software or not.
Pretty much. It's all software setting in the guidance section itself that allows it to defeat counter-measures.

tl;dr No, just an unwarranted sense of importance.

The S-400 is a very capable AD system and the Turks were always planning on utilizing their western connections to upgrade the electronics that were subpar. Erdogan thought that the Americans were just overreacting and tried to call a bluff that wasn't a bluff. Really just a funny self own. Erdogan really was picturing himself as a transcontinental power broker and the F-35 pull was a very public ego check.

All of this could have been avoided if the Turks weren't letting the Russians maintain the systems and if they loaned one on the sly to US FME programs. But, they didn't do either and are now stuck with a subpar AD system and no F-35s.

seems like they're taking out s400 specifically to have freedom of operations in the future.

also when the f16s arrive what makes you think the s400s won't be take out at higher rates they likely will give them a shitton of harms and malds, along with more atacams.

                >207 aircraft in 2021
All airforces in the world have only a fraction of their on-paper park air ready at any given time. Mostly due to maintenance requirements.

The biggest hurdle for Ukraine's airforce was unironically WHEELS and TYRES. The engines they can rebuild themselves, but the rubber assembly lines are soviet Losstech that were produced in he -stans. There's a funny story about an old man who "found" some jet tyres in his personal garage at the start of the war, and let the AFU know about them. The tyres were given VIP seats on a PASSANGER train by the local security forces to get where they needed to go, when otherwise the trains were for evacuation purposes only. You had baby strollers right next to military rubber.

The “integration of western munitions” is quite real. HARM, AMRAAM, and others are designed around the assumption of the full Western sensor pack, particularly around the better onboard radar. They can’t be used to their full potential without those systems.

The actual reason is that Ukraine needs an air force upgrade that frees their pilots from the Soviet junk they've had to make do with (note: the Ukrainian air force has taken heavy losses primarily because it's had to make do with Soviet junk).

my zigga, what do you think it means when one side is able to effortlessly show us footage of ziggers dying en-masse (their equipment too) in all sorts of hilarious ways when you guys struggle to show any visually confirmed ukrainian losses, because that's what it is, visual confirmation of what's happening on the battlefield.
it's really telling that russia is losing because when you guys actually have something noteworthy you take a massive shill brigade here and mass-spam it for multiple days.
almost as if a ukranian loss is notable and a russian one is so common that it's brushed off and threads about them don't even reach bump limit.
                >-i-it's c-censorship, ultra AI-zelenskyyyyybots delete my post with a dead ukrainian in it one millisecond after i post it its the truth!!!
ok, but whenever you guys actually have something to show us, it suddenly isn't censored instantly anymore and i can actually see it?
idk why you guys keep using that argument, you're just digging a deeper hole for yourselves.
                >STOP SHOWING US PROOF OF RUSSIA LOSING ITS NOT FAIR WE DON'T HAVE NEARLY AS MUCH PROOF OF UKRAINE LOSING.

Ehh, not true for everything, but still true for a lot of things. Shells and tanks, Ukraine has to wait for America to build new ones. "send new stuff, don't empty the horde at home" has been a policy for a lot of things, for a long time for America, going back at least to the Korean war.

Of course the initial ATACAMs Ukraine got were expired ones.

if only. US is run by a senile old man and a bunch of aging israelites larping as grey cardinals
100% ownership of media and blatant censorship on socials makes it look like everything goes their way but in reality US is in steady decline since it "won" the Cold War. The only "wins" after that are against former puppet Saddam and against former puppet Osama. It took 20 years and 2,3 trillions to kill Osama, after he bombed the fricking Pentagon. This is just the usual double standard in equipment appraisals:
          >Patriot debuts to lukewarm reception in 1980s = complete waste of taxpayer dollars, no chance it could ever be improved, just surrender to Saddam and the USSR now
          >S-400 takes out multiple Russian airframes then gets b***hslapped by 30 year old about-to-be-decommissioned missile = just some teething issues on a promising technology, we can fix it with some minor modifications like replacing literally every component, surely one of them will get a lucky hit on an F-16 one day and redeem the whole project
It’s like this with everything: any U.S. system with less than 100% success rate is immediately classed as overpriced junk. 3000 visually confirmed Russian tank losses? Well, the Abram and Bradley aren’t literally indestructible, xaxaxaxaxa!

NTA but this is extremely false.
Plenty of people on this board and elsewhere made the point that the frickery with Patriots during Desert Storm was a result of software gremlins, with the issues being sorted not long after the war.
People who made this point here and elsewhere were *very* often mocked by people like you as well as vatnoids and other people who thought that shitting on Patriot whilst dickriding "muh SOVIET IADS" with zero critical thought made them seem and sound more credible.

It's like someone in the thread earlier noted.
When America has teething issues in a new system, it's fashionable to trash it as an utter waste and failure. Thirdies fail, then it's just teething problems, pwease understand.
I blame Chomsky-tier boomers for starting the weird Western - but most specifically American - trend of smearing feces upon all things American at any chance in the belief it makes them look more credible, objective, and "SmArT."
Same mentality will prevent them from simply checking if their super smart hot-takes have even aged well, so they'll repeat the smart-sounding internalized nonsense literally *decades* after.

None of that is anywhere near as moronic and annoying as them trying to memory-hole their
                >"oh, Patriot is a frick. Is of beings poor murica attempt at matching Soviet/Russian SAM dominance"
                circle-jerk.

Not me. Just a skim through the wikipedia page shows the growing pains of using Patriot as an ABM system were easily fixable, and the PAC-3 was tested against a discarded Pershing II MARV back in 2000.

Basically it was really easy for information to completely go under the radar and people typically huffed a bunch of hopium to convince themselves the Patriot was worth anything. The actual publicly available data was reassuring. Very few reported on it.

    That's a 96L6-TsP radar of the S-350, not a 96L6E of the S-400.
That's especially sad and 10x fricking funnier considering the 96L6-TsP was specifically upgraded to track ballistic targets like ATACMS lmfao.

        And

Eeeeh 96L6-TsP isn't solely a S-350 component, it can plug into other systems, hell the Russians used to talk about how it'd be part of S-500.
        [...]
Clearly S-300P/400 TEL, combined with the radar and command post I think the Ukrainians just hit the division level component of a S-400.

beat me by 2 minutes, the 96L6-TsP is a component of the S-500, so this is *technically* the first loss of an S-500 component. Of course the rest of the S-500 battery obviously wasn't attached, the 96L6-TsP was attached to this presumably S-400 battery, can't get a good view of the TEL's to distinguish whether they're S-300 or S-400.

I think the strangest part of all this is that they set up this battery in Mospyne, 40km from the front line. Even stranger is that Ukraine decided not to use a volley of 6 - 12 M30A1 GMLRS. Guess they REALLY wanted that grid square wiped with ATACMS' M74's, but hey it worked.

maybe they believed the S-400 would be tuned to ballistic missiles? ATACMS isn't really ballistic.

It's really weird that russia is this full on authoritarian regime yet almost every time something valuable is hit, we get photos and often videos too, like they are completely incapable of censorship around the front line. Like there's zero control over information, stuff leaks all the time, people film stuff with their private phones and you can see other military personnel just ignoring it, what the frick.

      It's the
      >IF ONLY THE TSAR KNEW
effect. To cope with the humiliating losses they've taken and the fact that they haven't won yet, many ground-level Russians sincerely believe that Russia is fighting with one hand tied behind its back. This results in people like Prigozhin (RIP) or Andrey Morozov (RIP) speaking very frankly about the state of things at the front, and even posting visual proof of losses, because

Tivaz Artillery posted this image yesterday on their Telegram, shows a SAM site going nuclear. Looks like they're probably gonna drop the ATACMS strike footage at some point (with their usual cancer editing sadly). Either way, hyped for when they drop it, this is gonna be the first combat footage of an ATACMS strike on an air defense battery.

there's no genuine respect for authority in russian society, only whatever respect can be engendered through terror. Simply put, nobody believes there's a good reason behind the things their superiors tell them, and they don't actually respect them, so when the superiors aren't around to frighten them into behaving they just do whatever they want.

does anyone remember the syrian civil war and when turkey entered the fight and suddenly we had tons of footage of syrian, russian-made AD systems like TOR, BUK etc. getting blown up by second class drones? yeah, that was the time the show was basically over
the cope back then was, yeah but s-300...
or how proud ziggers back then were about possibly a s-400 now being deployed in russias latakia base and basically making the whole eastern mediterranean air space a no-go zone
lol, the fact how little NATO responded to that should have been telling 10 years ago already
