>As ukraine comes under mounting pressure on the battlefield, Europe is desperately scrambling to boost its puny production of artillery shells and missiles. In January the EU admitted that it had fallen well short of its pledge to provide Ukraine with one million shells by March 2024. On March 15th it allocated €500m ($542m) to ramp up production. But the biggest bottleneck is something that was an afterthought until recently: a shortage of explosives.
>The scheme in question is called the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (asap), and three-quarters of the funding, or some €372m, will be lavished on manufacturers of things that go boom. Europe needs bushels of combustibles to reach its target of producing 2m shells a year by the end of 2025. Each artillery shell is crammed with 10.8kg of a high-explosive such as tnt, hmx or rdx. Additional propellant charges are also needed to hurl the rounds over tens of kilometres. Other munitions require even larger amounts: the high-explosive warhead on a Storm Shadow missile, for example, weighs around 450kg. The trouble is that explosive makers are unsure that production can be cranked up and fear that the quirks of the industry will hamper the surge that Ukraine needs to remain competitive on the battlefield.
So even the production of explosives got moved overseas?:

    Yep.

"Russian enterprises are now producing artillery shells three times faster and at a quarter of the cost compared to the United States and European Union countries, Sky News reports, citing Bain Consulting Company analysis.

Despite Ukraine's Western allies' larger combined economies, they are currently lagging behind Russia in shell production rates.

Bain forecasts indicate that in 2024, Russia will produce approximately 4.5 million artillery shells, whereas the EU and the USA together will produce around 1.3 million.

Additionally, Russian 152-millimeter shells are significantly cheaper to produce than the Western 155-millimeter versions."

All Western media ever does is hand-wring about what extra needs to be done to stop Russia from winning, and all Russia media reports is that their seven-foot soldiers are currently laughing their way through Ukraine, sausages in hand, and somehow it's been in a stalemate for two years. Two weeks has been a Russian catchphrase since before this operation started.

Russia has the right idea in using its immigrants in costly assaults at least. I don't see western immigrant populations contributing anything in a war effort. In fact going of their unconditional support of Palestine and anything opposed to the west they will likely be a major 5th column

              Anonymous

I disagree on all counts - using immigrants as cannon fodder is both morally contemptible (a nation should fight its' own wars) and results in said immigrant population having a large contingent of disgruntled combat veterans and even more grudges against the host population. I'm not a big fan of israel but that's neither here nor there; either way the third worlders living in the West ARE a fifth column and never should have been let it.

    >Spain has pledged to provide military equipment to Ukraine worth 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) this year under a bilateral agreement signed on Monday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid.
    >El Pais newspaper reported earlier on Monday that Spain would commit to send Ukraine a dozen U.S.-made Patriot anti-aircraft missiles and 19 second-hand German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks, as well as other Spanish-made weapons such as anti-drone gear and ammunition.

    >Russia's defense industrial base (DIB) will reportedly manufacture and refurbish three times as many artillery shells as the West will produce in 2024, although Russian shells reportedly suffer from quality-control issues and Ukrainian artillery is reportedly more precise than Russian artillery.
    >A Ukrainian artillery battery commander operating in northern Kharkiv Oblast told Sky News that Russian forces operating in this area have a five-to-one artillery shell advantage but noted that Ukrainian forces can "completely destroy" a target using one to three shells. Ukrainian and Western officials and several Russian milbloggers previously stated that Ukrainian artillery is more precise than Russian artillery despite the fact that Russian artillery supplies greatly outnumber those of Ukrainian forces.[12] Russian milbloggers recently complained that the amount of gunpowder in Russian artillery shells widely varies, causing artillery systems to perform inconsistently.[13] The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) reported in March that Russia currently has about three million rounds of old artillery ammunition in its stockpiles, but that much of it is in poor condition.[14] RUSI and other Western analysts also assessed that Russia’s current domestic ammunition production is not sufficient for its war in Ukraine, so Russia will likely continue relying on supplies from partners.[15] Ukraine's Main Military Intelligence Deputy Chief Major General Vadym Skibitskyi reported in February that Russia had imported about 1.5 million rounds of ammunition from North Korea, but that about half of the munitions did not function and the other half required restoration or inspection before use.[16]
TL;DR: the Russians have more shells, but they're borderline useless. Also, might not be as cheap as claimed as Purchasing Power Parity might not have been accounted for.

Europe should learn from Vietnam, none of the EU c**ts bother to set up production lines to produce fuze, shell, propellant for their arty. Only Vietnam did because they went to war and understand how fast you burn thru your munitions reserve. If that was considered as terrible then I don't know how you see EU c**ts that are now scrambling to increase their production capability for their arty.

The conflict was not projected to be artillery slugging over trenches, but thousands of tanks rushing with rapid advances and even beyond soviet-tier loss and disregard of life. And then the fireballs would start as soon as one side thought I'd be funny to try.
As an European, I rejoice at the fact we might live to see Fortress Europe now that everyone decided that rearming good, migrants and Russian dependence bad.

In Bulgaria we had a lot stocked, and we are currently selling a lot to Ukraine, as we reopened I think two of our cold war production lines.
