Armata going to Ukraine

It looks like the Armata may, in fact, enter service by the end of the year after all.

They can't risk actual testing in the field in case Ukraine blows it up and posts it on twitter. No country would buy it.

Well, the Russian MoD wasn’t interested in it originally for whatever reason — probably didn’t meet their standards for reliability/ wasn’t worth the cost etc. The MIC and export company are state-run so the government pretended to acquire it for several years likely to entice international buyers. A few years back the MoD basically said they weren’t interested. Last year there was news of it conducting testing in Ukraine but after that no news at all. Now this. It’s believable because they’ve been flogging their MIC like crazy so they’ve very likely been working on making the Armata into something the MoD will accept — or are being made to accept it in whatever state it is in now. But the fact that it’s supposedly undergoing further trails means that it hasn’t been abandoned and maybe we will indeed see this thing in Ukraine running over a mine and FPV dropping a grenade inside an open hatch after it’s been abandoned like every other tank this war.

      Anonymous

They did spend 10 years and about 300bil trying to make the fricking thing, it did technically get 'accepted' by the MOD but at 5-6mil apiece they basically said 'nah its too expensive and T-90 is fine'
So its been stuck in some kind of fricking madhouse of Design-MIC-MOD circular arsehole kicking adventure for a decade and I personally think that if they can't make a tank in that kind of time it was fricked from the start. Sure did buy a lot of dachas and yachts with it though

I think the T-14 seemed to be bolted up with every meme-system they could think up ranging from IR dazzlers, jammers, new gun, new optics from old French optics, all the rubbish about unmanned autoloading turrets... It reeks of what is commonly known as 'bloat' were someone just keeps trying to engineer their way into a contract with more shit, more costs and ends up at the end with a Homer car at the end full of crap that doesn't work, no one asked for and blew the budget into the 8th dimension

          >We could take an existing model, do an iterative improvement, maybe scale it up a bit and increase the armor, give it decent thermals and a conventional diesel engine (just not one that's a derivative of a 1930s design), and produce a relatively affordable design we could build to replace our tens of thousands of obsolete and obsolescent tanks
          >OR we could trying skipping three generations ahead by throwing every piece of wunderwaffe garbage we can think of into a giant pile which we could only afford if petroleum reaches $200/barrel BUT it'd have a lot of propaganda value
Thank god authoritarian regimes are inherently self-limiting.

And another thing — tanks are all but worthless in this war. Regardless of being an ancient Soviet shitbox or a modern Western tank, they all don’t survive contact. They’re used in a solo fire-support role when they’re not assaulting, and the battlefield is littered with them running over mines and abandoned or hit with the swarming mess of anti-tank threats — even old Soviet ATGMs are knocking stuff out with apparently no hope of survival. FPV operators are skilled enough now to fly RPGs under cages and around to hit weak points and Russians’ various EW attempts haven’t completely stopped the threat. And even if their EW got to the point that FPVs are off the battlefield they’ll still get nuked by all the ATGMs and various top-attack munitions filling the battlespace. Mines make even large-scale assaults a bust. So I wonder WHY the Russians are nothing with a new tank that will just die like all the rest? The only benefit that the Armata will truly have over the T-90M and T-72B3 is that it should do a much better job of protecting the crew from instant death.

      Anonymous

      very much this.

people who don't understand that a tank is just a bulletproof machine gun / cannon that can drive over bad terrain don't get it. the same people who thought leopard 2 and abrams were going to be tearing shit up and dueling t-72s to death

It's not like it has been very different through the years since 2015 thanks to armatard and the likes. The thing could have gotten a new patch of paint on a small part of it and we would had three or five threads about it telling everyone how this is a total game changer and how the west has nothing in comparison.
