Not fresh out of storage. I am more curious why the break out the good stuff now, and hand it over to likely barely trained mercs on top of that.

Soviets have been storing a fraction of the equipment straight from factory into strategic reserves. Now that russians have lost 2k+ tanks they are running off combat ready hardware and cracking open the reserves.

it's an outdated t-90, not the good stuff. it's an early to mid 90s variant with no upgrades

      it's not any better than a t-72b from the early 90s and it's worse than a t-72b2 or b3

How is it worse? Targeting systems? Communication systems? Worse ERA?

          Anonymous

practically just about everything is worse.

the FCS is significantly worse, the armor is a bit thinner, its ERA is kontakt-5, same as the t-72b, instead of relikt, the gun has much worse barrel life, it lacks the IR dazzlers, it has a weaker engine and it has an older autoloader that's more prone to accidents

just curious, do tanks (on either side) make use of IR dazzlers (or smoke launchers) in the Ukraine?

Other variants of T-90 do. The system is called the Shtora

I'm pretty sure this is two T-72s popping smoke, but they could just be getting fricked up by a BTR

maybe they do, but you can see fires happen shortly after.

T-90 was intended as the "cheap tank" in conjunction with T-80 as the "premium tank," (as an "upgrade" to the T-72, which was the cost reduced and simplified
          counterpart to the T-64).
and so it's an "improved" (cost reduced further) version of T-72.

Of course, because of the death of the russian economy of the 90s, it became the main tank of russia while T-80 was in the background getting some upgrades and developments, and a bunch of design evolutions that kinda just sat around until they meandered over to the T-14.

just curious, do tanks (on either side) make use of IR dazzlers (or smoke launchers) in the Ukraine?

Other variants of T-90 do. The system is called the Shtora

To my knowledge Shtora isn't actually used that often with one or both of the dazzlers removed because they don't impact that many ATGM systems and in return introduce a nice big weak spot around the gun with the original mounting design.

We only really see videos of Russian tanks where they're dying. If the IRCM works and decoys the missile the video isn't going to get posted which makes it seem like the countermeasures aren't getting deployed.

Shtora might not fool Javelins but there are tens of thousands of anti-tank weapons in Ukraine and some of them are bound to get dazzled by the vatnik redeyes.

            Something about survivorship bias.

              Anonymous

              >some of them are bound to get dazzled by the vatnik redeyes.

You're assuming the system works? I've read that it overheats only after a few minutes of use, and to be effective, it would have to be on at all times in the combat zone.

Furthermore, this garbage does not detect the launch, so the crew would have to be either extremely lucky to spot the ATGM launch (never happens) or be lucky enough for their enemy to use a laser range finder on the tank because Shtora has a passive laser warning receiver, which would alert the crew they are being targeted.

It's a nearly useless system against older ATGMs, and does nothing against stuff like Javelin, Spike, NLAW etc.

Khokhlut, your main problem is that you don't understand how Russians burn down. You have heard enough of Western experts, but the problem with Western experts is that they only know Western battle tactics.
These are two fundamentally different views. The Western recommendation chose to send the most experienced, equipped and trained fighters to the vanguard. Elite. While the rear guard consisted of inexperienced suckers with funny equipment. This is how the West fights. And the collapse of the vanguard for them means the collapse of the army. Because the elite fell, the best equipment and equipment were fricked up. Western register count on one line of defense. Strong and impenetrable, but if it crumbled, it means collapse.

The Russian doctrine implies many lines of defense, including deceptive lines of defense. And the vanguard put the most inexperienced fighters because a fighter who passed through the vanguard and survived becomes an elite veteran who has proven in practice his superiority over everyone and therefore he alone is worth a dozen Western fighters. This is done in order to weed out the wheat from the chaff and go through hardening with fire.
Therefore, the rearguard of our army consists of a real elite with years of combat experience and an innate talent to defend the homeland. The deceptive line of defense, on the other hand, exists to lure the enemy’s artillery to striking distances so that they move their forces and fall under a barrage of hellfire from pre-prepared positions.

Simply put, Khokhlut, your Pendos instructors are fricking you when they say that you have a chance. Because you have not even encountered the REAL Russian army, with its most experienced fighters, who will not leave you even a wet spot.

Apparently that tank was captured a while ago and since IIRC the barrel was damaged the Ukrainians most likely used the ERA for other tanks.
There's a video on YT explaining it and it doesn't sound like vatnik propaganda - hard to know with all the desinformation.

                Anonymous

Yeah but even if that were the case, chances are only the front chassis armor had any real ERA to begin with, which is still dismal considering top attack ATGMs are the most prominent danger to the russian tanks being fielded in this war

T-80BVM (same tank pic related number 659) that was captured back in Feb/March only to have a video of it appear in August about how it had no ERA in it's cassettes when it has clearly been stripped of everything including gunsights by the Ukrainians and then posted a propoganda video

ERA with explosives is not used in storage or peacetime, they "should" be fitted with the blocks before hitting the fronts. Shtora doesn't actually work against modern missiles so they might just not bother with it even with T-90A's if its not already mounted.

some pro-russian tg said its export T-90S for india, clues are bigger corner era blocks instead of "shtora" and placement of "tucha" smoke launcher. that shit is desperate if they really grab export tanks which arent delivered yet to replace losses

supposedly they are bringing in russian troops from the *stans countries. bringing in these t90s isnt some power move. it just shows they are desperate for equipment. it really doesnt increase their attack power that much and hurts logistics

Might be T-90A really just without the Shtora projectors because they're and expensive boondoggle that doesn't actually do anything against the threats in Ukraine so they'll replace it with an extra block of ERA
May still have the laser warning system from Shtora, like Iraq and Turkmenistan's T-90S, or not have it at all, like India and Uganda's T-90S

Don't know about Russia but Western tanks on parade use rubber lined tracks(some also use this in combat zones because it's easier on the crew). They still trash roads though.
