          Anonymous

Well it's kinda old but still in use, it's around 550 RPM per cannon.
more modern stuff like mantis gets 1000 RPM out of a single one.
otherwise, they are all very similar.

But they only burst fire in normal conditions like 36 shells (but 2 tanks/gun emplacements fire at the same time for redundancy)

Shit imagine that with a proper computer tracking system that can predict leads on fast moving aircraft.

they can accept data link from a different radar station AFAIK but still old shit

Given how the sheer rumour of American volunteers sends Russians into panic, I could imagine that rumours of the space age Nazi spaags in the region scared off Russian pilots as well.

Sad jokes aside, wouldn't it be more efficient to just do this, with a newer AA cannon on the PUMA? SPAAGs are cool but I rarely see them used for anything other than firesupport to the ground, and even in this conflict it looks like MANPADs have been adequate for SHORAD most of the time.

it's basically what the US has done for SHORAD, since we can't have nice things

"Why would we need shorad, we have the air force! they might get pissy if the army shoots planes down, god forbid."

I'm bitter we never got the M247. It wasn't that bad, they eventually fixed the issues, right in time for them to cancel it.

                Anonymous

Wiesel would be neat, but I wonder about how much ammo you could stow and how limited the armaments size would be
Otherwise, yeah it'd actually be hilarious as SHORAD because of how easy it would be to conceal on top of being hilariously mobile.

                Anonymous

yeah ammo storage would be a problem

Germany is busy trying to fix its armed forces and doesn't have the luxury of just being able to send off obsolete USSR shit while suffering the most from the consequences of sending things at all.
I'm surprised they sent anything at all and it's not like they sent little, they sent a lot more than most, especially since they have a lot more reasons notto han anybody else.
How much would enough even be? Is there an amount anybody can point to or is enough only reached when people stop whining about it not being enough?
Because that's never going to happen. Why would they? It would only be to the disadvantage of Ukraine, whether it's true or not.

I imagine the best way to do it would be to settle on one type (say Leo 2) and try to scrape together a 100 or whatever number makes sense from all the countries that operate it in EU/NATO, since giving away a sensible amount seems to be too much for Germany alone. That would also shut up Scholz's "no going at it alone" meme.

IMHO this is why Lep 2 makes sense as western MBT for Ukraine (rather than Abrams), diffuse responsibility for supply and training. Harder for Russia to retaliate when a dozen countries are supplying, plus American tank makes it easier for Russia to propagandize their losing to the US not Ukraine with broad foreign support.

They're panicking, they don't want Ukraine and other neighbors to be in the Anglosphere. That'd mean the UK and US would basically take Russia's place as the energy dictators to Germany and France. Hence the big push by politicians for last-minute louie support so postwar construction rights will be a bit easier to negotiate for.

            >UK ain't exporting energy, dumbass.

70% of the UK's gas is going to the EU right now. Of the 30% going to the UK, much of it is going to fire the gas power stations what we pretty much never need outside of winter in order produce extra electricity which is mostly going to France due to their gimped nuclear generation atm. we were sending like 30GW of electricity to Europe the other day.

That's before you factor in our LNG terminals and excess pipeline capacity to benelux/germany. Europe has been utterly dependent on our LNG terminals because they have next to no spare capacity in Spain and France to make up for the extra German demand.

Europe would be fricked without us, but that's fine because we're trying to help. The problem is unless we get something on paper very soon, we need to start looking after ourselves. We have always exported most of our gas to Europe in the summer because Europe has loads of storage capacity (countries with no production usually spend lots of storage) we then buy stored gas back from Europe in the winter a slight premium (but this is usually less than the cost of us storing it ourselves. Now Euope has been struggling to fill it's winter sotrage, so we may get to a point in winter where they decide not to sell to us anymore. Hopefully an agreement is put in place where that isn't an issue, but if not the UK is turning off the natural gas too and storing it's own and possibly redirecting the LNG in the winter.

It's clear whats in everyone's interests, it just requires the EU to accept that it needs the UK.

I mean, this really doesn't indicate they've lost their influence/empire(?) it just indicates that they aren't the largest trading partner anymore. They're still a huge chunk of trade from all of those nations, and because of the nature of growing economies, a smaller percentage of a larger pie means they're probably making more money in absolute terms today than they were in 2000.

More trade power means more diplomatic power. China's neo colonialism has been pretty successful, particularly because they've been buying up all the infrastructure and when they couldn't because it's illegal they just loaned them money to build new infrastructure with the new infrastructure as the collateral of the loan the Black folk could obviously never pay back.
Nogs don't pay, China owns the pipes, highways, electricity grid.

                >playing the Neo-Colonialism game
The only winning move is not to play. You can't control a bunch of black and brown people to your own benefit. Best you can get is preferential treatment in trade deals, but the importance of that is really minor. And keeping canada and australia/nz under the thumb just wasn't going to happen, they have different strategic interests and no desire to be more than allied with the uk.
The simple fact is, brits and especially english got dealt a great hand those past couple centuries and got used to having power over other nations. Now the hand is spent and they're just one among equals. And they've yet to come to terms with it.

Better, actually. It has a 2-plane stabilizer like a normal Leopard, so it can engage targets while the armor column is moving, unlike those 9k330s Tors that got rekt by Bayraktar because they were doing a road march.
It also has enough armor to resist artillery barrage better than most SHORAD platforms. It's made to protect the tip of the armored spear.

reminder you can slap that turret on everything. there have been tests on containers, turrets and also the Piranha apc. so putting that on a leopard hull is probably eez

I'd like some enlongated vehicle with twin turrets and a radar in the middle.
          Like a land battleship.

But why? The platform is at the end of its lifecycle and up until recently, AAA had no useful application.
Putting it on platforms that will remain in service for 30 years is the better move.

What makes the Gepard superior to the Tunguska? The difference between 30 and 35mm seems minor and the Tunguska has missiles.

Gepard can also mount missiles with a few minor tweaks, and the 35 mm guns can fire programmable flak shells.
In fact, one of the early hiccups was that the combat firmware couldn't recognize the RFID of newer NAMMO rounds, and didn't program them correctly, until it got an update.

That looks like Southeast US, training area most likely. The takeout and pepsi can make it feel very American too

I could see myself doing it in a drunk enough mood without a stark reminder
And you may not necessarily trust a random stranger on the internet but take it from me the average soldier is even worse than me when drunk.

You all thought I was crazy for saying AAA would be effective in this theater. Every single aircraft flies at nearly ground level. The Gepard was BUILT for this shit.
