Buying a tool you use or fills a safety requirement is very practical.
Buying tons of them, and adding tons of accessories moving from one to another is just consuming.
You can be stuck in a consumerism loop.

Why not? I have a DAO Beretta pico I could probably do minute-of-squirrel with at 10-15 yards.

You could also get into trapping. That would get you 3 yard shots all day long

I'd argue that even those who hunt are consoomers unless they actually do it to survive.
hunting is not a necessity in the modern world, it's a hobby just like fishing is. there's no functional difference between collecting guns and collecting cars/shoes/keyboards/guitars/anything else that can be mass-consoomed.

        Anonymous

There is a difference in that it is a sport and the quality of meat.
The romanticized minimalist isn't really about never leaving your house except to work and only eating chicken breast and vegetables with water. It's more so to do with not collecting junk or things you don't really use often. Owning a soccer ball to play at the park isn't being a consoomer.

This. If you don't own guns then you're basically a woman. Actually, you're even less than a woman since a lot of women do own guns these days. A man who doesn't own guns is less than human, because he has no human rights without a means to protect them. A man without a gun can be compelled to do anything by a man with a gun. There's something inherently disgusting and subhuman about being a nogunz.

Buying guns instead of paying the pharma israelites is based though. These threads are always made by seething poorgays who are jealous of people with more than them. If you are actually into guns as a hobby rather than just being a tourist, you will eventually accumulate a lot of them. Even if you only buy yourself one new gun for your birthday and one for Christmas (so two guns per year), and never sell any, you will have become what is considered a "super gun owner" after only four years of collecting.

Let people like things. I like to buy new guns even though the "category" is occupied by two or three guns already, but I can't really get why people have massive guitar collections. I'm not going to dump on them for it, I just don't understand the appeal, and they might not understand why people like owning so many guns. We're on this earth for such a short time, so I'm not going to spend any of it hating on what other people like. If it puts a smile on your face, it's worth it.

    Not really.
I have about 20 guns, but I only regularly shoot 4 of them. Most hasguns on here are about the same from what I've seen. Realistically, a man only needs 4 guns at most; a shotgun, hunting rifle, an AR or equivalent, and pistol. Don't even really need the hunting rifle or shotgun if you don't hunt, so now you're down to 2. Anything beyond that is simply because you want it. I've met people with bigger collections that me who pretend that every gun they have has some practical purpose, but they don't. Some other guys like to say that they're investments, but they usually just accumulate more guns and never sell any off. I used to be like this.
All that said, a lot of guys who claim that guns are just tools are also wrong. Weapons have never been regarded as mere tools.

Buying more than you need for your own purposes of anything is a bad idea and generally gay. It makes sense to buy multiple guns if each one has a specific and well-defined role, but if you're buying stuff just to have it then that's falling for the advertizing and other propaganda. The constant fanboying threads are indicative of this (fanboying is gay, if you didn't know), as are the debate threads over what type of pistol is what and how someone is lame for not liking [INSERT PISTOL HERE]. Yes, people have always argued over brands and technology, but the people who do it often just have nothing else going on for them or are stupid/shortsighted to the point where they think minmaxing their experience with firearms instead of getting good with a couple and calling it a day is helping them.

It's important to remember that /k/ and other boards are great at goading people into thinking that there's a specific "PrepHole approved" mindset when it comes to buying and using guns, computers, cars, etc, and making said people feel as if the hashed out arguments, buying guides, and shitflinging isn't simply being a consumer fanboy because it's PrepHole and PrepHole would nevar be like that.

tl;dr buy what you need and no more

It took me a while to realize but I think I have the same perspective of "guns are tools" types but for cars. What I wonder is, if you're not deeply interested in guns why are you here? Be akin to me going to PrepHole and flipping shit over people wasting time and money on dumb project cars. Yes I find that stupid but they don't so why would I bother to try and poop on their parade?

Both are following addictions but only one will:
    1) Makes you want to go outside
    2) Doesn't mandate you consume a lot of onions
    3) Protect you for local criminals
    4) Protect you for SHTF scenarios

No, we use paranoia (usually justified) and a fake sense of superiority, as a cover for our addiction to new guns. This consumption fills a void in our lives we feel is empty. We have no control over our politicians, government, or the degradation of society as a whole, but god damn it, we can always tell ourselves that our third Glock will come in handy when shit hits the fan. We tell ourselves that the only avenue we have to protect whats ours as Americans is another PSA build to go with our other six ARs. A gun obsession is usually nothing more than a final cry for a perceived control over your life. I try and look into some other popular hobbies and get a sense for them even if they're lame, just so I'm not stuck in a gun culture echo chamber. When someone doesn't admit to their obsession with the newest and shiniest gun, and just thinks of them as "tools" theyre lying to themselves. I own fourteen guns, two air rifles, and a Remington 1858 Reproduction. I collect them because they're fun to lay out and take pictures of, customize, and shoot. Its no different to the guy who collects Magic Cards and likes to show them off and I recognize that.

    I think so?
You're really limited with how many handguns you can own where I'm from, so I'm really selective.
Started out with an m9a3 (always had a hard-on for Berettas)
Took me 2 years before finding a revolver that was interesting enough for me to buy.
Next on the list is a pistol in .45 acp (hopefully px4 sd) and maybe one in .32 if I can find an interesting one.

They'll all be used in different disciplines/categories

You consume oxygen every breath you take. Are you a consumer? Unless you make it your sole purpose in life, then no. I don't, nor does buying shit count for me either. It's not the things you own, it's how richer your life is as a result that matters. And it helps if the things you buy have function other than collecting dust

Are you a consoomer if you buy lots of guns that you never shoot, with the intent to arm your frens who don't have guns? Are you a consoomer if you buy lots of guns as a store of wealth by buying rare or collectible and functional firearms, that will hold their value against inflation due to historical significance, rarity, or something of that sort? Of course not, because intent matters. But then there are consoomerist Black person types who buy gucci guns or impulse buy guns just as readily as they impulse buy Amazon shit.
Consoom is a mindset, not just what product it is. Buying guns for personal enjoyment becomes Consooming when it becomes excessive and for no reason other than endorphin release. If the justification for having 30 thousand rounds of ammo is preparedness against hordes of Black folk that live half a mile away, it's not consooming. But if the reality is that it's endorphin release and preparedness is just a shitty justification, then it's consooming.

Better compared to leddit, not better compared to where your priorities should be. The average male needs only 4 guns and almost nothing in the way of kit. Buying kit to play dress up is a female trait masquerading as masculinity. Most guys on this sub should be getting into shape instead of asking this board what belt garandthumb wore while cheating on his wife.

that said, roughly 2% of this board produce sufficiently interesting and innovative content to deserve a little leeway when buying gear. They are setting trends and finding quality gear for cheap. Those people are really the only ones who should post, while everyone else should just focus on doing pushups and hiking up mountains with heavy packs (this includes me).

    It depends on the individual
When I turned 21 I got a crappy Taurus G3 as my first gun and was in love with it. The gun itself was like $200 but I blew at least $300 on accessories and gear like mags, pistol cases, range apparel and the like, and that excludes cleaning tools, ammo and lube that were mandatory.
Nowadays though I take my $1,200 handgun to the range in an old box Amazon sent with my whatever product that was the right size and shoot in a wife beater and tattered jeans.

Is it consooming to accumulate enough parts to build about two dozen (I think) 80% ARs and Glocks just because I enjoy autistically tearing down and building guns but not really shooting them? I like putting them together in different configurations because frick it it's fun.
I guess I can say I've assembled more ARs and Glocks than most people out there but in the end I don't really "use" them past a building toy. I have gone shooting a few times but otherwise they stay in the basement. Sometimes I like to speedrun builds. Best AR time is 14m 38s, Glock 3m 12s.
I've thought about moving to AKs and CETMEs but I know that I'm wired in such a way that if I start buying any kind of tooling more than what I've got now I will legit end up with legit dozens of AKs and CETMEs I just don't have the room for that. At least ARs and Glocks I can easily take apart and reuse in a different build.

I wouldn't call someone who spent thousands of dollars on their car or garden a consumer and I don't think I would call someone who spent the same amount on Warhammer minis or movies a consumer either. Being a consoooooomer means you buy products at the whim of pop culture, you watched marvel because Twitter told you to, you liked DnD because your favorite twitch streamer plays it. If you spend tons of money on your personal hobby then you're a completely normal person who just happens to have a hobby.

What makes a consoomer is how worthless their collection ultimately is. When you die and your neighbors (or maybe even kids) are clearing out your place, are they just going to be hauling your collection away in garbage bags? Or are they going to be reselling, or even better, reusing it? Yea, even if you have 20+ AR15 clones in your safe, they still have a very distinct purpose. They still sell for a decent amount.
If a funko consoomer dies, people b***h as they throw it all out. If a gun collector dies, the local government shits themselves if the collection is given out.
