Are they the second strongest Western military?
    No
    >second strongest Navy in the West
    That's the UK
    >second largest economy in the West
That's probably Germany RN but it switches
    >exposed to more aggressive Asia Pacific theatre rather than coddled Europe
They have Island protection, Eastern Europe is stuck with Russia as their neighbor
    >can develop nukes in a jiffy
    True
    >have demonstrated ability to subjugate Asia and Russia
80 fricking years ago when their populations and economies were much smaller

According to Peter Zeihan, the most respected thinker on /k/, the RN has a less capable carrier force and projection ability than the JMSDF

    Zeihan on the JMSDF:

    >Japan doesn’t only build but also designs its own naval vessels and has since the 1880s. Japan’s navy is easily the second-most powerful expeditionary force in the world…the entire Japanese fleet is blue-water capable.

    >It is Japan, not China, that boasts the world’s second most capable navy. It is that navy that is second only to the United States in the number of aircraft carriers floated (Japan claims those carriers are only for helicopters but that is, if you’ll forgive the repeat, just some more PR bullshit).

    >Japan…has four aircraft carrier battle groups that can make it that far. The point is less that the Japanese would use carriers for convoy duty, and more that the Japanese could scrub Chinese naval power out of existence from Hormuz to Malacca with a minimum of fuss.

    Zeihan on the RN:
    >At each step the Queen Elizabeth carrier program had to re-justify itself and fight for funding anew. And now, with Brexit looming, they’re having to slim the rest of the naval force to keep their supercarrier program on track.

    >Which means the Brits no longer have sufficient ships to protect their new supers once they are fully operational.

    >The British Navy has atrophied so much for so long that it can no longer assemble two credible battlegroups and still defend Great Britain itself.

    >For the Queen Elizabeths’ deployments, this is nothing short of a Charlie Foxtrot. The new British supercarriers dare not venture further away from shore than the reach of British air power, whether that air power be launched from the United Kingdom itself or from the territory of a trusted ally. Support ships can certainly be built up more quickly (and cheaply) than the supercarriers themselves, but ships don’t grow on trees. This will be the state of the British Navy for at least a decade. Probably two.

    strongest Navy in the West
Not in the west. Yes, they're aligned with western nations but they're certainly not western. They did a good job of picking the things they like from western civilization and discarding the things they don't want. But yes, it's arguable that they are the second strongest navy.
    largest economy in the West
No. Germany has that crown now.
to more aggressive Asia Pacific theatre rather than coddled Europe
    Okay and?
    >>can develop nukes in a jiffy
True, but theoretical nukes don't mean a huge amount nowadays.
    >>have demonstrated ability to subjugate Asia and Russia
Yes, but those were different times.

What was the point of this thread, anyway?

Japan is absolutely part of the west. Not because they were westernized but because the west japonified. Western culture without Japan is unthinkable nowadays.

      >As a result, it is often cited as a primary example of a latent or threshold nuclear state, capable of developing weapons in a very short timespan should its government decide to do so.

Not even close. I liked training with the JGSDF when I was in the army because they're pretty cool dudes but most of their equipment is dated and their command structure is extremely top down so they were really slow to adapt during training. Their snipers were top notch though, made ours look like toddlers. But they had a lt colonel as squad leader of their snipers while we had a staff Sergeant.

Why do we still impose limitations on their armed forces? They've proven time and time again that they've completely westernized and are top tier bros, plus they despise our enemies and are in a very important location strategically. Wouldn't it be GOOD to have them have a huge ass navy and air force stationed there? Its not ww2 anymore

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the USA actually imposes any limitations on them. They're free to change their own constitution, but they won't do it when Big Brother America is already there to protect them.

The same reason as why Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines or Vietnam can't join the big boy leagues, Japanese are simply not made for modern warfare where quality > quantity, their entire approach is the same as China comprised of a gorillion low quality npcs in zergrushes which simply doesn't work anymore

The USA stopped "imposing" any sort of military regulations two years after the war. It's called "Reverse Course / 逆コース". Japan was supposed to be a bulwark against communist expansion so having Japan's military return to tip-top shape was a benefit and priority. However occupation officially ended in 1945, at which point the US was legally separated from dictating Japan's progress moving forward.
The problem is Japan got comfortable with having the US act as a bodyguard, meaning they could redirect funds that could have gone to their military towards economic growth.
Combined with peace and pacifist ideologies, a growing sense of "the military is an unnecessary expense" took root.
I often see the JSDF being called "tax thieves" or useless amongst a lot of the domestic populace. "We have the American military guarding us, why do we need to raise taxes or reallocate funds for the JSDF?"
The LDP party, most recently Abe and Kishida, have been trying to increase military spending in recent years and the US hasn't complained because it's what they've been wanting since the end of the war. In fact it's been admitted that the CIA covertly funded and supported the LDP for decades. The real problem is local push back against those reforms.

This isn't PrepHole so I won't get too far into detail, but there was a scrapped "Bride of Godzilla" movie treatment with almost that exact plot back in the 50's.
