I live in the SW mountains. We have herds of javelina and mule deer, and that brings coyotes, mountain lions and black bear. Everyone here keeps a shotgun by their front door, and I carry mine if I have to go outside my fence line after dark.

shotguns are cool because you don't need ammo to have fun with them. you can walk around your house pumping and dry firing and making doom sound effects with your mouth. i guess you can do it with other manual actions but it's not the same

There are so many now and specialized for various things I still use my 870 wingmaster with a 24 inch barrel and modified choke and the awesome wooden dowel to limit rounds or my HR 12 gauge single shot fixed full choke man best 100 bucks I ever spent on the HR it is a joy to carry and shoot and knowing you have one shot makes you better. My best advise is to go to your local Cabelas/Bass Pro/Sportsmans warehouse and take a look there are an utter shitwhack to chose from and all reputable brands

It really depends on what you are after, I'm partial to over/unders because I'm used to the swing (extra heft as there's the weight of the second barrel), but if you want to bag more birds in a flush, or prefer other actions then that's your choice.

Best advice is to go to a clay ground with a shop that'll let you try their guns before you purchase.

If it's all you got, but both inside and outside a house, the are a bottom-tier choice for defense. They're for hunting birds or brown bear protection with hardcast slugs. That's it.

Pretty much the answer I was looking for. All the posts itt say it's good for hunting, which I don't really plan to do, other than hunting shitskins when SHTF, in which case I guess it would be good as a backup to a rifle

Suppose you're in a justified home defense situation
In court do you want them to talk about how you shot one shell of 00 buck out of a wooden shotgun or 9 times with an MPX?
You can also hunt with them, shoot many types of loads, bird shot is relatively cheap compared to 5.56, so on.

yes, as the above poster has stated between 9 to 15 .32 caliber lead balls flying at around 1300 to 1500 fps could never realistically pose a threat to a home invader as humans actually have buckshot resistant skin, the more you know.

The bantz can't be contained. I'm not even that anon.

Shotguns are by far the most fun you can have for the money, both in the price of the gun and the price of the ammo. I promise that shooting cheap soda, pumpkins, and other trash with birdshot is way more fun than upgrading the backup sights for your backup AR. Remember that guns are at least partially a hobby and you'll have a great time.

Guns are nothing BUT a hobby for me. Sure, a hobby I can use to protect myself from upstanding urban youths, but I've never been in a situation where I've needed to.

12 gauge is so much more fun to shoot than 5.56 it is unreal. I barely even practice twice a year with my AR, but I'm getting out the shotgun at least twice a month because the first rule of gun safety is to have fun.

I mean, it's easier to hit someone when the size of your shot is roughly the size of a fist rather than the size of a tic tac. Rifles are better against multiple opponents, sure, but if it's just one or 2 guys I'd feel more comfortable with a shotgun

Ever been shot with .50 cal rat shot at point blank? Neither have I, but I’m pretty sure it’d make a fist sized hole. Want more range? Just load it up with no.4 buckshot instead. Cmon, at that point just use a rifle.

Shotguns are superior in situations where close range damage is more important, and overpenetration is not ideal, such as home defense.
I use a Benelli M4 as my bedside companion. 7+2 rounds of buckshot/slugs/whatever the frick else, and a 15-round shell belt in reserve are more than enough to paint my floors in intruder brains.
I respect my neighbors enough to not want to send 5.56 through their walls while gunning down Black folk shopping for a 5-finger discount.

Also, they are more fun than rifles, just as a general rule. Tell me you don't enjoy blowing a target into confetti with a barrage of shells at 5 yards, and I will know you aren't someone I can trust.

No, they are not good assault weapons for storming hills and shit in warfare. But that's okay because it's not their purpose. If you're dead set on using a rifle for home defense then do it. shotguns are absolutely still useful, they're a fricking wall of small balls of lead going faster than sound. they're best used when percise aim is either hard or dangerous (no time to do so) and they're very good when used on crowds and in confined spaces
