Are semi-custom 1911 shops like Nighthawk, Les Baer, Ed Brown, etc... just full of shit? How are there so many $3k lemons out there from them?

Is Les Baer any good? Been considering a 9mm long slide from them
Nighthawk has always been shit. Wilson is still the best for semi-custom. Les Baer is alright but they are very, very tight guns (one of their selling points along with beign all barstock parts) and that can mean they are more finicky- but I had one with a 1.5" at 50yards and aside from the extremely tight lockup it was a nice shooter. Ed Brown used to be good but I dunno now that the reigns have been passed on.
Outside of a couple very good full custom smiths I just don't see the same quality anymore. With the boom in high-end 1911s being the 80-90s, all those employees are retiring and the younger replacements just don't seem to be up to it.
buy a Springfield or Olt
boomers think you want 0.001 tolerances, but that makes firearms super finicky and need perfect lubrication to operate.
>when you don't know the difference between clearances and tolerances
what's the difference friendo?
Clearances are the gaps between parts. AKs have large clearances. Tolerances are the acceptable amount of deviation in the production a part during the manufacturing process. Basically quality control. Tighter tolerances are always better.
USGI 1911s were built to extremely tight tolerances but had relatively loose clearances
seems large clearances would leave room for looser tolerances
It might. But there are other parts to consider and bad quality control adds up.
People don't buy these things to actually shoot. It's for the flex. Like how a $4000 automatic watch is less accurate and durable than a $10 quartz watch but if you say you have a quartz watch you get accused of poor taste.
I've owned several. When they work, they're fun as shit. I couldn't get much past 200 rounds with any of them before FTF/E issues started. Most USPSA matches were under that round count, so it kind of worked. I eventually switched to CZ and sold off the high-end 1911's to salivating boomers.
Does anyone make high quality USGI 1911s? So far it seems like you're either dealing with $500 cast metal MIM GI clones or if you want forged and milled it's gonna be a $3500 safe queen that barely shoots.
CMP opened round four for 1911's Sept 1 till the end of the month. they start at $1150.
>I paid $3000 I demand $20000 quality!
a 3k pistol is six times the functional tool price, so yeah, I expect it to be both beautiful and functional at that price. if it can't get through a few magazines without a malf, it's garbage.
You people don't know SHIT about the time it takes to get to the level you want
These are mass produced slop anyway, and they don't even manage $3000 quality, much less what you all expect
If I'm paying 3 fucking grand for a 1911 I want that shit to function better and have a better fit and finish than a glock. If it doesn't have that whatsoever, then I have the right to firebomb whoever built it for me.
How many $1k KAC QD mounts or $2k quad rails do you own? Consoomers like you are the reason the firearm market has been fucked the past several years.
A custom 1911 can be great but most of them exist to fleece money out of boomers.
yes
because there is a sucker born every minute
Don't waste your money on these.
