Surely there's no benefit to decreasing the potential stock of artillery shells North Korea has.

I would trust the recent North Korean shells over old stock Soviet shells. It's sad, but North Korea has objectively eclipsed Russia's military industrial complex. There are more M2020 tanks than there will ever be Armatas.

Yeah but why would they send them to Africa first instead of just sending them to Vladivostok 50 miles away where they can get moved by rail directly to the battle zone?

Plausible deniability, basically all North Korean exports have to be laundered against sanctions.

Yes, because Russia is so worried about US sanctions. Pretty sure we will figure out where the North Korean shells in Ukraine came from no matter how they got there. Same goes for the rockets as well, the fact that they will occasionally actually hit their targets will be a dead giveaway.

The rail lines leading to-and-from the far east are shit and unmaintained, and so are the trains themselves now that sanctions are eating into that too. Moreover, they were never designed nor intended for mass transport of railcars full of artillery shells. The heaviest things we've seen Russians transport from the far east is a sparse echelon of stripped Siberian BUK units. Laundering the shells by boat is probably logistically more feasible than rail. Which is hilarious.

And that's why Russia lost the war against Japan.

Additional hilarity: North Korea can't use their own trains to move them through Russia because unlike North Korea Russia doesn't have an electrified rail system. So most NK trains will not work because the Russian rail system is too primitive to handle North Korean engines.

It has Leopard 1 style western suspension though, allegedly from Romania(???)

No one knows, it doesn't seem to be based on a elongated T-62 chassis so the design came from somewhere else. They are notorious for getting examples of technology and only taking weirdly specific things like when they took apart a T-72 and junked everything (including autoloader) besides the gun in favor of T-62 based designs.

Why are they painted like they're expecting to have a big tank showdown with the U.S. in the deserts of the Middle East?

To sell to people like Iran.

They are realistically a mafia state more than a communist country at this point. I am not surprised at all.

According to their constitution Kim Il Sung is the Eternal President and Jong Il is Eternal Chairman of the party giving them two official heads of state who are deceased.

You are now aware of the phrase 'Hereditary Necroarchy' and that it is a real world form of government.

You can tell from the size of the turret ring that it is (can't beleive i'm typing this) a FOURTH generation T-62 based development.

        T-62>Chonma ho>Pokpung-ho>M2020.

Note that the last two are so far gone from a T-62 that there is nothing left besides the transmission and a few basic hull elements, it is for all intents a new design.

The North needs to get them to Vladivostok which they can easily do by boat, after that it isn't their problem.

        >logistically more feasible than rail
Maybe Russia should buy some skilled labor, new tracks and maybe some trains from North Korea. Which is even more hilarious.

They are better than Russian. Same as their AKs. Why? Norks use artillery as a major part of their non-WMD deterrence tactics. Hence they have millions of pieces and shells. Pretty sure there was a documentary of arms sales in Somalia and Nork AKs were like 50% more expensive than brand new Russian Aks.

Might have just been using up old stocks. It seems silly if they're that poor when they can produce stuff decently.
