No. Concealed firing positions will never be dead

Do you not remember the portable ones Russia moved in near the start? There were even a few good vids of them being hit.

          No, I haven't see them.

Read up on the defense of Kyiv on the right (western) side of the river. WW2-era pillboxes were actually central to the (completely successful) Ukrainian defense strategy.

          Interesting.

there are frickload of them, I saw some vids of new, heavy bunkers, with thick steel doors and everything, including armoured cupolas for observation. Ukrainians just don't brag about them and soldiers are forbidden from posting about them, for a good reason.

Also, there's a good reason in recent offensive Russians ware dropping frickload of 500kg bombs.
Couldn't crack them bunkers with anything else.

          >and soldiers are forbidden from posting about them
Makes sense. With how the digital age is, I actually expected secrets, beyond encrypted messages, to be dead.

All those Russians you see getting machine gunned when they hop off their transports, those are usually done by concealed firing positions.

Most concealed firing positions are just foxholes or slit trenches at best
But more likely to be a just a convenient rock, ledge, or window sill

Dedicated defensive structures have a terrible return on investment

With Ukraine being all trenches and artillery a la WWI, I expected pillboxes to show their faces eventually.

Ukraine has mostly been fought over open terrain, not in trenches

Wasn't that how WWI was in the beginning?

And how do you think open terrain is held?

It's not. It's almost entirely being fought from foxholes and trenches, often concealed within thickets of trees between fields, or in urban environments. The only way you could be even remotely right is if by "over open terrain" you mean literally fighting above ground which would be even dumber of a statement.

There will always be a need for strategic railheads, ammunition depots, bridge checkpoints, etc. If your dudes are stationed there, then it's more efficient to send in a construction battalion to make them designed defensive points.

They made fun of it, but would you rather have to dig your own hole and only have earthworks and sandbags on the fly when you can just drop a shitty pre-cast concrete structure that can hold up to rifle fire? In rearline duty, I know what my choice would be. But that's why we also have hescos.

In white warfare where you can delete them with PGMs, yes. In shitskin warfare with Black folk beheading each other with machetes, no.

Should Ukraine have made a Maginot line between 2014-2022?
