Its not a meme considering the Chinese have been training their own in the past 30 years.

NCOs are a bilateral structure that while technically are out ranked by officers, they carry out orders given to them
A Platoon sergeant is given orders from the PL and or Commander and does everything in his power to execute them, and so forth
The commander does most planning and administrative stuff while he assists and or keeps the troops in line and carries out objectives
If a commander is killed off NCOs still can keep the unit held together and even finish the mission.

With a weak NCO structure you wouldn't be able to get this done.

    >are they a meme position??

Because you talk like this I automatically assume you're speaking with disingenuity and you're an underage homosexual and aren't going to really care about whatever response you get

This. It's probably a slide thread.

Without them your army becomes top heavy, like the droids in Phantom Menace. Without a general radioing them exactly when and where they can piss at all times, they just shut down.
See: Russians in Ukraine just standing around not doing anything once they stop getting orders on the radio.

Russians park unmanned equipment out in the open so it gets destroyed and they don’t have to fight. They at least have effective E4s.

And how's that been going for them?

Yeah and the Russians and Chinese fricking suck at war. Having to have officers screaming at random grunts to actually get anything done is really fricking stupid.

NCOs are just the regular welfare bunnies that decided to make it to 20 years. Kind of like that old tradesman that is fluent in his job who acts as a superior to the newbies.

Qelfare jokes aside, this is the age old problem of what someone who has progressed beyond journeyman status should do.

Corporate America is still stuck in a line of thinking that once you have acquired enough experience and skill, you become a manager, tell other less skilled people what to do, and rarely ever again do the job you spent so much time learning. It's bonkers, and it breaks down the second you have two people that both are skilled and experienced, because there's only one management position.

Enter the NCO. You still like doing infantry shit after a few years? Well good news, now you are responsible for training, implementation of the officers' plans, and also still get to do all your infantry shit, just while having to multitask and maintain mental checklists.

In my personal experience working in the corporate world with vets, guys who were platoon seargents coming into the company either become these amazing lynchpins of your department with stupidly high people skills, or they are the biggest sandbagging sons of b***hes who will inevitably get fired after cornering and sexually harrasing some 20-year-old in the breakroom after hours.

China aside (probably not a real military which is there for corruption and parades) the Russians DO have a NCO system. We just don’t see the benefits because their army is made up of very low-quality human materiel (minorities ie Tartars, Asiatics, Chechens, etc). NCOs to them is probably the guy who can steal the most / knows the best ways of ignoring his duties.

Russians don't have an NCO system, perhaps in theory

Russia's military has a tendency to squash or kill anyone that gets too popular among the troops, so NCO positions don't really get filled properly.

I like how you group the minorities in as the bad fighters when it is the opposite.

Barely, Russia doesn't have any Staff NCOs at all

The Chinese have them, they started their program in the 90s and it's now estimated that their armed forces are in part, composed of 850K NCOs.

On the off chance that this isn't bait, the sheer moronation it takes to even ask this question is staggering. They're not just useful, they're absolutely vital, to the degree that you can't do jack shit without them.

    >Are NCOs a meme position or are they actually useful for an army? The Russians and Chinese don't seem to have them.

NCOs are a feature from the feudal era that lasted trough the gilded age. Basically the officers of that time were upper class fops who bought their commissions, and didnt really know shit about the nuts and bolts of warfare, so they needed an auxillary class of professional officer that did the groundwork while the fop told them what the formation was supposed to do. NCOs are a sort of human abstraction layer between the officer and his troops.

Officers handle top secret opords, planning, coordination, administration stuff,

NCOs have years and years of experience that handle leading the troops in battle, which the officers rely on since he is knowledgeable of his craft

The officer dictates and the NCO influences

Hot take: No. They are a legacy of 19th century classism that makes no sense when the average person has 12+ years of education. The distinction between the professional officer and the experienced NCO is stupid and the proliferation of specialists proves it.

A new rank structure is needed where there is more or less a uniform progression from Private to General that recognizes the multitude of high skilled specializations needed for modern operations. Particularly in the Navy, the Navy is the one that grinds the most because you've got ensigns in the deck department who are technically superior to warrant officers with 15 years of experience. In practice of course the buffer is in charge of the boat and the midshipmen do as their told, so why the frick do we pretend like officers and warrant officers are two different things?

Picture you're working at a job and you manage a team of 4 people.

Things are going ok, but you get criticized and even written up if you do things without authorization from your boss.

Now your boss goes on vacation. What happens to your project? It might slow down because you have issues that (through punishment) the management demands they micromanage. But they're on vacation.

    Hope this little analogy helps.

One of the hallmarks of a good business is managers who train people to do their jobs properly and without micromanagement, One of the hallmarks of a bad business is managers who run around "fighting fires" because they're created a system that can't function without their direct input. It's no different for armies.

America's NCO corps is the standard that all nations should follow. All other nations without a strong NCO corps are gay and moronic and I hate them.
    >t. NCO

The officers give orders, the NCOs give them to the people in the field, they make sure that everything is running smoothly. Imagine a factory, the people working at corporate are the officers, the managers are the NCOs and the workers are the privates/other ranks, every part needs the other to work. It's usually the NCOs that know the most as well.

NCOs aren't a meme position, Russia doesn't have them because they have a meme military.
