Are grenadiers allowed to fire at will in combat or do they get told by their squad leader when and at what to shoot at?

If you use your names at your discretion and it turns out good then you didn't need permission, if it turns out had them you did need permission.

You played America's Army hu? In the Muhreenes I was never told when to fire it. I could at will. However you better have a grenade when your squad leader asks you to shoot something with it

Why would you use noob tube and not just spawn as squad leader class yourself?
You really like having someone tell you what to do, yell at you if you somehow "disappoint" them, and deal with that eunuch bullshit, in a warzone of all places?
Squad leader can easily tell you "hey I need someone to run out there and die so we can eat chow and watch" and then shoot you for "disobeying orders" or some other shit if you refuse to go on their suicide mission

You sound like a terrible leader. A real leader is in the shit with their men. That's how you earn loyalty and respect from your men.

          >A real leader is in the shit with their men.

no a real leader is where he is needed most. in the modern era that usually means next to signal comms to coordinate ops between upper and lower echelons, lower echelons being who you delegate to. that's why SNCOs are really important and paid as much as they are. if you're an officer trying to push shit along at the front in 2023, that means you're in the russian army and you're about to get HIMARed.

In the Marines, TLs are the ones issued grenade launchers aren't they?

Well if you do it on your own and you paste some toddlers in the room next to the haji it's your ass... so I dunno if you'd want to.

If it's an asymmetric night raid and we're harassing and closing from the perimeter, I'd give them permission to unload dozens of grenades on confirmed enemy fortified positions, but not on civilians or civilian occupied areas. The enemy signs up to risk their lives, that's honorable, which is the basis of war crime law. It's rooted in Protestant values, much like the United Nations and the very concept of international law.

How effective are the 40mm grenades? Anyone here used them or witnessed them in combat? Did they have a big impact, or was it more like a shock & awe thing?

Could easily take out 9 people in Squad

In Afghanistan they were very good for going through cover. Walls around fields and rural buildings were very thick mud adobe style construction. Thick enough to even stop 7.62 from the 240s. Although the HEAT in the 40mm isn’t ideal it’s good enough to frick up those mud walls. A better option were M72s but we didn’t always have those on hand (and we were very sad when they stopped issuing more to us). 40mm HEDP did indeed kill some dudes I have seen up close and I know since I had to do BDA.

When I was in, 40mm dudes were expected to primarily use their 40mm in any situation where it made sense. Especially in counter ambush. Sometimes they’d be directed to a specific target, but they’d adjust fire rather than begin to fire.

No idea but in the Army most M203s went to a dedicated gunner in infantry units. I know some units experimented by giving them to TLs as a way of directing fire but it’s not an armywide thing.

Finally a launcher thread. Just took this thing out for the first time this week. Hunting down the stuff to make ammo for it is quite a pain in the ass though.

gotta fiddle with the chalk rounds so they don't separate mid-flight anymore.

So we had this grenadeir named Spc. Harris.
He was a fatass, and a little weird.
You just NEVER knew what he might say, but it was going to be wildly inappropriate.
    >Be me, onnapatrol one night.
    >we keep hearing radio chatter from the Taliban.
    >They're planning an ambush.
    >Based on chatter Cpl. Jackson figures they are in a set of bushes next to a farm house.
    >Decides on recon by fire, and tells Harris to shoot next to the bushes.
    >Harris decides that "My time is now!" and sends an HEDP straight into the bushes.
    >KA-BOOM!
    >All radio chatter ceases.
    >Intel informs us the next day that a Taliban officer and two soldiers were killed the previous night and to be aware that their may be activity after the funerals.
    >So, no write up for Harris, because he was retroactively doing as he was told.
    Your tax dollars at work.

Do any other 40mm types besides HEDP ever get any use? Videogames convinced me smoke ones are omnipresent

HEDP most common by wide margin. Then smoke, then illumination. Illuminations only got used when at night with ANA with us who didn’t have NODs.

Those are the three types I’ve actually ever seen carried in combat. Add in chalk grenades for training. I’ve seen some other de-milled rounds in person, but only as training pieces.

Adding for the GP launchers having been on the other end and digging up caches that saw VOG-25 and VOG-25Ps in about equal number.
