They dont. Asbestos isn't as bad as media in the 70s painted it, and you dont breath it in in those filters

There are several types of asbestos. The "doesn't-give-you-cancer" type(not any more than your typical dust or smth) just so happened to be mostly sourced from the SU

So the Type they used in their masks is not dangerous to the user

NTA but I wouldnt trust it, I would expect nothing more from the soviets to use whatever asbestos the US used without care, especially before anyone knew that asbestos was dangerous.

Yes. It's just like fabric, because the soviet asbestos is in very long fibers, just like wool for example.

I don't really understand your post, but again there are two main types of asbestos. The stuff mined in the US (amphiboles) was in tiny little fibers. Any small particles will be carcinogenic if you breathe in enough of them, even flour or pure silicon(despite it being chemically as inert as it can usually get). Soviet asbestos was safer due to being in much longer fibers. And soviets aren't russians, they weren't incompetent.

Wrong. Some are worse than others but they're all bad if free floating.

There are no safe asbestos. Stop believing in this meme.

Better than nothing at best, harmful at worst. The material isn't going to get better over time and the surplus masks are often decades old. But of course you can wear it in an apocalyptic rave or for kinky stuff in your private bunker.

The surplus ones that have not changed its filters to a modern one contains asbestos.

As others have stated, the 40mm GOST and several other soviet gas mask filters contain a layer of asbestos. Unless the filter is damaged the risk isnt that high but still, I wouldnt even fuck with it. GP5 is a good mask for the price. It will seal even if you have facial hair which is a plus. Go to gas mask general and find one for $15-$20 and try it out, get a 40mm GOST to a 40mm NATO mask adapter.

From what I understand Russia and Poland made replacement filters for the masks that do not contain asbestos and are actually pretty affordable and cheap to find in the us also , they fit pretty much all the Soviet ones , Polish , eg , Hungarian , russian , hell they probably fit the Chinese masks to seeing as they adopted copies of the russian masks

The polish ones people say work in both are technically 2 different filters made to the two seperate specifications. However on all but two of the dozens of gost masks I own I can get a full seal on nato filters. And one of those is a shit chinese mask that may not even be to gost spec.

If it's all you can get (inexplicably) and you actually need it, sure. The possibility of death in 40 years from Mesothelioma is better than guaranteed death from chemical agents.

I planned on using a replacement filter if I ever did need it I’m just curious on if it’s a good budget option

There is no other reason to use old Soviet surplus masks in a life or death situation, than you have literally nothing else. Otherwise buy something newer and if plauseable, new and unused with new sealed filters. Carrying an old inner tyre of a bicycle when you can buy CAT is insanity. Rubber gets old and filters will not survive 10's of years.
